Please answer with some detail, and not just simply naming games. Is it the story? The characters? The graphics? What is it?

Story, characters graphics the whole 9 yards. Being a mature game helps to imo as those are the game i like to play. Blood, swearing, violence and half naked women. ♥♥♥♥ yea.

Frankly, something other then todays cutting edge graphics. I cringe when people list STALKER or Mass Effect 2 in their top ten list of all time favorite games.

If someone walked up to you and said, "I'm gonna give you this paper with a list of games. All you have to do is give your personal metascore for each of them. Do that, and I'll give you $30."

The games listed said paper:

Fallout 3
BioShock
BioShock 2
Penumbra: Overture
Penumbra: Black Plaque
Portal
Portal 2
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

No 30 dollars for me :(

Anyway, for me a 90+ game should be close to perfection.
Fun to play from start to finish, interesting story, "non-horrible" graphics (ie: they don't have to look splendid or super modern, but they must look good), brilliant soundtrack, decent longevity (compared to the price, 10 hours for a full-priced game is *NOT* a decent longevity).
And a lot of other factors which just differ from game to game and are impossible to list.

Keep in mind that Metacritic scores are extremely botched, because they use a conversion system that just doesn't work: many of the "professional" critics they take their scores from use a 5 points rating. You cannot tell me that 4/5 = 80/100 and 5/5 = 100/100. Mathematically, yes, they do, of course. But not in that context. That's why many titles end up having absurdly high scores.

prefer if games are rated separately for SP/MP (story,game-play...) and combined rating for common stuff between SP/MP (graphics,audio...).

let the gamer see what he/she wants out of the game and average out a rating combo accordingly.

like
Single player: 78
Multi player: 91
Technical: 84

Battlefield 2 for example, the last thing I would care about is the included single player. would give it a 90+ even if single player is just rated 50.

Other games like indie games I would probably look at either high SP focused or MP focused and wouldn't mind low technical.

Done.

Also I'd expect a 90+ game to have decent graphics, replayability and a good plot with likable characters (with a single player that's not done within 4 - 5 hours). The game would also have to be shipped without any major bugs.

There are nearly 300 90+ games on Metacritic.
I know some of this is down to personal preference but I honestly don't think there are 300 games that deserve this score.
On average, user scores are a bit lower and more accurate. Just have to ignore the useless polarized opinions.

My favourite 3 games I would score 95% for the overall experience they give. With the 5% buffer in the hope things can improve.

i gotta say...

humorous, lovable characters
a plot line thats funny, like questioning reality and alluding to the fact you are in the game
perfect graphics
enemies that are fun to kill, and alies to play with
non repetitive, yet very, very long (and complete and launch)
i need friends to play on it
decent pricing

well to me, if it's a valve game, it automatically gets an 89.If it goes above that then it surely is something deserving.

Larry1212
04-30-2011, 08:02 AM
I would NEVER give a 90 or 100 unless the game literally blew me away from start to finish. Hell, the thing had better get on it's knees after making me a sandwhich for a 90...

All critics use the 80-100 score set for gaming and we all lap it up because we're used to this. If it's below 80 we generally see a game as crap. If it's above 80 we're lead to believe it's "alright" but nearer 90? It's supposed to be mind blowing although they always end up being mediocre over hyped games.

50 is average. 80 is not. That's all i'm sayin'.

-immersive gameplay
-Intense story (not just Epic, but with a lot of character developping, mysteries, that you wish to discover, ambience, plots etc....)
-Original and captivating world and levels.
-Great and/or original gameplay
-no bugs`
-if multiplayer and single player, must be fun for both, not one barely worked on.
-expendable for further DLC or sequels.
-not too short story
-Big variant between all difficulties (easy for noobs to holy mother that's hard)
-good graphics.
-good art in general
-Good replay value.

[95]Fallout 3
[90]BioShock
[75]BioShock 2
[95]Portal
[96]Portal 2
[80]Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
[85]Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
[65]Call of Duty: Black Ops
[96]The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
[98]Team Fortress 2
[85]Grand Theft Auto IV

Each for different reasons:

Fallout just threw me out there and gave me a world to explore and a story to complete. I loved the capital wasteland, checking out different parts of the map, meeting different type of NPCs. I didn't really care too much about the story, it was just the environment and the gameplay that allowed me to play it just how I want it. It was primarily the gameplay and the environment that kept me going.

Sort of the same deal with the Elder Scrolls IV. Amazing surroundings and vast areas to explore when and how I want to kept me playing.

Team Fortress 2 was my perfect multiplayer game. Not based on pure Deathmatch but rather on teamplay with distinct classes which gave me a great variety in playstyles. It was like playing nine different shooters within the same game.

Both the Bioshocks and the Portal games are brilliant single player games, which provided a tight experience with great story telling through passive infuluences. Hearing Glados/Wheatly in the background while doing the test chambers or listening to the audio tapes in Bioshock while you're actually playing rather than just watching someone being talked to in a cut scene makes a vast difference in my opinion. Probably one of the reasons why I enjoyed Half Life so much. I always felt like I was in control rather than just watching something. If the story is decent and there is even a hint or the illusion of freedom then I don't mind if I'm being pushed down a preset path. I can enjoy just as much or even more than the vast plains of the wastelands or shutting down gates to oblivion.

