Edge Of Pain

I have successfully created a Garry's Mod dedicated server, but my friends can't join since it's considered a LAN server, because I see my local IP address appear in the command windows.
As a result that means only people on my network can join the server.
when my friends try to join my server they get the "server is not responding" message. My ports are forwarded correctly (27015). I have tried sv_lan 0 and put that into the server.cfg file as well and it still won't work.
Will changing my IP from static to dynamic make it work?
I know that my external IP is different to my local IP, but the server isn't using my external IP, it's using my local IP.
Is there a way to make the server use my external IP, so that others can connect?
A way of getting friends to connect is by using the "connect <*IPgoeshere*>" command, but that's not possible because it's using my local IP.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks in advance.
