Just wondering if anyone else is having problems starting this game?

It starts to load, the mouse cursor disappears, then I see an error stating:

Program :
..eam\steamapps\common\themonsterslayer\garshasp.e xe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more inforamtion.

System Specs:
Win 7 Home Premium x64
6 Gb Ram
Nvidia 280
1Tb HD
Soundblaster X-Fi

I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Note that I've run other games without any issue, including Hydrophobia.

Are you using a gamepad?

I'm getting the same crash on startup. It goes through the initial splash screen and gets to where the nvidia and all the other logos are, then it hangs for a minute, then crashes. Did you find a work around?

I notice my error says it's a Flash.ocx error. But I have the most up to date Flash installed on my system. I know that Steam uses Flash and is based on IE, so I'm wondering what the problem is then.

Running AMD II X4 955 BE
Windows 7-64 bit PE
Nvidia Geforce GTX 295
8 GB G Skill Ripjaw DDR3 1600
Creative X-Fi Extreme

One cause for the crash can be the use of special unicode characters in the windows path where you installed steam.

This seems to be a conflict issue with MMDevAPI.dll which does not belong to the Garshasp game.

The following paragraph from processlibrary.com might help:

Why is mmdevapi.dll giving me errors?
System process errors are mainly due to problems with conflicting applications running on your PC. Consider uninstalling any applications you are not using or use SpeedUpMyPC to selectively disable or remove unnecessary background and auto-start processes. The safest way to stop these errors is to uninstall the application and run a registry scan to remove any residue or corrupt entries.

Go to http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx-9.10.0513-driver.html and download PHYSX system software
Once download is complete, run the file
When installation wizard asks, Select uninstall
After uninstallation, run the system software file again
And Install proper PHYSX drivers this time

Worked for me.

Note:

I did try a reinstall of Physx, as well as DirectX from the Redist folder of the game install.

This did NOT address the original problem.

I'm still talking with the folks at support. We'll see if they come up with any other ideas.

So I have a dual boot system. Downloading now in XP to see if it's playable on the same machine. I've been back and forth with Garshasp support, and they have been most helpful. Unfortunately, I still can't get it to work in Win7 on my rig.

so far so good. plays great on XP. hangs after quitting game and going directly to windows though. kind of a pain. other than that. It's a DX9 game, so I'm not really sweating DX10 or 11 in Win7. Still, would like to get the game running. downloading and reinstalling Physx software did nada for me. Thanks for the input though.

With 3 set-ups I had the game not wanting to start up on me, which I though was really odd. But after simply restarting my pc it would work. I'm pretty sure that it won't work for most of you now, but just throwing it out there.

I have Windows 7, 64bit.
Compatibility mode doesn't help.
Reinstalling physX didn't help.
Unchecking HDR did nothing.
Restarting my pc didn't help.

I had the crash problem with flash.ocx listed as the crash report.

I first uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Flash player (both IE and Firefox versions). This didn't work.

It appears there is a problem with the flash.ocx file in the Garshasp install directory.

The reason I say this is because I replaced the flash.ocx file found in the ...\themonsterslayer\distro directory.

I searched for flash.ocx on my hard drive and had 2 versions. One in the distro dir and another in the windows\syswow64\... that said something like flash10b.ocx. I renamed the flash.ocx in the distro dir to back it up and than copied the flash10b.ocx file to the distro dir and changed the name to flash.ocx.

I apologize for it not being clearer but I have a very bad cold and I did this last night. I just did a search on my computer to find the exact name of the other flash ocx file, but I can't find it (I know it was there!!!) I ran a search for it right after I did the reinstallation, so it may have been removed after a turned off my computer for the night (why I don't know, but I can't find the file).

I can tell you that I am able to play Garshasp now after replacing that file. Hopefully this helps the devs to fix the problem.

One more thing, I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, just in cast that makes a difference.

Awesome find Syrene, thank you !

I had the same problem, crash after the logos intro, so I did a search for flash.ocx and I found an old Flash10h.ocx from 2010. I replaced the one in distro folder, and now I'm able to finally play the game.

I hope that could help more players !

It works now!

I downloaded flashplayer10-3_rc1_activex_042011 from adobe, installed it and found a file Flash10p.ocx in my folder C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash. I copied this file to the Garshasp distro folder and renamed it Flash.ocx

By the way: I only used Chrome as a browser and it has native Flash, but usually not the newest version and one cannot update it manually. It could help some people to use another browser to download the flash installer from adobe.

There is an 64bit Flash version called "square" over at adobe, however this gave me another error when replacing the distro\flash.ocx.

Moreover some of the installers I downloaded from adobe didn't give me an flashxxx.ocx

Here is the Link to the one I used:

I have the same issue with the MMDevAPI.dll

I am not sure why this is an issue. The rest of my Steam games work great. why is this a problem all of a sudden? All my drivers are up to date.

