View Full Version : Do you finish games till 100%?

Hey all, I'm just curious how many people finish games at 100% completion and the reason why. There are plenty of games, namely RPG games, where they have a percentage meter where it shows your progress and completion of the games, including many challenges, puzzles, items, etc. There are also a lot of other games where you can 100% complete it without the need of the percentage meter to tell you, like Dead Space I suppose, why you can collect and upgrade everything and that is considered as 100% completion due to the list of items you can find (not to sure if there is a percentage meter in that game).

Back in the old days of gaming it was RPG games where people normally go for 100% completion and to complete some of the RPG games are dead hard, some of games require mass amount of game knowledge or the use of walkthroughs... to complete the game 100%. Some of the things you have to do is mind blowing, like how in the world would anyone know that you had to put A to B through G with the use of F and Y without touching H and K then talk to the old man in town and you can't mess up or else it's gone forever.

Now even multiplayer games you can go for 100% completions. Games such as Killing Floor where you level up your class to level 6 (max), Monday Night Combat where you unlock tags and Call of Duty where there are weapons, challenges, prestige to level 10/15 and many other multiplayer games. With the addition of achievements, it brings more replay value and more objectives/challenges to try and complete the games fully. Even though these aren't as 'hard' and weird as RPG's requirement for completion, they sure take a lot of time and sometimes even luck to do. But since some people cheat to get there, it just doesn't seem like an achievement anymore for me.

I, for one, when it comes to games and completing it, varies from game to game. If I am a fan of the game series, I will try and complete it 100%. For example, at the moment me and a friend are trying to finish every Kingdom Hearts game to date 100%, even the Final Mix versions (Japanese only versions that include bonus content and we don't know how to read and speak Japanese) and a lot of missions and challenges are stressful and hard. Yet we feel the need to finish the game 100%. Reason? I don't actually have a solid answer, self satisfaction? Knowing that I have done it? The fact that the game itself is worth my time to complete 100%?

Then there are other (action) games where in general I just look at every corner (force of habit) and if I miss something then it doesn't bother me and I just carry on to finishing the storyline. Then there are games where it requires a bit of work to complete like Arkham Asylum but not too hard and fun so I do them. Achievements can be a real pain, I check the achievements to see how long it will take for me to do them, if it takes to long, I don't bother, namely most multiplayer games, but because of that I don't feel like I 100% completed it the game. Then there are games where there are different sides (good/evil), endings and non-linear and large pathways that put me off from completing it 100% or even at all (Fallout, GTAIV, Just Cause 2).

TL;DR
So my question to you is:
What do you consider to be 100% completed?
Do you finish games till 100%?
What games have you completed 100% on?

I finish a game by completing the story line and doing original side missions.

If it's something utterly stupid like collecting flags in Assassin's Creed, it's not worth my time.

Depends on how fun the game is. I generally only finish the main mission/quest/storyline since most of the time side missions are the same boring nonsense that doesn't seem to add to and/or progress the storyline at all. I also cannot be bothered finding all the <insert hidden locations/boxes/items etc.> in a game, well except for all the Playboy magazines in Mafia II but they were worth it.

Super Mario 64 and Donkey Kong Country are the only two games I can remember getting 100% completion on (I've been close with a few others like Yoshi's Island, Ocarina of Time, and Goldeneye). I really don't consider it worth it anymore as an adult with more money to buy games than available free time to spend playing them.

The first time I play a game, I try and go through it with minimal help/walkthrough and only resort to it if I get stuck. So...I don't mind missing stuff on my way to the ending.

If I play through again, I look at walkthroughs and stuff, doing the meaningful side content I may have missed the first time around but still...I don't need to catch them all or raise a golden chocobo or find every heart container or kill every enemy in the level to feel satisfied about the game.

If 100% doesn't mean getting all the achievments. Mostly yes unless the game bugs out to much.

I do games 100%. I played Fallout 3 everyday for a month doing everything and finding everything.

Haha, I didn't get all the stars for Super Mario 64. But yeah, I feel the same way too. Why am I putting so much time and effort into fully completing the game when there is still many games left unfinished. (Thanks to Steam Sales :D) But some games I feel like I need to, being a fan of the game I suppose.

I at least try to finish the campaign mode or the main story (for free roam games like Oblivion).

I doubt I'll finish a game like Just Cause 2 or GTA games to 100%.

It really depends on the game.
For example, the last game I beat is Saints Row 2, and after completing the story line I had fun getting all the extra collectibles by using a guide that gave me hints to where they were. Getting them "honestly", however, would have been crazy and I never would have done that.

