High Scores?

I've seen the posts about people cheating .. but this isn't about that. I'm just looking for some sound strategy for getting a decent score. The instructions that game with the game aren't very helpful. The multiplier seems to be there for no real scoring purpose half the time, and it seems like I play roughly the same game and do about as well two different times .. but get a crap score one time, and a really great one the other. Is it better to use Shatter Storm after you've built a multiplier? Or does it not matter?

Any input would be helpful.

Your multiplier goes up when you collect shards and resets at the end of every level or when a brick falls past the line where you lose balls. You have to balance collecting shards as you destroy blocks, to make sure you don't destroy most of the level with a low multiplier. Also why you should make liberal use of your shield, to destroy blocks rather then letting them fall past you, to avoid resetting your current multi.
