I'm curious, does it really make a difference to knock someone out or to just outright "make them sleep"?
Curious, I just knock them out to be safe and nice I guess.
Thanks!
I just sneak past them :)

i played the game some years ago - but as i remember it doesnt make a real difference.
but garrett sometimes says (not only in thief 3 but in the earlier Dark Projekt 1 and 2 too) that "he´s not a killer".
so - as long as you have other choices you really shouldn´t kill random people who are just doing their jobs.
i mean - whats the point in killing guards? they are dumb, slow and annoying - but is that enough to kill them just because they´re in the way?
i dont think so. it also makes the game more fun when trying to avoid killing.

Definitely, makes it more sneaky and realistic.
iirc in one of the 2 original thief games killing someone would mean you failed the mission (unless im thinking of something else).

The worst part is that it does no longer make a difference even on higher difficulty settings. Do whatever you please.
Not killing is a lot harder.

No you are thinking the right thing. You could kill enemies on easy difficulty but a real thief (player on anything higher than easy) was not allowed to kill.

Yeah, that was also what was great about the early Splinter Cell games, compared to Conviction. Not killing the enemies, was the true mark of a stealthy player. That's the same way I always played Thief. At most, I'd use the Billy Club on someone in my way.

Kinda been killing indiscriminately trying to get back to where I was in the demo as quick as possible. Once I get there I'll go back to stealth again. Really like this game, very Splinter Celly.:)
PS: Do I have to get the % treasure shown in the objectives to finish the mission? I mean will it keep me in the mission until I have whatever the requirement is or do I just fail?

I believe it will just keep you in the mission until you get that required percent loot!
Thanks for the input points. I figured that were no factorial consequences to killing folks, besides the definite blood spill that would leave foes wondering who bled them-self silly on the ground, haha.
I prefer to knock people out, as it's an entertaining thought to think of a guard or individual had been knocked out by a thief, while they were robbed blind and could do NOTHING about it; YEE-HAW!
I think the few times I find killing justified is with some folks who seem to be bad or just malicious, besides myself haha, like that "noble lady" after the first mission in the city; in my mind, she would have kept after me, and in this way, she can do nothing else to harm someone. [Same thing for the thugs too.]

Well, each has their advantages and disadvantages. Quick rundown:
KO:
-Often harder to pull off. You need a Blackjack them while they're unaware of you or use some kind of Gas Weapon. A flashbomb will stun an opponent and allow you to blackjack them. (At least, in the first couple of games you could.)
-Doesn't work on certain enemies, such as the Undead.
-On higher difficulty levels, you will not be allowed to kill non-combatants and sometimes not even combatants. KOing them will stop them from spotting you and running off for help.
Killing:
-You've got a bigger range of options. Sneak attack them with a backstab or arrow to the head for an instant kill. If your opponents are alert you can kill them with a wide variety of killin' implements.
-Is often noisier than KOing. Especially if your opponents are attacking you already.
-Some kill methods will leave bloodstains, which can alert guards. You can clear them up with water arrows.

In the old games, if you played expert, you couldn't ever kill anyone. And that was a heck of a lot of fun and challenge.

You can self-impose that easily.

In Thief: Deadly Shadows killing an enemy typically leaves a blood stain that will alert enemies even if you hide the corpse. If you blackjack them / knock them unconscious then there is no blood stain.
If you do choose to kill someone you can get rid of the blood stain with a water arrow.
