View Full Version : I love this game!

Okay, I just played the demo a second time - this time as the fighter.
People who are saying this game is ugly are nuts. Maxed out, at 2560x1440, with 8x AA, the game looks fantastic, and runs ultra, ultra smoothly. I loved watching the melee guy sprinting across that bridge with his sword over his head.
I really enjoyed Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance on the Xbox, and this feels like a very souped up version of that, but with better and more diverse characters, and a much deeper combat system.
Day one for me, no question about it. Will Diablo 3 kill this game dead? No question about it. But I don't expect every title to be of that caliber. In a perfect world, yes. But we don't live in a perfect world. For me, this will be a great way to spend the upcoming long weekend in July. Super pleased with this now. I kind of liked it at first - but now I really like it a lot.
P.S. buy a controller. LOL!

Ok. 1- shut up about that crappy 360 controller. What, are you an M$ employee or something?
2- The game IS dead. Obsidian killed it before it was released.

I'm glad you enjoyed the game. Good for you, man.
There is a good reason why I want to play this game with the Xbox controller on a PC and not on Xbox 360 (besides from not owning a console...):
The game supports Nvidia 3D vision so I can play it in stereoscopic 3D. And the game looks awesome in 3D!
I love it, too.
I am happy that you guys are happy. Run free!

Pretty much the same here. I stopped playing the demo because I just wanted to go further.
I just hope they make the non-controller setup a little nicer, but it's not a deal breaker. I actually have a 360 controller, but I prefer mouse+keyboard where possible in most PC games (especially RPGs).

i stopped playing the demo just after the temple. i knew all i wanted to know about the game, and didnt want to spoil the full game by seeing more.
the game having controller support sold it for me on the pc. just like duke nukem having controller support made me get the pc version aswell.
i hope more games bring controller support to pc games, its far more convenient for me when lying on my bed. using a mouse and keyboard whilst lying on your side in a bed is impossible unless you want discomfort coupled with a numb arm after 10 minutes.

I have a state of the art PC and absolutely prefer the controller, which is a great device. A keyboard, by the way, is also a controller, as is the mouse.
Nevertheless, it's an age old argument, and not even an interesting one.
I wish I had stopped playing the demo, like you did - but I never actually wanted to buy this title. I just suddenly realized that what I was playing wad a much better version of Dark Alliance or that D&D game, Heroes.
I also want to play the game fresh. I made the mistake of spending literally 20 hours with the Mafia 2 demo, just driving around. By the time I actually got the game, some of the magic had worn off.

I'm actually surprised people are hating on it so much >.>
First thing that I noticed when playing the demo is that it a) ran super smooth, and b) nearly no glitches or bugs. One in fact. Lucas decided he didn't want to talk to Leona face to face, lol...did you know they don't animate the PC's face when they talk? :p
Mind you, I didn't run into too many bugs in New Vegas (and those were more tied to Bethesda crappy engine then Obsidians work) or Alpha Protocol, so I'm not one of those bandwagonners that like to say "Obsidian releases buggy games LOL".
Most importantly, it was tough, but fair. Prior to some of the tougher fights, you felt like a BAMF. Blade dashing enemies was amusing as they would fly over cliffs as they died. Loved watching that.
I've played all the Dungeon Sieges to this point (save xpacs), and from what I've seen from this demo, this is the best one yet. Do the controls bite? Yeah, a bit. Maybe if they get enough feedback, they'll patch in the ability to rebind the movement. I'd much rather have A and D being sidestep as well.
Although the news that controllers are enabled might make me take another look. Was actually wondering about that, as I thought the type of game it was would work better with a controller then Mouse and Keyboard.

It's a trend I've seen a few times lately, especially here on the Steam Forums. Completely baseless and childish. If peeps can't accept that other people have different opinions, then they have no business being on the internet. Because everyone has their own opinion on everything, and you'll run into it wherever you go.

I agree somewhat, but I'm actually on the opposite side of the table, I keep seeing people who like the game getting offended and trolling people who don't. Then people who don't get annoyed and say mean things and nothing constructive gets done.

Well, the thing is, and this is what I've noticed from browsing the Steam forums more lately, is that nearly every game forum I've looked at, you'll find people who refuse say their piece and LEAVE. Yeah, you hate the game. MOVE ON. But no. They stay, and try to convince the people who actually enjoy the game that they should HATE IT TOO.
Which is why the people who like the game end up 'trolling' the haters. Because they won't let it go. Come on, does this forum really need 11 or so topics on the first page of people hating on the game? No, it does not. One would suffice, two at the most.
To the people who already decided they hate the game based on some design choices Obsidian made and off the demo: We get it, you don't like the game. Move on please.
bushwhacker2k
06-10-2011, 12:07 AM
I think the idea is that they want to be heard, they want Obsidian to understand why they really didn't like what was done and why and how it could be done better. Maybe it's an unlikely hope, but it's not entirely baseless.

