Hi,

I'm really enjoying this game. But I'm getting so frustrated trying to drift well. Are there any tips to get me drifting decently? BTW I'm using a 360 controller.

drifting also got me frustrated. I even bought a steer, hoping the issue was just bad keyboard controls ;) It didn't help. All I can say: practice. And use manual gear shifting :)

I use a 360 controller as well. The easiest way i found was quickly steer away from the turn, then quickly steer into the turn while either pinning the gas, or tapping the e-brake then hitting the gas. once you are sideways rev your motor to control the angle and speed of your drift. Let go of the gas when you are finished.

Also practice.

I use the keyboard...best drift car for a beginner is the AE86 corolla. and to practice go into the hks freestyle to learn drift technique. My max score so far is over 58 million points. To start off accelerate off the grid and shift into second gear. STAY IN THAT GEAR THE ENTIRE TIME. then all you have to do is mainly steer into the corner and quickly counter steer after words. tap e-brake while accelerating at full throttle to maintain the drift. to cancel it; simply floor the car and slightly counter steer in the direction you want to go and it will go there.

Cheers for the replies. I've always stuck with auto, so this may be the problem.

the first car I drifted in was the rx7? I can't drive in any other ones.

I started drifting using a keyboard and got pretty good too. But once I got a 360 pad it got a lot easier.

Once you understand the physics, it's a walk in the park. Try drifting around a figure of 8, or around a block to begin with.

Once you get the hang of it you will be scoring millions of points with 60+ multipliers :D

Oh, and you don't need manual gears to be good at drifting :)

Well I'll try explaining it a bit.

Preferably you need manual transmission so you can have more control over the power of your car because with automatic transmission if your car starts to redline it just changes gears automatically and the RPM's drop which make you lose power to your wheels.

When your car is drifting, counter steer by steering into the direction your car is traveling and to make sure you sustain the drift just feather the throttle.
The RPM's need to be high as you're feathering so that if your car starts to straighten out mid-drift you just apply more throttle to spin the wheels out and sustain the drift

The basic method of initiating a drift is to use your E-brake so that it'll spin out the rear end of your car. Then counter steer and also feather the throttle to maintain the drift.

A more advanced method is when you're turning into a corner downshift as you're going into the corner so you can achieve higher RPM's
These higher RPM's will make the wheels spin out and make your car initiate the drift

Another method is as you're entering the corner slam on the brakes as you're cornering so that that rear end of the car will spin out.
This should initiate drifting and you also sustain it by feathering the throttle.

I do a mix of these things sometimes when I'm drifting in GRID.
But from my experience, the important thing for me when it comes to drifting is maintaining high RPM's so that you can sustain drifts..

Drifting in an auto will cause you problems. To score better points, you need to have a decent speed. Holding 2nd all the way is not good, it limits your speed, but keeps the power planted.

I shift up to 3rd, and get as close to those sticks as possible, and I use a keyboard all the way.

You have all the road to use and it's the person with the highest score than wins, so I always let everyone else go first so they're out of my way and can not ruin my drift

i just used the GT500 and it seemed pretty easy. Use handbrake counter-steer and be very responsive with the throttle.

A side note for any drifting fans, The drifing in Shift 2 is wicked hard, but fantastically realistic feeling. This game is much more forgiving.

Rx7 should be used here. No need for the hand brake...just throttle the p!ss out of it and balance your steering. I was lost when I fist tried, but then I got a million points 30 mins later.

I use the Soarer in auto with a keyboard. I think my highest drift score in career mode is 3½ million - I'm sure that with a decent setup and some skill you can get many orders of magnitude higher than that, but I just want to get the race seasons done...

I use automatic trans with a 360 controller and have finished every race with at least a million points over my competition.

If you really need practice or want to start off, stick with automatic and go to race day. Set up a long race with just yourself in Freestyle Drift on the Freestyle Arena D map. Drive around until you find a 'city block' area where you can just go around the same block over and over. That's the cheap places guys go when they want to show off 50+ multipliers because its so easy to continuously drift around them once you get the hang of it. I would try starting off with a car with lower acceleration as this will help keep you from spinning out. Lets assume you're coming up on a right hand turn, just hit the gas and as you approach the turn, steer right. As soon as your car gets turned slightly, hit your e-brake then jam on the gas. This will get you used to forcing your car into a slide. To turn a slide into a drift, pump the gas and turn your wheel to the left as it starts sliding around the right hand turn. After you get the basics down the only thing to work on is how much gas to give and how much to turn your car to the outside of the turn in order to keep the drift going.
