I played the first Section 8 PC title. It was a great game, but the developers didn't really push the PC version on the marketing side.

Seeing this game sell for $15 or less is a good move to bring more people into the series.

I agree with the video that this game isn't the standard kill, kill, kill-streak, kill, die game. It is more dynamic/complex and involving.

Yes GFWL is fail. But I have found that games like Dirt 2 aren't that bad of a GFWL title when purchased and accessed through steam.

It looks like a good game. The real question is how well it will perform on PCs. Even the best console game ported is worthless if it is bugged and unstable on pc.

Given the current trend of bugged game releases, I have given up on pre-ordering any games until I can be sure its even playable after release.

The first game didn't give me a console port feel. Prejudice is basically the rebirth of the first title. This time it's cheaper. Hopefully they will gain a larger following because of that.

But I'm 100% with you on trying before buying.

I had the luxury of playing the beta.

Beta played like silk on my rig, even with .ini tweaks for better then max settings.

I'd like to know what "silk" could mean. Are you saying smoothly?

I'd like to know what your system specs are if you got into the PC beta.

My specs are:

i7 2.6 ghz oced to 3.4
1744 mhz 6 gb ram
GTX 580
Patriot SSD

I could have gone SLI, but SLI scaling these days is just not good enough so I left it out of case.

Running the beta at 1920x1080 at 5/5 ingame settings with 0x AA or AF gave me 60-70+ fps in big 32 player/bot fights.

Silky smooth is about right, unless you classify 80+ fps as silk.

Then again, the graphics and textures aren't as good as UT3 at times... UT3 still works as a good game to get your estimates. Basically any onslaught maps like Torlan for stock installs. Any UT3 game at 120 fps is silky smooth, and I don't use vsync, ever.

actaully vsync is the only way to be as silky smooth as can be, it's impossible otherwise

now if you have a 120hz monitor, that would be a problem as a lot of modern games cant really keep up, at least with single cards

It's true that image quality, or rather, lack of screen tearing would classify as silky smooth.

I'll change my statement a little.

Any game that plays at 90+ fps with vsync off is what I consider silky smooth and fully responsive. I am more than willing to sacrifice image quality for maximum fluidity, response and prevention of fps drops. The exception to this is only if screen tearing is horrific, terrible, and totally ruins my ability to aim and shoot.

I use vsync on everything and don't really have any issue with it :/

Id rather not use it because back in the crt days I preferred 90 over 60. But for my LCD 60 is fine. Maybe because I'm now used to it :P

well ya on a crt, if your refresh was something higher than 60, which it usually is cuz 60 on a crt is flickering too blatantly, then 90 would be quite nice (well 85 vsync if your refresh was at 85)

what complicates things with lcds is that our eyes cause motion blur when looking at steady light, so the lowest response time in the world cant fix that, the backlight has to flicker to compensate

you can compare old & led holiday lights to see this, slide your eyes around & the old style lights will blur, while the leds will seem sharper & you'll notice the slight flicker

It always annoys me on forums how many threads go Off topic towards a hardware discussion.

ok so http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-section-8-prejudice/17-4040/ back on topic

turning into hardware talk has a high chance to happen on pc, cuz a game will seem fun, but someone out there will have a weak system & need to ask how it will run

I think that any pc semi-decent from the last three generations could run this game buttersmooth at some setting or another. The U3 Engine is nice, but hardly cutting edge.

Anyway:

How big are the maps in this game, Are they (s8's 32 player maps) comparable to BF2's maps on the 32 player setting?

i played the beta and thought it was great! the only reason i'm not set on buying it right now is that it comes out 6 days before brink. prejudice was a first day buy for me out of a thank you for what the devs are doing: a fully stuffed game for $15 with exceptional quality...but then they put the release date after xbox and the ps3 release date to sometime in summer. hopefully it's just to make sure the other systems get optimization, but it just seems that xbox is their priority and we are on the back burner. so, that's the only thing stopping me from buying the game, not the quality of the game.

This game is running on GFWL, which is owned by the same company that owns XBox. Putting it on the XBox console first ensures anyone who really wants it and owns multiple platforms will likely buy it on Xbox first, giving MS the biggest cut of all the people buying the game.

It's not the developer's fault.

Anyway:

How big are the maps in this game, Are they (s8's 32 player maps) comparable to BF2's maps on the 32 player setting? No. For one the speed in Section 8 is much greater than in BF2. So the time to travel the same distance it cut by greater than half. So the same area wont feel as big.

Still, BF2 had bigger areas and much more structures.

The game still has more area than COD and most other games.
