Hey, I think Valve should ban all DRM other than Valve's own. Some of the DRM is hard to remove from computers, some DRM limits the amount of total installs possible, other DRM is obtrusive (Ubisoft's constant online check), and some DRM slows down computers.

Valve's proprietary DRM is the least obtrusive DRM used by PC gaming companies. With Steam DRM I maintain the 3 most important privileges I want when installing software.

1. Ability to install my games as often as I like and to play as much as I like
2. Peace of mind my PC isn't being infected by SecuRom or some other rootkit
3. Ability to play my games a without having to maintain constant internet connection

The restrictions for publishing on the steam store should be no DRM or Valve DRM.

Steam is the largest digital game distribution store, and has the largest purchasing power. Quite frankly, if a publisher chooses not to comply by the rules opposed above, they would probably lose a lot of sales. I know that I will not buy any game with DRM unless it is on Steam, and due to a negative experience I have had recently with Ubisoft DRM, I will not buy any game with DRM unless it is Steam DRM.

i agree almost completely.
but... the idea of disallowing all other forms of DRM sounds kinda... um... evil...

sure, steam DRM is acceptable, but i mean enforcing it sounds... dark.

Under my proposal you could still release the game without DRM.

I see no justification for any more DRM than a call to the steam license servers, and then the game starts. This takes virtually no money to implement.

I have no issue with other DRM on steam when a game releases.

But leaving the DRM on steam forever is silly, there should be a 12 month limit or until the game is pirated, once it is pirated the whole point of extra DRM is lost.