The Call of Duty games I enjoyed primarily because of their online experience. The single player portion of the games was decent or good in some cases, but were overshadowed by it's only counterpart in my opinion. Simple, easy to pick up action especially in Domination is what kept me playing rather than the mindless shooting of Team Deathmatch.

Grand Theft Auto IV - 90

N/A for any games I haven't played or finished. I like to go by five's for scoring. I enjoyed all the games I rated on the list, so that's why they get a high score.

Fallout 3: This was very fun in the vault, but once I got out I started losing interest. The game actually gave me a headache after a little bit of playing.
Bioshock: What can I say? This game was just great. However, there wasn't much challenge.
Portal: Fun but short.
Portal 2: Fun, but short. Not challenging.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: This had an enjoyable single player, and multiplayer was fun too.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Definitely one of my favorite games. So much to do in this game.
Team Fortress 2: I had to separate the scores because the game has changed drastically. As I see it the art style is completely ruined, which is what really kills it for me. I don't have a problem with new items or hats, as long as the fit the character that wears them. They have killed performance since the original game too.
Grand Theft Auto IV: Fun game, single player was good. Multiplayer never interested me. No where near as fun as San Andreas.

Please answer with some detail, and not just simply naming games. Is it the story? The characters? The graphics? What is it?

1. The engine has to be built from scratch solely with the PC in mind.

2. The multiplayer has to be as moddable as Counter-Strike: Source or better.

3. The multiplayer has to be extremely addicting!

4. The graphics (depends on FPS or RPG) has to be extremely realistic or colorful, but OPTIMIZED!

5. There must be an ability to party with your friends.

6. Must have an advanced anti-cheat engine.

7a. If it is an FPS, it must not have pinpoint accuracy for the weapons if there is the ability to aim down the sights.

7b. If it is an RPG, it must have many quests.

8a. If it is an FPS, it should have a story about the length of Half-Life 2.

8b. If it is an RPG, it should have a story about the length of Half-Life to Episode 2.

9. The developers should be ready to put out patches as fast as Valve or better.

10. It should NEVER have a SUBSCRIPTION FEE or DLC that requires payment.

Enough advertising budget so that >90% of reviewers have ads for that game, and the ads are at a premium rate, ensuring favourable reviewing. Generally not too bad game because the ad-driven reviewing only stretches this far.

Here's the second list:

Alien Swarm - N/A
Amnesia: The Dark Descent - N/A
Borderlands (w/o the expansions) - 90
Evil Genius - N/A
GTA IV: The Lost and Damned - N/A
GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony - N/A

Resident Evil 4 - N/A
Resident Evil 5 - N/A

I haven't played the majority of these, and haven't finished a couple. I've only played the Rift beta, and I don't like paying monthly fee's so I haven't played much of it; I believe it goes in the N/A category.

Borderlands: This game is great even without the expansions. I'm actually planning on playing it again with a friend. There's a lot to do in the game. It allows you to make the game difficult too if you go against higher level enemies.
Left 4 Dead: This is a fun game. The levels and characters are very enjoyable. It's ruined by some people's playstyle; running to the end, sitting in a corner.
Left 4 Dead 2: I don't like this one as much as the first, but it can still be fun. I don't like the levels or the characters as much as the first either. It's still ruined by how people play the game.
Minecraft: So much to do in this game. The only downsides I can think of is how addicting it is!
Poker Night At The Inventory: This game could have been so much more fun with multiplayer. It's not as fun playing against bots.

9/10 game needs to have everything done well.

Performance must be top notch so i'd say games like oblivion and Witcher doesn't deserve those scores they have been given. It needs to be optimised very good and it shouldn't have game breaking bugs at lauch. I allways forgive minor bugs if they doesn't screw up the game.

Graphics isn't the most important aspect in gaming for me but art style, level design, lightning effect, colors are more important. So those must look interesting.

Story depends on a game of course. On games writing doesn't matter as much as presentation, voice acting, cut scenes, cool factor and such.

Gameplay needs to be smooth and not uncomfortable one bit. Controls in other words must be perfect on both kb+Mouse and on controller if supported.

Game length must be good too. Again this depends on game.

Those are pretty much all i ask of 9/10 game and what comes about 10/10 is that they don't exist for me. If there is 10/10 then its only one invidual opinion and 10/10 doesn't exist for masses at least.

Here's few 9/10 games:

Persona 4 ps2
Batman arkham asylum
Darksiders
Resident evil 4 on consoles
Final fantasy 7/10

There's surely more of those but i'm too tired to think all of those if thats even possible.

Great single and multiplayer. Smooth opening launch day, well done audio, amazing soundtrack, re-playability.

Singleplayer needs a well thought out story with a great finish with a possible cliff hanger.

Multiplayer needs to be like something of Battlefield or Team Fortress 2 where the time spent playing is almost endless.