Ok, I just spent a few hours playing the demo and this is going on my list. I love it. Played it on my pc with the controller because yes, mouse and keyboard don't work well. I have never played the Dungeon Siege games before so I don't have the old ones to judge from but I love modern graphics anyway. I did see a couple of flaws but they weren't game breaking to me. And no I don't work for whoever created the game, was it Obsidian. I'm an engineer and an author who likes to game in my free time.

I liked the game. Is not the best game of it's generation and I don't like the interface too much, but nothing terrible. I haven't preordered yet so I'm not really recommending it, but the demo is not as bad. The reason I haven't preordered is because I want to know a little more about the multiplayer.
I don't have problems with the mouse and kb interface. The only thing that really I don't like is that you can't click an object, must get near and use E.
Zapix.

No, it's not Halo, it's not Gears of War, it's not Killzone, it's not Mass Effect, it's not Fallout, it's not The Witcher, or any GOTY title, but that doesn't make it a bad game. The demo was enjoyable. All the people bashing it remind me movie critics that will bash a completely decent movie just because it didn't have some all star cast and the meaning of life included in it. Then again, PC gamers are the most vicious of type of gamers... Rabid, angry, and quick to throat stab anyone who mentions a controller (or conform to their beliefs in general).
There are 2 points to the game I don't like though...
1 - Developed by Obsidian. My only previous history with Obsidian happens to be Fallout New Vegas... Which was loaded up the you know what with game breaking glitches of all kinds...
2 - Published by SquareEnix. I have a personal dislike for SquareEnix. That's all. A very personal dislike. /stare...
Overlooking those two things, I found the demo to convince me to want the game. Downloaded the demo on the 360 to compare graphics, and maybe consider the 360 version to play online... Sadly, there was NO comparison, because the 360 version looked like washed out last generation crap in comparison to the PC version. So yeah, PC version (with my 360 controller so the haters can hate me!). Picking it up on Steam instead of a physical version from amazon so I can get the first 2 games included. Good deal

just for the record, developers have stated that the console demo was released with a bug that put all the textures into low res. thats not the case in the full game.
however im not taking the chance, and getting the pc version and playing with a controller like you.

Its common knowledge from the leaked pc version that playing this game with a k/m is almost impossible. If you can't convince yourself to use a 360 controller on a pc game, seriously I would suggest you avoid this game (or at least until a patch is rendered). Just saying.

I'm a sucker for top-down RPG's like this, and normally I prefer the mouse/keyboard, but only if the camera is fixed (Diablo 2, Titan Quest, Torchlight, etc). The moment I come across a game where camera control is not only a feature, but a requirement, I tend to gravitate towards the 360 controller. I can't explain why, but when I have to mess with the camera, I prefer the ease of the sticks to the mouse.
That's my excuse, at any rate.
Played the PC demo with the 360 controller, it looks and plays beautifully. I'm looking forward to it. :)

I was really excited to see a Dungeon Siege sequel but then found out Obsidian was making it and knew they would screw it up. :/ Sure enough they managed to screw it up. Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 were a lot better games then this and they are both nearly a decade old. Dungeon Siege 3 actually manages to be a step backwards on a 10 year old game. That's pretty bad. :\

One hour in, and so far I'm enjoying it. I dabbled in DS1 and 2, but they never really grabbed me, so I for one am glad for the changes.
It ain't perfect - it pulls the same narrative crap Dragon Age 2 did at the beginning, where the tutorial is followed up with "Then there was a long, perilous journey that we're just going to show you some drawings of" instead of actually, y'know, letting me play the long, perilous journey. There's no formal explanation of the stats (some are obvious - stamina, armor, etc. - while others just make me go  ). And while they tend to pass out Save Points like candy at Halloween, I'm a little perplexed as to how a game can come out on PC nowadays without some kind of autosave or quicksave features.
But really, all I was hoping for was an entertaining hack-n-slash lootfest, and so far that's exactly what it is.

QFT. I've been a PC gamer since I was 5, around the time of floppy disk games like doom, wolfenstein 3d, jazz jackrabbit, commander keen etc. I think that bringing the xbox 360 controller to pc was a great move IMO. Since consoles are becoming more and more like full fledged pc's anyway, I do not see the harm in innovation for the sake of innovation. As "old-school" as I am, I always embrace the newest emergence of gaming, just like I did when Sega Genesis' 16 bit came out, I bought it and had just as much fun as I did with my Atari 2600 and my NES.
Did I throw the old systems out for the new? No, I had all that and more to have fun with.
Arguments about the 360 controller are similar to the arguments that people born / who grew up in the 1920s and 1930s had with rock music... It's going to be a part of gaming forever, so why fight it?
Now if I could only get these folks to stop bashing games for lack of co-op... I mean really, if games were meant to be co-op, we'd have had doubles-Pong... I guess this is a sign of change too...

