View Full Version : Yeah, this PhysX stuff is kind of BS.

So my system is pretty decent.
i5-760, 580GTX, 4GB RAM.
Game runs perfect except when all the particle effects go off (I have it on high). Goes from 60 to 45s.I tried switching the physics from the CPU to the GPU and it's mostly the same. I do have a spare 460GTX so I decided to install it as a dedicated physX card. I set it up in the control panel... Runs exactly the same. If not a little worse. Any have experience with this? What could I be doing wrong?

You should check the guide I posted. I ran into the same problem, and its because the game has an FPS limiter applied for dramatic effect. If you raise the FPS limit to about 40-45, the game will run a lot better when under heavy physx effects, while still maintaining the cinematic quality desired by the developers.

This will limit my frame-rate to 40-45. I really don't want to give up 60 FPS.

You shouldn't be able to run it at 60fps by default anyway...
The game was originally capped at 30fps

Just turn off the FPS smoothing completely. The only reason it's even there is to limit the console versions of games to 30 fps since they can't handle 60 for a lot of games.

If you force CPU physx through the nvidia control panel you will see the exact same drops as with GPU physx enabled.

you can change cap from baseengine, default engine, another engine.ini in your alice save folder. change all of them. like smooth frame rate is false, minimum frame rate, maximum frame rate are all 0. then you will see some crazy frame rate.

Is this pc-fanboyism? PLENTY of console games run at 60fps. The only time FPS gets dropped is for S3D which outputs @ 24hz

Glad to see someone came to same conclusion as I did.
I run with FPS limited at 41 fps xD
gtx 460, 1080p, PhysX medium... very smooth

Um.. no?
If you actually read the guide I posted, you would see the note that I stuck in there saying "I *PERSONALLY* wanted to keep the cinematic quality, while having a better FPS, so I would *PERSONALLY* recommend something around 41-45.
If you want the game to run at 60+, then put in 60+. Just as a note though, it will make the game look weird.

I have it at 60 fps and the game doesn't look weird at all. I don't know where you get that. Any game I have that is capped at 30 fps, I change to 60 fps with no effects at all. It's just comes down to what you like to play your games at. It comes down to game feel. Some are more sensitive to it than others.

Game is locked to 30FPS and if you are using fraps you would have realized that already.

I didn't say all of them. It's a fact that many console games are limited to 30 fps in order to maintain a constant framerate.

Game can be unlocked from 30 fps. If you would have done your homework, you would have realized that already.