Is it possible to get a refund? I feel kinda jipped paying 17.99 and not even getting it to load. I have Win 7 Home Premium 64bit. Shouldnt be an issue.

Can anyone help?

Syrene's solution to the flash.ocx problem looks like a good one, unfortunately it still did not fix my error of simply not working in windows 7 64bit.

For now, no reply from Garshasp support yet, but given the timezones, they will in about 5-6 hours. (Morning there)

Will keep you posted, Syrene good fix on the flash problem :)

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd316780(v=vs.85).aspx

"For simplicity, the preceding diagram shows only an audio-rendering data path to the endpoint device—the diagram does not show an audio-capture data path. The core audio APIs include the MMDevice API, WASAPI, the DeviceTopology API, and the EndpointVolume API, which are implemented in the Audioses.dll and Mmdevapi.dll user-mode system modules."

So this apparently is the developers fault and not ours. It is a shame when this happens to indie developers, but I guess it is good experience for them. I will now be extra cautious when buying from indie developers. Almost 20 dollars may not seem a lot, but I could have used that for something more stable.

I feel ripped off.

I'm glad I could help you guys with the flash.ocx issue.

I've been poking around on about mmdevapi.dll....

Like Ankfirekth, what I've seen about it relates to audio files.....

From what I understand, since these guys are Iranian, they had to use a lot of free/cheap dev tools.

If I were to guess at the problem based on what I've seen (for Armed Assault (http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=85958) and Bioshock (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1092401.html)), the problem may be related to OpenAL.

I have a Creative SB-X-Fi with the most up-to-date drivers from Creative and I also have OpenAl installed and I can get it to play (and have played it - wish I wasn't so sick so I could play it )

I can't be certain, but I'd make certain the sound drivers are up to date and make certain OpenAL is installed. Hopefully that will help you guys......

Some of the problems get fixed if you run the game in windowed mode once and then switch back to full screen. You can do this using the Config application. This solves the issues with some graphics cards. We are trying to find out about the reason. Another area we are investigating is the MMDevAPI.dll problem.
It is suggested to install the latest version of OpenAL.

What kind of soundcard are you using? Does your motherboard have integrated audio. If you're using a soundcard, has the integrated audio been disabled? More often than not, it is a driver issue with integrated sound on mobos.

I have an integrated soundcard yes, I have an Asus ROG Crosshair IV Formula motherboard and it comes with a VIA integrated soundcard but gets bumped to a Creative Soundblaster X-FI 7.1 Motherboard edition by drivers from both VIA and Creative themselves. Those drivers have always worked and are fully up to date too. Also all games worked perfect with it. Never had sound problems before.

Look up the motherboard on the Asus website if you like and check the specs.

I tried this way.
But the result is the same(the game crash during startup).
I can't play this game since it release in the Steam.
I wish the game developer can make a new patch to solve this issues.

A patch has been submitted to steam to fix the MMDevAPI.dll and Flash.ocx issues. You should be able to get it hopefully soon.

@rx93whsvu: it would help a lot if you sent the crash logs and game logs to support@garshasp.com to investigate your issue.

You can find the logs at:
%appdata%\deadmage\garshasp\logs

Thank you.

after fiddling with sound drivers and programs I managed to get it running, however there are a few issues. Music/sound only works when menus are opened. In-game play and cut scenes are silent.

Also, some design issue apparently... changing the resolution only does that...In the sense that an 800x600 resolution, even when in full screen, shows up as small as it would be if it was in windowed mode, with a black border all around the screen.

There is some stuttering on some occasions, irrespective of the resolution.

As regards controls, the camera sometimes rotates so much at every step you take that it feels like i'm trying to play while drunk, it gets particularly frustrating when you need to jump over platforms, for which by the way, the character has no edge recognition... so, a wrong step forward and you've fallen. I was expecting this to be a little more prince of persia like, in this sense.

If you get a Flash.ocx conflict, one work around is to just delete the flash.ocx in the "distro" folder of the game.

You can find the game files at the /steamapps/common/themonsterslayer folder where your steam client is installed.

I did it and it worked fine. Thx, now I'm enjoying the game!

But just to notice that I had a flash10d.ocx, and when i replaced the game flash.ocx by this one it didn't work.

So I uninstalled Flash player with Ccleaner then I deleted the folder "Flash" of flash player located at
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed and I reinstalled flash player for internet explorer (the 32Bite version)(when reinstalling flash player with Firefox you don’t get the flash10q.ocx file).
By doing so I got the file named "Flash10q.ocx" in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash which I copied renamed and replaced in the distro folder located at F:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\themonsterslayer\dist ro

That worked for me! thanks to every one who posted in order to get the game running!:D

A patch has already been submitted to Steam. It will hopefully be available by Monday morning.

The patch should solve the crash issue related to MMDevAPI.dll.

I tried both Harlequin and spypredator methods but didn't work for me. The steam client only says it is preparing to launch the game but then nothing happens.

