OK,
First of all, are you allowed to host a game using the Source Dedicated Server Client, and then join the game via CSS?
I can create a dedicated server, everyone in the game can play fine, however, the second I join the game the server starts lagging to the point it is unplayable. I am on a 1.5MBit connection, so there is plenty of speed and bandwidth.
Any ideas on what would cause this?

I can't really answer your first question, but lag can have many causes, my best guess would be that your PC hardware is not able to do both: running a server and playing CSS.
In the task manager (press ctrl+alt+delete) you can see the cpu and memory usage. Run the server and game at the same time and see how much cpu and memory is used. If cpu usage is more then 80/90% or you have little memory left lag issues can occur.

that is such a STUPID thing to do.
you dont make a DS then join it, no, end of story. At LEAST not on the same computer! If your going to do that, then use another computer for the DS, and youll need 2 steam accounts.

Sorry, I seemed to leave out an important part.
My friend (whose computer is worse in everyway as compared to mine) was able to host a game using the DS and then join it, and we could play just fine.
Lady Racquel, I will try what you suggested when I get back to my dorm room.

there isn't anything wrong with hosting a DS on your own comp then playing on it...but if your comp isn't up to it then you will lag..and lag everyone else..its your choice though...its your comp, and your server. NO ONE has the right to tell you not to do what you want...i wouldn't reccomend running a DS at same time as playing unless you have a high end comp though..at least..not for source...why don't you make a listen server? (the in game on...where it says create game) it can do just about anything a DS can...cept stay up 24/7 without the game in memory
