That's pretty shortsighted cut-off-your-nose to spite your face thinking. Steam is the #1 digital distribution platform by far. By pulling games from it, EA is directly cutting off a percentage of their sales. They may be hoping that those people will go and buy it off of Origin, but most people don't even know what that is. From what i've seen in postings and around the net, an origin exclusive will fragment their sales. Something like this:
x% of the former steam sales will be gone. These people won't buy it from Origin. This group is made up of the following people: Steam fans who only purchase through steam; The people who use steam and don't want to mess with having multiple digital download sites - they may pass on the game or pick it up via retail; Impulsive sales - the folks who see the game on steam and weren't planning on buying it, but decide what the heck; Hat driven sales - the TF2 hat addicts that purchase games to get hat add-ons; Steam event sales - all the sales driven by the big steam summer and winter sales events; the opportunistic pirates who would buy through steam but will use this as an excuse to justify (to themselves) pirating the game.
y% of the former steam sales will buy it from Origin. Some are the people who don't mind using multiple digital sites and view competition as good; Some are people who only use digital distribution and want the game no matter where it comes from.
The big question is how big are x and y?

Most people will buy the game DD from wherever they can get it. If it's an EA exclusive they will buy from EA. They don't care. Do you really think the majority of BF fans are going to forego buying BF3 just because it's not available for DD anywhere but EA?
Never forget we on any forums are only 1-3 percent minority of all users. Most won't give a damn. EA will loose some sales because some people only buy from Steam. That's EA's problem though not ours.

There are a good chunk of users that are non-tech savvy but weary of using credit cards online that build relationships with chosen retailers. Forcing them to go to a DD they do not recognize will lose you some sales.
I do have to say, most of my Steam buys are impulse buys that I don't make from other retailers. It's also ♥♥♥♥ that Direct2Drive will continue selling these games with Origin, bt Steam wont.

Isn't steam still like 70% of the PC games sales market?
30% of games are bought from places that aren't steam that means?
So if your game isn't available on steam you may only be around for 30% of the people who are buying games not counting the fans looking for that title very specifically.
Considering the main goal of making a game for a company like that is to sell the damned thing I can see why limiting yourself to about 30% of the market would be a somewhat stupid move for EA even if that 30% has a somewhat higher profit margin.
(yeah the main goal for a certain group can often be making a really cool fun to play game but that a developer thing not a publisher thing and EA is more of a publisher so they want to sell the damned things and not improve the state of PC gaming itself using quality products.)