If a game has achievements I might try to get them all, if I consider them a fun extra challenge. But if they are just "grind achievements" or insanely difficult I have no problem ignoring them.

So, in the end, I go for 100% if I feel that doing so can bring me more fun hours with a game I liked. I never do it for bragging rights only.

I like that, straight to the point.

100% complete is 100% complete. There are some games which dont consider 100% complete until you find every secret, but those really dont count. Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night, for example.

This. And also to give another example, if I play a game such as GTA4 I will finish all the main story and the side missions. As for hunting down the pigeons around the city, it's not worth my time.

I found almost every balloon in Vice City, and turned to a guide for the rest. Became obsessed with it and eventually got to 100% completion. That was probably the first and only time that happens with me.

In nearly every game, I consider a game complete when the end credits roll. (This may or may not mean 100% completion)

I usually don't do side quests unless they bring a benefit to gameplay, but some side quest-y games I have done everything are FO3, Oblivion, GTA IV because the flying rats were the only thing left for completion (Pigeons took around 2-3hrs using a map), SotC.

I mostly don't but some games really pull me in for 100%, Mario Kart DS (excluding developer time trials), Crash Team Racing and Mario 64 DS come to mind.

Isn't that a legal requirement? (It is in my head anyway ;))
Plus I had the added advantage of not spoiling the beautiful bloodstains on my ride with pigeon poop.

I've never completed a game to 100%, I think Skyrim will be the first one I do.

If you mean finding all the collectible items, then no. If you mean completing the campaign/missions, then yes. That is unless the collectibles are worth collecting...

The only game I can remember completing to 100% is Trine, where I collected all of the XP vials and beat the game on Very Hard. Too many games have the "collect random items scattered around the game" mechanic and getting those items gets old fast.

I can't really remember the last game I've hit 100% on, possibly because games I have hit 100% don't have any % indicator, but a list of objectives etc.

When I first got Just Cause 2 I wanted to 100% it... then I realised that it was a nigh impossible feat and left the game at 45% XD
In my defence, that game is HUGE!

I remember beating FF7 with all optional bosses killed, 3 master version of every replicable Materia including the enemy-skill materia with max number of possible skill learned in one playthrough. All character with their ultimate weapon (yes, Barret's Missing Score too), and every none purchasable weapon obtained. My 3 main characters (Cloud, Tifa, Vincent) are 255 maxed out through the use of every available permanent stat raising items. (I morph farmed the hell out of the sunken ship.) And yes, I made Sephiroth my ♥♥♥♥♥.

Didn't do the same in FFX though. I got all the unlocked ultimate weapons, but walking through the entire sphere grid with every character is just a time sink. Tidus's chocobo race is a ♥♥♥♥♥ too. I raged so hard when I was trying to do it.

Edit: I remember one of FF12's katana (or is it ninja sword?) is the final straw for me. The fact it has an extremely low drop rate from a rare monster made me realize what a ♥♥♥♥ty game FF is.

It's essential in doing the entire Sphere Grid to take on the bosses in the Monster Arena and if your lucky like me and have the international copy it's extremely important to have maximum stats and sphere grid to take on bosses like the Dark Aeons.

To be honest I cleared the arena just with auto-life. The final boss took forever, but there was no way I could lose. I didn't even had unlocked any damage break.
I don't know if that strategy would have worked with the Dark Aeons too, though. The only one I killed was the big bird. I lost interest after that.

Why would I lie? But whatever.

People tend to embellish in threads like this. Auto life has to be continuously re-cast to be of any use. You'd be killed then auto life.. then be killed.. then auto life. Where would you get time between attacks? A lot of the arena bosses and the dark aeons will one shot you, penance will destroy you straight up without 99,999hp. You'd need HP Break Limit and than replace a lot of HP Grid spots with the high end HP Bonus ones.. meaning you would of had to go around the grid maximizing the grid. So you either are lying or embellishing a wee bit.

That's why I said it took forever.
I kept doing that until a character who already had auto-life on got a turn, and used that turn to attack.
I believe I also had auto-haste and auto-protect, at least on some of the characters. I don't remember exactly what I did. I just know I did beat it that way.

There is absolutely nothing to embellish here. I took the dullest strategy ever and applied it to the fight.
I wasn't smug about it. It would be like being smug about beating a hard boss in an FPS by exploiting a bug in its AI and getting it stuck behind an object.

I try to, but I'm running out of free time. I just don't have enough of it spare to finish everything I buy anymore. So, to answer your question, sometimes (if it draws me in).

Lately I've been more attracted to games I can't 'finish'. Civilisation V and multiplayer games have been gluing together the sparse time between good SP titles.
