Alright, I bought the game yesterday, and since I haven't been able to launch it. It's because XNA 4.0 won't install correctly, and I'm not sure how to fix it. When I try to install it from the windows website i get a "Error 2908". I've uninstalled then re-installed the .NET Framework 4.0 multiple times, and that hasn't worked. I've also updated my graphics card, so that's not it either.
Any tips?

ive uninstalled, reinstalled, repaired, updated, deleted older versions to prevent conflicts. changed my sound card and audio options. downloaded xnaf and windows .net and installed manually. NOTHING! this is the biggest load of horse♥♥♥♥ ever. im not mad i paid 10 bucks for a game that doesnt work. what pisses me off is that steam released a game that doesnt work AT ALL. it wont even go to the title screen. and everything i do does nothing. i give it a week. if this isnt fixed by then im boycotting this developer.

I'm not sure if it's the developers fault, as it seems that XNAF is just faulty or something

Try renaming %SystemRoot%\system32\mscoree.dll, installing XNA, then changing the name back.

does it matter what I rename it?
Edit: I can't rename it... apparently I don't have permission despite being an administrator
Did you go to Properties->Security and give yourself permission to rename it? I don't remember if you have to do that for just the file or the directory.

Alright, so I figured out how to rename the file, but that didn't work either....
Bleh, is this something that could possibly be fixed in a future update, or is it just my computer or something?

Mine wouldnt start before either, but i fixed it and it is now running. What i did, was uninstall the .net 4 extendable and the client profile through the add/remove programs, aswell as the XNA 4.0 redistributable. After that, i restarted and then ran terraria through steam, which then proceeded to install both through the startup setup. It than ran fine.

Nah, I've tried that a million times by now :P
Thanks though

same thing is happening to me. .net framework installed correctly once, but the game just didn't launch, instead i got that steam deals thing that pops up when you leave a game. pretty damn annoying.

Same problem here. XNAF seems to be flawed in some way. I've spent a good 8 hours total trying to fix this, and trust me, I've read and thought of just about everything I can, and tried them. I've tried the .NET Framework fix, the audio USB fix, compatability, and many others, many times. I'm almost happy I'm seeing a decent bit of threads like this, so I know I'm not alone in this.
But people seem to enjoy this game soooo much, and I really want to play. I bought a copy for my fiancee, and her's works fine, though she won't play without me, so she's being deprived of it too, since I can't play.
Is there any other kind of fix out there? Is there some kind of patch in the works? I just want some kind of feedback so I know SOMETHING, ANYTHING is being done to fix this problem.

Bump.
Would like to know if anyone else out there is still having this problem, with no fix in sight?

Alright, well I just realized that this might be a problem with the .net 4.0... When I try to run a few certain programs, I get an error that says something along the lines of "You need Microsoft.NET Framework 4.0.30319", despite the fact that I've already uninstalled, reinstalled, and repaired it multiple times....
Anyone know the fix to this?

Actually, now that you mention it, I've had that problem pop up when first-time installing games time and again, and for a while now too. I wouldn't doubt something is wrong. Any ideas, anyone?

I know this may sound silly for some of you, but I just reinstalled steam and I am finally able to launch it.
Restart your computer and it should work.

Mind telling us what that "little install thing" is? Some people are dying to fix this. (that includes me. :( )

I wouldn't bother making a steam forum name for this problem if I hadn't exhausted all other means of getting this to work. Restarting my computer was among the first things I tried.
There seems to be quite a few people with the exact same problem, and there's no real fix other than spending an hour uninstalling every single .NET Framework version like a reverse nesting doll, then trying to start the game, but that's not working for most, it seems.

Well, I've had the exact same problem all day. Really getting on my nerves now I've wasted hours trying every method people have mentioned I've been all across the forums, and finally found others who can't get it fixed with that stupid XNA and .NET reinstall. So yeah I'm just leaving this reply in hopes the devs understand how many people are unable to play the game we paid for, and Steam doesn't even refund, moneygrabbing @#@**@#*

Windows 7/Vista
@TehRealAssassin
Agreed. Money stealing devs. We payed and didn't get anything.
Isn't this a perfect reason to file a lawsuit?

I had this same problem. Installed every available Windows 7 update and it works fine for me now.

Yeah, I'm using Windows 7. I've done every available update and still... Nothing. This is getting beyond the point of trying, I just at least want my money back, but no Steam won't because they think all there games are 'pristine'.

Best I can figure is it's some kind of royal screw up on Microsoft's side. .NET has some kind of flaw in it that doesn't update Windows 7 64x correctly. You can apparently just copy files from the update and apply them to your computer to fix their mistake, but it'll still likely take hours to get it all working right.
In short, it's not Terraria's fault if it doesn't work for you, it's Microsoft's. We can wait months for them to fix it, or try to find a fix ourselves.
Anyone else feel boned?