The only time this game worked for me was when I disabled my realtek soundcard and activated it again, but then again... the game had no sound during gameplay

I can't get this right. Hopefully the patch will solve this

What physx driver should I install really since I'm not using a GeForce card?

Also, this thing isn't working anymore since I deleted the flash.ocx ... it's getting from bad to worse, now not even the window which says "not responding" opens up. This is requiring too much work for a game.

garshasp
05-16-2011, 09:20 PM
You just need to install the latest PhysX system software which you can get from the web or find in the redist folder of the game. ATI card or NVidia does nor really matter.

Please send your latest log files to support@garshasp.com

Also the game starts up and gives the NVIDIA and other logo's, then it crashes.

It can't be my PC...
Just bought a brand new specially built gaming PC.

What could be the problem? What i do notice was that the first install was a matter of secondes, where most games usually take a minute or two

At least you're seeing something. I don't even get that far. My game crashes before any logo or intro is displayed.

Hey guys
I had the crash during the startup that occurs when the physx logo ect appear

Microsoft Viual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program:

hope this helps:D

sended the new logs in, hopefully you can fix this once and for all please, even my patience is starting to run thin at the moment.

garshasp

If you can not even run the Game Configuration application, the probable cause can be a problem in the game prerequisite software. You can install these software manually from the redist folder where the game files exist.

Another odd thing I've noticed, is that since the game was updated via Steam, I now see a 'installing flash' every time I start the game.

Sill getting crash at startup, no logos displayed. Configuration utility DOES run though.

@Swakke: your log files show that you are not using the steam version of the game. Have you copied over any files from the internet?

This game was purchased here on Steam, i mailed the info of that.
But I think I forgot 1 thing, since I installed the game and try to do all the work arounds that got presented here on the forum, I might have left over files that got stuck behind, so i manually deleted everything, even the info in the appdata folder in my documents.

I am in the middle of fully redownloading Garshasp here on Steam and I will let you know by email if this did indeed fix the issue.

thanks for pointed that out to me, I totally forgot about that.

Still facing startup crash...
The game starts, up till the nvidia logo etc... Then it just crashes.

Have verified the integrity of game cashe, all ok.

Can't put my dxdiag here because it's too long... I'll put it in the next 3 posts.

By the way... I am able to run just about any other game on the highest settings... (Total War: Shogun 2 for example)

Well good news! My game works!

turned out to be a problem with the PhysX drivers from nVidia
so uninstall those, no need for a reboot, and install the latest ones again.

problem solved! actually solved the problem of some games not starting, i am so happy!

Game crashes here too. Ogre.log says
17:48:58: OGRE EXCEPTION(8:RuntimeAssertionException): Unable to load the Flash ActiveX control. in FlashControl::createControl at .\source\FlashControl.cpp (line 145)
Sent a mail to the support.

EDIT: k, got it running using this (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1959000) method.

The first time I installed Garshasp it worked fine. But after shutting down my laptop for the night it stopped working. I tried to reinstall the game and uninstalling/reinstalling certain redist files it still wont work. I got it to work by editing the register.

Uninstall Garshasp from steam and then close steam completely. Then type regedit in run/start search and run it. Then go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Valve and rename the Valve folder to Valve_old. Then restart steam and reinstall Garshasp.

This worked for me, even after shutting down my laptop a couple of times.

I'm not sure, if it has already been said. But I found a simple solution for the crash before entering the main menu with the errormessage about missing flash.ocx on my Win7 64bit System.

Steam does not install the required ActivX Flash Version autmoatically besides the installer is in the folder and you may think you have the newest version of Flash. Just Open up your Steam-Folder/steamapps/common/themonsterslayer/ and execute "install_flash_player_10_active_x.exe"

This has fixed it for me.

Well,

For what it's worth, I finally got this game to work. It looks like they have a major compatibility issue with Windows 7 x64.

I had sent Dead Mage log files some time ago, and never received a reply. Also tried the suggestions I could find, still no dice.

Finally, today after I had re-installed it for the umpteenth time, I decided to turn on compatibility for Win XP SP3. To my surprise, it actually loaded to the main menu.

I played it briefly, and didn't see any problem.

Go figure.

***POSSIBLE FIX***
If you've tried all of the redist stuff as I had, navigate to %appdata%/deadmage/garshasp/ and delete the 2 xml config files there. Config app then launched successfully and allowed me to set the game up again. Game itself also runs fine now.

Seems the Garshasp dev folk need better error trapping...

During a CS right before the final battle I got a BSOD(first ever on this rig) after recovering, launching the game gave me the OP's issue.

Nothing work as far as any mentioned fix here.

What did work for me finally was deleting ther very last save file thats located in the appdata/roaming/deadmage/garshasp/profiles/profiles_garshasp/saves folder. All the saves have dates and times in the name so finding the oldest save is simple.

If anyone is still having this issue maybe this will help.

On a side note actually giving the game a chance it wasnt as horrible as I originally thought and if there is ever a sequal I would probably play it.
