I assume others have posted somewhere here about this, but... has anyone found a solution to this OTHER than turning down graphics settings? I've got a more than powerful enough computer.
Problem: Characters, Rocks, and objects (like treasure chests) flicker invisble/visible like crazy.
I've tried with both Quality Rendering enabled and disabled. though I'd prefer to have antialiasing, neither work. What's the solution, disable some effects? why should we have to reduce quality to play... this game used to run just fine before this big patch.
and BTW, I tried that latest beta patch in this forum by Poet and it didn't solve anything.

I dont know if this will help you but when I had problems
running the game at the lowest resolution in the Config tool
800x600, 4:3, 60hz -- windowed mode
often helped me

thanks for the reply, but that's not a real solution. I'd like to play the game the way it was meant to be played, like it was working before this big patch. (maxed settings and fullscreen)

When you have really invisible Characters, For example the first knights, then config has to be closed and restart grotesque tactics. Sometimes activate Hardware Cursor was another help.
With the last beta patch he does this automatically and those problems are history.
When you say the characters flicker ,so they go visible and invisible maybe you have changed the visibility option of objects?
Maybe you try first to erase your custom configuration.
Close Grotesque Tactics
copy the beta patch
erase the config.xml :
C:\Users\Username\Documents\Grotesque-Tactics\Settings\Config.xml
and then start first with the default configuration to see if this works
Do have you flickering characters then?
Do you have the latest offical graphic drivers and directx installed?

I erased config.xml and used the default config and instead I get DARK/BLACK characters/objects/foliage, and SOME flickering but not as bad as before. no change when enabling hardware cursor, stencil shadows, coronas, or depth of field. completely unplayable like this.
now, I disable quality render... same thing. move visible range sliders more, and LESS flickering but still BLACK stuff.
here's a screenshot of dark/black stuff all over. it looks like shadows aren't working properly. http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/7492/grotesquetactics2011042.png
NOW... I enable antialiasing, DARK/BLACK stuff goes away, but characters/objects flicker like crazy. (the original issue before erasing config.xml) this is hard to capture in a screenshot
and NOW again... I try disabling character shadows. now no animations. camera doesn't move, everyone has their arms out wide. I alt tab, then come back and entire screen is black except for user interface. BROKEN. (same thing with both character shadows and stencil shadows disabled)
and now finally, I try disable fullscreen/verticle sync. window mode 1680x1050. FLICKER FLICKER FLICKER and stutering animations. I give up...
and the config tool loads REALLY SLOW. music plays for a long time, then it finally appears.
latest directx
latest .net
newest beta patch
new game (not old save)
<rant> I pay money to have fun and play a game, but instead I spend hours troubleshooting. would not have bought if I knew how "fun" this would be... I guess this is what we should expect from gothic 1-3 senior programmer. needed tons of community patches to fix bugs... </end rant>

You have a high end expensive system and your complaining about a cheap game having graphical issues? come on now.
All games have issues at one point or another, Thats part of being a gamer.
Do you have any forced settings on the nVidia Control Panel?
Some games dont like forced settings so perhaps thats the issue, just a possibility.

The game installation is broken. Its not the CPU and not the game. That must be a steam configuration problem. We now how to solved the problem. YOu have to erase an old file: grotesquetactics.vscene
You must have this file, because of those bugs.
Is it realy a clean directory?
and you also can try this:
If anyone else is make sure to "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" in Steam under the games Properties. It cleared those right up for me.
(Right click name of game in Steam Library > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache)

I'm having the same problem with flickering character models. I had to play process of elimination to find out what was causing it, and it seems to be character shadows. Everything is fine when I turn them off. Might wanna look into that. I do like my shadows.
EDIT: Well, the more I look at it the more it looks like the character models are tearing. They twitch around in random animations.

This isn't the case, I've reinstalled the game several times. The only way I can get it to run half as good as it used to before the patch, is to delete "My Documents\Grotesque Tactics" folder before I start the game EVERY TIME. Otherwise I get bad flickering and artifacts, etc etc.. but this erases my save files. and like I said, it only works "half" because it still gets some flickering and disappearing objects.
You have a high end expensive system and your complaining about a cheap game having graphical issues? come on now.
So you're saying I should be fine with owning a broken game I can't play because it's "cheap"? and I don't know what your definition of cheap is, but $20 is not cheap to me. regardless of whether it costs $1 or $50, it's a game I paid for that simply does NOT work. also, my "expensive system" is irrelevant to the value of a broken game, so please keep your jeallousy out of this. a broken game is a broken game. people buy expensive hardware to AVOID running into graphical problems or slowdowns.
All games have issues at one point or another, Thats part of being a gamer.
Oh really? I didn't realize broken/unplayable games out of the box were part of being a gamer. I'm sorry if I buy a game and expect it to work. That must be my mistake right? I should just lower my expectations? ...also, the game used to work fine until they forced this garbage "epic" update on us.

Nope, tried every which way... doesn't make a difference.

Did you try turning off character shadows like I did? Small price to pay to get rid of flickering. Worked for me, at least.

Interesting. I have the same problem. I have a lot of Steam games but I bought Grotesque via another vendor (Impulse) so it is not Steam specific.
* Edit 21/11/2011
I fixed the graphical glitches by turning off the 'Quality Renderer' option in the setup screen before the game launches.
