You can take a look at the demo(steam://install/33920), but please keep in mind:
this demo build is extremely outdated compared to released game updates ...

Imo no, the only thing arma 2 really does right is the mission editor and multiplayer but most of the established clans and groups that play arma have moved on to arrowhead, and the multiplayer isn't really something where you can jump onto a server.
The singleplayer is atrociously bad on account of terrible friendly ai, forgettable story, bland characters, and horrible voice acting. It's not even worth playing.
You need to set yourself up with a clan on scheduled missions. That's where arma shines but like I said they mostly play arrowhead now with occasionally coming back to the base game for nostalgia.
My advice would be to be to either get it with arrowhead since or just arrowhead. Though Arrowhead is quite a bit more but the price point and what that is worth is up to you. To me the only thing that is worth playing in the Arma series is multiplayer and co-op. And there aren't too many scheduled events anymore for the base game.

It's still good if you like simulations and if you can live with reloading missions a few times because of bugs.
Stay far away if your only experience with shooters is the Call of Duty or Battlefield variety.
More like original Rainbow 6 or Ghost Recon? You know, before they got turned into mindless shooters. From what I've read it sounds like theres a bit of prep for missions and such which is what I know Rainbow 6 had. Original Recon had some of that but not as extensive as R6.

They are much closer (and I loved them too! Rainbow 6 up to Raven Shield, then they became arcade ♥♥♥♥), but the experience is still quite different. The closest older game is probably Operation Flashpoint, I think it was also designed by some of the same people.

Arma 2 is really just Operation Flashpoint updated, by almost exactly the same people.

I regret wasting my money on it. Single player is totally unplayable and boring (2 hours in and I'd seen exactly 1 enemy). You'll waste unceasing hours waiting for your squad to decide that they want to actually move up. The game runs terribly despite mediocre graphics (and requires tweaking before you can see anything at all to begin with). The controls are amazingly unresponsive and unintuitive.
I loved Operation Flashpoint, but this game is just a waste of time. If you want wide open scenery in an FPS, go for Crysis or Far Cry 2 instead, which are far superior.
See post in link below.
You like kiddy games like CoD, CS, Far Cry and such then Arma 2 is not for you.

Mediocre graphics? Are you blind?
And most people only see one enemy because they suck. The enemies see you just fine.
The first half of the SP campaign doesn't have very many big engagement because it babies you.

This game isn't like anyother if you have a crappy system its not for you. no other game come close, Operation Flashpoint Dragon rising was CRAP! HomeFront a waste of money and time, should have learnt my lesson with Frontlines fuel of CRAP!.
BLACK OPS PFFFTTT 1 million kids running arround button mashing and trash talking isn't my cup of tea.
I play with active military in arma2 nothing compares to it.
Arma2 has no equal, button mashing in this game wont help you, theres allot to it, I belong to a regiment were this game is used to its fullest potencial. Any one that talks crap about Arma2 has no sway with me. I have played over 1800 HRS and no other game comes close, bf2 yes bf3 yes anyother game is a 2 cent knock off.
Real Tactical players play Arma2.

I've enjoyed the game for the most part.
SP is a slow burner but once you get in to MP, it's quite fun.
A lot of servers run Ventrilo or Teamspeak which is pretty much needed so make sure you have a headset.
The graphics look good but I would say you would do better to be closer to the recommended system specs rather than the minimum.
It is a lot heavier than something like BC2 or OFP though, lots of buttons so do the training missions a few times.
It's a good price so go get it.

SP is a slow burner.
That's true in general but it really depends.
Go plonk yourself down in the editor and have a hundred infantry and gunships come and try to flatten the village you're cowering in. Then tell me it's a slow-paced game.
