Number of enemies fixed?

Hi all,

bought the game on sale a while back, haven't played it that much then. Reinstalled it a few days ago, and I'm loving it :D

Anyway, after a few nights being scared and surrounded, I was wondering is the number of enemies fixed, or does the game spawn more of them if I wait around for too long?

I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure the number of enemies is fixed. The reason why I believe this is that each enemy 'spawn' creates a certain number of enemies in the same spots triggered by the same thing.
