Alt-tab out of the game, click on your volume control and then go to volume mixer. Singularity for some reason is by default really low (When it should be at the same level as the master volume). So turn that volume up and you should hear better.

Permanent non-alt-tab solution:
On windows 7, sound volume is set low everytime you launch the game.
To fix this problem, go to control panel - sound and at the communications tab,"when windows detect communication activity" check "do nothing,"
(by default volume is set to be reduced by 80%).

Same here. I am on an X-Fi Soundblaster PCIE. I can turn it up but if I have Xfire open, any alert just blasts out into my room like a 747 engine.
The "Do Nothing" does not fix the sound for me. Win 7 64-bit
Hope someone figures out the low sound trouble. :o

Crap, I tried both solutions and it's still mute to me on Windows 7. Anyone else have this problem?

Try running in stereo only.
Right click on the speaker in the lower right, select playback devices, highlight whatever you are currently using, the press configure in the bottom left. Replayed this game a little today, found that I was having issues now in 5.1 that I didn't in regular stereo the last time I played.
