So how do you switch PhysX off? I looked at BaseEngine.ini and i found 3 places where there reads physX... ...one says physX level is zero and two others says 8 and 64... ...do i have to change those to zero too?

i did and that helped. the game looks a bit worse, but it was unplayable with PhysX on with fps dropping to 10.
i was shocked to discover that the game is restricted to 30 fps.

Why do developers use PhysX when everyone knows it more broken than a Ming Vase dropped at 1000 feet?

The PhysX effects in this game are pretty cool, though. Ground shatters with hobby horse hits, volumetric smoke for the pepper gun, interactive liquids like slime and countless other atmosphere related effects. I'm glad they included these options for the people who can use them, plus this game will probably be played years from now just like the original, so a little bit of visual future-proofing won't hurt.

Guys... PhysX set to low essentially is PhysX off.
There is no real way to turn PhysX fully off since the game uses PhysX for all physics and if you want that off, you'll basically be playing a game that doesn't do anything.

all that you've said is plain and simple not true. please do not misguide people.

I'm playing them on Medium and it looks brillant.
I got the Hobby Horse upgraded to max and it's a beast!

Arkham Asylum? DC Universe? Didn't know they were broken.

How do you know it's not true?
If you have NVIDIA cards, go into the control panel and under 3D Settings menu, put PhysX Indicator to on.
Then, when it's on Low, it always uses CPU PhysX. When you put it medium or high in-game, it uses GPU PhysX.

thats not exactly being completely off is it?
turning it to low uses the cpu but its still on, its just using a different form of calculation.
turning it off completely isnt out of the question. other games can, including the likes of arkham, mafia 2 etc.

I'd be very surprised if you could actually completely disable PhysX even in the ini. You'd be amazed how many parts of the game will rely on the physics engine to function. Basically when you set it to low, it'll turn off all the advanced effects and act similar to any other CPU physics engine like Havok, so there's no need to dig into the ini and try to disable it completely.
In any case, it's not PhysX that's broken, but the game's implementation of it definitely needs work. I've noticed that the PhysX effects will persistently lower your framerate throughout a level. So even though I have a card perfectly capable of running the game at 40-60 fps and is PhysX capable, after spreading some of the PhysX goo and particles around, my framerate will drop to 15-20 and stay there for the entire rest of the level. The game just never seems to clean up after itself. At least it doesn't crash constantly with PhysX turned on like Mirror's Edge did when it first came out.

you contradict yourself. low does not equal off. if you bothered to read the first two posts of the topic you'd understand how to turn it completely off.
i have an ATI card and therefore even with physx on low it was stuttering like mad. after disabling it the game runs fine

I set physx to low, after restarting the game the physx option in no longer available in the menu. (using an Amd 4890 card)

No. These games always use Physx, you can only control the amount of additional effects. How do you think the vehicle simulation would work in Mafia 2 without a physics engine?

PhysX is outdated. Last I knew it was free which is why developers use it. Cheap bastards.

As a poster replied, there is no true way of turning it completely off. Going into the ini file and setting it to the lowest value is the same as setting PhysX to LOW, which means only CPU PhysX.
It's absurd to set it completely off since otherwise, there would be no physics calculations at all. Every single game uses physics and this game is no exception, although it uses PhysX as its API, same as Havok.
You saying there's a difference is improbable, since PhysX on Low is the same amount of particles as the console versions.

Developers use it because they can do things not possible with other physics engines. That and it's built into Unreal Engine 3 so it doesn't require any additional work to integrate.

It really is strange that it's frame limited like that...mine runs at a steady 30fps if I turn Phys-x to low. When I put Phys-x to high it was dropping to 10fps in combat.

you can change minimum, maximum frame rate from engine.ini. just set both for 0. and smooth frame is false. then you will be OK.

again, i'm just describing what happened in my game. changing physx to low didn't help much, setting all physx lines to 0 in the ini helped.

ah, thanx! much better now

If your on an ATI card, just throw PhysX to low and restart the game, the next time you log on it won't see it in the video settings.
As for completely shutting it off, which shouldn't be such a main issue you would have to edit the engine.ini file settings.
