Today was payday, and this game comes out on Steam the same day, awesome!

I'm poking around the features and don't see any mention of the original game's remake. Find out that you can only get that through, EA's Origin. Well whatever.

Hop over to Origin and see no mention of the original game there either.

Google google google, I have to get the complete version off origin for ten extra dollars, fine.

This has been discontinued.

...Why?

Honestly where's the logic?

The product comes out on Steam the same day you discontinue a bargaining chip to download off or Origin instead?

Aren't They making less money and confusing people who also wanted the original game?

Why wouldn't they advertise/sell the remake and/or make it available separately?

I think a lot of people would have enjoyed the original game just as a remake. People hesitant to get the sequel would have a cheap way to get into the series, and the original was an excellent game.

So, why?

It was an Origin Limited Time Exclusive only.

After June 17th, the Complete Collection is no longer sold via Origin.

I imagine it will reappear at some point, either on Origin or GOG. It's not a remake, it's just the old game exactly as it was with widescreen support. It was "HD" to begin with.

There's only two places where you can get the original now, on Ebay and you can guess the other place. The game should have been on gog.com or Steam years ago, there's absolutely no compatibility errors with it. Hopefully they wise up and offer the remastered edition on Steam.

Don't forget Amazon sell it too!

Yeah, I forgot about that. The console versions have the original as well, so if you can play it at a 4:3 screen size then that's an option as well. The PC version of the original goes for $40 used, though.

Yeah it's pretty expensive :(

I've had the original Alice since it came out, played it many times. Worked fine in Win7x64. God I miss the good old days. No DRM, no bloatware, whole game is installs in 600MB.

The supported resolutions on the original Alice were lacking, but it was still a classic. Ok, that first gnome village was sucky, but everything after that was great.

Alice: But I don't want to go among mad people.
Cheshire Cat: Oh, you can't help that. Most everyone's mad here.

Kind of fits. . .

lol, there's tons of mad people on Amazon and Ebay.
There's tons of used games going to from $40 - $100. Totally perpostrious prices.

I saw a copy of Silent Hill 2 for $399.99 one time.
jeez. But it was signed by a dev, but still...

You used to be able to get just the discs for quite cheap. It seems that with Madness Returns coming out soon prices have risen though.

Wait a while and they will go back down, or by that time the original game might be offered on its own on GOG or elsewhere.

So no original (first) game for retails?

Lol. Someone said they're selling the game at the Wal Mart by them for $5, which is what it cost me to buy the second time I bought it, in one of those EA Classics cd cases.

Clicking on it simply exits the game, and nothing happens. :(

Pretty much the same situation here. Long before the sequel was announced I bought the original at a few quid. It's hidden in a shed somewhere.

It seems strange EA would do it this way as people are willing to pay a fair price for the first game. With it only available second hand not only is it pricing people out but EA wouldn't get any money from it. They'll probably sell it separately for the PC as well but until then it's easily pirateable with widescreen able to be enabled (according to the 'net).

Anyone who wants to play it can get it easily so I don't why EA didn't consider that and sell it to everyone. The only people who could access the original torrent are console owners and they get it automatically.

It's crazy PC users are treated differently. I know why they did it though. Console owners have to buy new copies to get it. Second hand would pay extra so EA gets $$. PC owners can't trade in the game so they have to buy new anyway so they can ♥♥♥♥ off.

I to was hoping that we also get Alice 1 HD to not that it a big deal I to have original game to but I perf to have build in to steam and being that it using Unreal engine it should play better then old quake engine.
How ever the original game can be made to work with widescreen see this page http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/index.php/American_McGee%27s_Alice/

Original is 800 points on Xbox LIVE or free with the 360 version of A:MR. It's not PC version, and really, it's the original would probably benefit from being on the console as getting anything old to work on newer versions of windows will most likely be a pain. Anyway, just figured I'd put that option on there. I'm sure the PS3 has something similar. I'm probably going to wait until the "Complete" comes to Steam. As it is, I have too many games and not enough time to play them all.

Since you can register the game with Origin, if you uninstall the Steam version and re-download the Origin version will you get Alice 1?

Since you can register the game with Origin, if you uninstall the Steam version and re-download the Origin version will you get Alice 1?No, it was a limited time offer and only available on Origin but even Origin is not selling it any more. They are selling the same version as Steam and everyplace else now. Just the new game.

Just spent the last week playing through the original. It runs flawlessly, save for some occasional screen-tearing with fast turns, which is to be expected. Those textures were never meant to run at 1900x1200.

It ran in 1620x1200, pretty much the same thing. Remember on the PC we have had "HD" games for like 15 years.

It's not a remake it's more like a remaster. They change a little the color pallet and this is the only difference from the original.

And I bet that they will put the game to sell on GoG or Origin very soon.

Hey I've got a great idea, let's have an argument over it.

My point being, when the game came out in 2000, and we were most of us running Windows 98, 1900x1200 isn't a resolution that most programmers took into account.

1200 was rare back then but something like 1024 certain was not, and that's a hell of a lot higher res than the "HD" consoles use today.

In any event I was just trying to say HD is a pointless marketing term. PC gamers using it to describe anything is heartbreaking. Alice does not need an "HD" remake because it was "HD" on day one, and much more "HD" than the supposed "HD" consoles we have today.

I never said "HD." I don't think I ever saw EA say "HD." They said Remastered. Which considering at the very least they added native widescreen and gamepad support, it qualifies.

Moreover, it's effortless to install and launch.

Does anyone know if the audio engine was updated on the Alice remaster or do we need to install something ALchemy so we can have surround sound in Windows 7 using Sound Blaster cards?