The controller is a great device.
It's high time that people stop associating the controller with the console. Yup, my PC has a controller connected to it. So what. My PC, with its two GTX 480's, running at 2560x1440, utterly destroys the consoles.
And by the way, force feedback, when it's implemented correctly, can make a huge difference in games.

As much as people really hate to admit it, There are just some games that even tho they're intended for the PC were only ON the PC still do a lot better with a controller. One game that I can think of where this applies is the original Descent. that game had more controls then people had fingers and even right up until Descent 3, the control scheme for the game never really changed much.
DS3 has been optimized to use a controller from the start. some people just don't like that idea. Me personally I have no issues with it. Sure there are some things I would like to see different like an auto loot function, because sometimes even your companions miss stuff if it's scattered all over the place and even with the controller having to press a button to pick up something is rather annoying when running over an items would work just as well.
I know myself I hope that when they release the remap patch for the game, I hope that they extend it to the controller as well. Sure the defaults work nicely but there are a few things that I would switch around. i.e. swap Change stance and block/doge

I absolutely loved Descent. I was an avid Descent 3 multiplayer with my Logitech Wingman Extreme controller. This was a full motion controller WAY before nintendo Wii, and for the PC no less... I still have my original copy of descent 3, both discs, in perfect condition. Too bad it runs too fast on my modern gaming rig...

I'm loving the game as well. I'm glad there are others because it seems most people are just hating on it. Sure, it's a console port, but it's a good console port. About six hours in, running errands in Stonebridge. Still enjoying it, and once you get to Stonebridge the game starts showing a pretty great sense of humor. The automaton and goblin dialogue is very funny, and they're not afraid to throw some unabashed silliness in here and there (Baron Barrenbaron :p ).

Brofist for mentioning Dark Alliance. I never played the first two DS games and I was looking for a game similar to Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath, and this is it, although I wish it was a little "deeper". In CoN I was swimming in loot after each quest, but in DS3 I'm lucky to find ten pieces of loot (most of which I can't even equip as the warrior). On top of that, equipment doesn't change your physical appearance which kills the atmosphere for me.
That said, it's still pretty fun. I'm about 2 hours in and despite the poor optimization I am having a good time. The mouse controls were absolutely horrid (the WORST controls I've ever seen), but I plugged in my PS3 controller emulating a 360 pad via Motioninjoy and it's acceptable. I wish I could map controls.

I'm relatively new to PC gaming (console gamer converted) and I was a little surprised to learn this as well. If I would have known games on the PC used controllers so prominently I probably wouldn't have waited so long to switch to PC gaming. Don't get me wrong though, I still love mouse and keyboard for most...but the occasional controller based game is nice.

Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 were a lot better games then this and they are both nearly a decade old. Dungeon Siege 3 actually manages to be a step backwards on a 10 year old game. That's pretty bad. :\
You know what's really funny? This is not the first dungeon siege game to go "consolified" and totally branch off from the original universe. This is also not the first Dungeon Siege game to be released since 1 and 2... Check out Dungeon Siege Throne of Agony. This game has the same style co-op, almost the same style combat system. This franchise has moved toward this "pickup and go" style of gameplay since it's original inception. For you all to claim that Obsidian "screwed it up", you are not really DS fans at all. Just folks who picked up the first two copies from the steam pre-order and were upset when the third followed a different method.
DS:ToA was really fun. And while DS3 isn't groundbreaking, they certainly didn't obliterate the franchise. And I have to add that, this game is more fun than DS:ToA, especially on Hardcore.

You realise it went consolified because it went on a console? As much as I'd like to have tried it in the past I wasnt prepared to buy a console just to give it a go, I did that for timesplitters years ago, not doing that again.
Plus the fact players didnt literally play that doesnt make them less of a DS fan, I personally read through the game even though I couldnt get it, it wasnt that great sounding a game.
The issue with most people disliking Obsidian though is well, down to their reputation of ruining games, examples as I stated in another thread being Kotor 2, NWN2, and FO:NV, all broken, unfinished or just plain bad. As I also stated in a previous thread I dont mind this game actually due to feeling familar to Dark Alliance, however you can easily see the problem people face.
Many of the older vet players who liked the originals expected the originals, and some didnt research the game enough to know it was not going to be like the previous games, where you are an unknown protagonist, this game clearly defines you are X, Y or Z. The main issue with the games industry these days is it tries to fit every console, and doesnt go that extra mile to create a game we can enjoy for months and replay, take the new COD series, it just releases a new game every 6 months to 1 year and doesnt really settle down, destroys multiplayer, and never has a set "place" for communities. Always looking for the next moneymaker, rather than making something that is replayable, doesnt help that the prices are being hiked up for products we can play for less game time either, but I digress.
Games will NEVER live up to fan expectations, as I will see on a large scale when TOR is released.

