Well i was playing around with hammer and come up with some pretty freaky stuff.
1) Portal cube (http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197996458271/screenshot/560909119917770373?tab=public) - fires portals, players or extra set. not sure on how i want to activate it.
2) Gel Cube (http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197996458271/screenshot/560909119917802166/?tab=public) - dispenses gel. Have no use for it but was fun tye-die ing the room.
3) Handheld portal (http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197996458271/screenshot/560909119917759224/?tab=public) (literaly). (The portal paradox for real!). Pretty much its a wall that you can pickup and move around with a portal on it,
what happens when you drop it in your other portal? it gets stuck. If you go through with it in your hand you fly out crazily. It also spazes open and close if you look into them both.
For those of you interested it is pretty much just a func_brush parented to a small func_physbox that you carry. Note: set sv_movable_portals 1 (or something along those lines, don't remember off of the top of my head).
Has anyone else came up with any crazy new, original testing elements/ideas?
Edit: for all those whiners. I have got energy balls working.
And, this isn't including all of my crazy worldportal stuff (walk on ceiling (http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197996458271/screenshot/558656600827853230/?tab=public), etc).

Well, I didn't do it, but another guy in a different thread made antimatter spheres.
Nice creations there, BTW.

Dude made a time travel map.

The portal cube seems like a great idea. It does need a laser targeting system though, so you can see where it's going to shoot. A bind would be the right way to activate imo.

You can activate it with a button in the map or a button on the cube (func_button + prop_dynamic).
My test with a button in the map : http://www.mediafire.com/?26luawcq26jlz6h
Player = blue portal
Cube = orange portal
Some bugs :
-Sometimes, the player can pick up the portal gun that is inside the cube.
-The player drops the cube automatically.

That hand-held portal thing should be considered. At least something you can put a portal on, then transfer.

I came up with the Asbestos Remover (read: Excursion Funnel detector) and Exotic Matter Cube (read: Combine Ball holder which activates special buttons when there is a ball inside). I can post VMFs if you would like.

Make new kinds of gels, like reflection gel. That redirects thermal discouragement beams and reflects portal shots, which would allow you (if you set it up at the right angle) to shoot portals around corners. And you could cover cubes in it, which would let you bounce lasers off cubes (you could strategically set up cubes in certain locations to solve puzzles). And maybe if you cover objects in the gel they're invincible to emancipation fields! Or if you put it on glass, it would refract lasers instead of reflecting them.

Good ideas. But how would they be coded....I guess portal physics can be used as a mirror (But then the visual needs to be reversed), and people have done reflections with the beams before with metallic surfaces in their maps...I guess a Boolean would just be needed for the emancipation grill proofing.
Edit: Just so you know I was imagining the reflecting gel to be reflective in itself and have a metallic texture. :D

The portable portal (redundant name) has been already done in Portal 1.

Dang, I guess you beat me to it. I was actually going to use a cube that sprays gels for a limited time, making the player have to figure out how to get to where they want to put the gel after they have just put the cube in a "Gel Refilling Station" (working on parenting issues). I was going to use the movable portal panel too so that the player would have to put a portal on the panel and slide it into an area to access another room.
Heck, while I'm at it:
1)I also have a paint hose and a laser that can be picked up and moved around.
2)Currently, I'm working on making glass that can only be broken by exploding a turret next to it.
3)I also had a future idea for turrets that can be parented to a robotic arm and can be moved and be indestructable besides lasers.
4)Box that sprays gel only when a laser is going through it (redirection cube)
5)A whole "Aperture Military Weapons Course" which includes a bomb launcher, a portable laser (as mentioned earlier), and a LOT of turrets.
I have been working on finishing my maps More for ideas and less for looks, so the first one is a playground map with TOTAL freedom) with a whole bunch of unique ideas before they start becoming not-so-unique (I guess I'm a bit late...). I'll maybe post some pre-production pics later...
I currently have a redirection in my playground map where you can control which gel you shoot using a game_ui. I nickneamed it "The God Cube" because it is the perfect weapon against turrets. It's pretty fun actually and it looks pretty cool.
Please no one steal ideas...

Yeah, I've never really used hammer, so I wouldn't know how hard it is to code these things. I'm just thinking of how great of a puzzle mechanic it would be :D
