1. Verify Files.
2. Redownload.
3. Contact Support, after checking this thread for any more (hopefully) helpful replies.

My question is: Why the hell is it installing this stuff in the first place?!?! Its a game not some driver.

Several of the programming libraries used by Universe Sandbox require the Microsoft VC Redist Packages in order to function properly (the 3D engine library and one of the wrapper libraries, for example). It's not because they are drivers.
@SilverPotato
Did you solve the problem?
Please let me know if you're still having trouble.

@SilverPotato
Find the location of the Steam Universe Sandbox install on your hard drive and open the Prerequisite folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\universe sandbox\Prerequisites
Try running the files:
vcredist_x86_2008sp1
vcredist_x86_2010
And note the error that you get. Please report the error back here and we'll figure it out.

A number of games I own require .Net and vcredist installed but because Microsoft sucks at making sure nothing else can mess up those libraries many people have issues trying to get their games that require it running.
Dan - the VC redist's (one of them atleast, believe it to be the 2008sp1 variant) try running everytime on my system (W7 x64, SP1, fully patched) - getting quite annoying with the UAC prompts everytime!
2008sp1 runs and closes silently without an error, but the 2010 executable does error stating there's aleady a newer version installed - could that be related at all?

I'm going to switch the Visual Studio 2010 redistributables to SP1 in the next Universe Sandbox update, that should fix your error.

I'm on a Mac, and i'm using wine to install Skyrim. Whenever I hit play, it gives me that message, and then it says that "setup.exe" crashed, or something. Does anyone here know what I should do?