Come now, that's not a nice generalization to make.

Hah, most wow players dont even move from the game, believe me I've tried, they either utterly refuse to try anything different, or play something for a week, or say they quit and go back in a week or so.
Though yeah the kid whiners of that game destroyed that game, the worst ones are the ones that cant take a challenge, so make games too easy.

It's a brilliant game, I am really enjoying it. It doesn't bother me one bit if someone hates it, I don't care about how much an internet stranger enjoys a game or not, I don't understand why people feel the need to come to a forum just say how much they hate something, it's a bit of a waste of time.

Just about to assault Jeyne's stronghold, so I assume I'm nearing the end. It's still holding up well for me.
Combat with Lucas is a blast. I've customized him to be a bit more rogue-ish (Crit chance, lots of get-in-get-out quick attacks, stuns/knockdowns), and the fast paced battles that result are super fun. And the best thing is, every battle is potentially lethal if you're careless. There's no God skill to lay waste to everything (cough FROZEN ORB cough), and the focus system means you can't spam mana potions to keep throwing out your specials.
There is one technique I've learned that's really fun. It's a risky move, but when it pays off it's beautiful. Pump all your customization points into giving Lucas's healing spell the Life Leech bonus, and his Blade Dash the 10%-per-rank Crit Chance. Then, when you're near death, fire up the healing spell and Blade Dash into a crowd of enemies. Bad guys go flying everywhere, the screen fills up with CRITICAL HIT CRITICAL HIT CRITICAL HIT and lots of blue numbers, and you come out the other side with half your health bar back, putting you right back into the fight. :)

dont feed the troll. he wins if you get mad.
I'm glad you enjoyed the game. Good for you, man.
I agree with you, why do people get upset when someone likes a game they are bashing. I've played the other DS's before this one and I like them a lot, but I like this one too. At first it was frustrating trying to use the mouse/keybrd (I'm a lefty and don't use the WASD keys, I prefer the arrows..). Then I figured out it can use the xbox controller and after that it was a lot of fun. Like others mentioned the graphics are beautiful and I think the effects and story line is great too. And before I get bashed for sucking up to MS or anything, I would still prefer to use the mouse/keybrd for a shooter or rpg. I think I will love this even better once the keyboard mapping patch comes out. Oh, and let's face it, the xbox controller is awesome for driving games and the like, no matter what the haters spew!

Oh, and to all the whiners saying they should note whether something is a console port, well get ready. Eventually they all will be, then what will you play? Let's face it, consoles drive the video gaming business. Now don't get me wrong, I don't even play consoles and love my PC (I do only PC gaming and this system is sweet and set up for it). I'm just looking at things realistically. No longer do we steer the market, it's the consoles that have the real numbers these days. I prefer the PC because I have control over how much fine tuning I am able to do for a game (leastways that was the case in the past, nowadays all the options are simplified since the consoles tend to be locked to specific video and audio settings, as opposed to the PC glory days when you could adjust just about anything in game settings). In past days most of the major players would develop games for the PC first then port them to the consoles. I think that era has ended, so get used to more of these ports. That doesn't mean they should be horrible games, though. Maybe as long as we support this platform and provide useful feedback then maybe we can see positive results down the road.

Ok. 1- shut up about that crappy 360 controller. What, are you an M$ employee or something?
2- The game IS dead. Obsidian killed it before it was released.
3- If you like the controller so much then get the damned 360 version and leave us pc people alone.
Us PC people have been using controllers for years before the Xbox 360 or PS3 where around but if you were a real pc gamer you would already know that. No go play with your console and leave us pc gamers to use what every controller we choose!

for all these 'pc people' i read : children and adolescents who think theyre elite because their parents bought them an expensive toy.
but they arent true 'pc people' because theyd know the roots of pc gaming if they were.

Then you should know that early PCs used controllers and joysticks to emulate arcade games and the arcade experience. Once proper, more complex PC-exclusive games began to be made, the controller was no longer useful for anything except flight sims and certain arcade-style games (which is still the case today). Don't you remember keyboard overlays?
