View Full Version : There is a Big Red Button...
sshotz

...in front of you. You do not know what it does. You find a practically destroyed note next to the button. Picking up the note, you can make out the word "does." You assume that this means that the button does something. However, you don't know exactly what it does.
It could do something extremely drastic. Something that could change humanity. It could be a bad action, such as destroying part of the world. It could be a very good change, like ending world hunger. It could be something very minor. It could just give you a simple cold that can be rested off. The button might give you five dollars. You may have been wrong, maybe this button does nothing.
The big red button is almost taunting you, but at the same time it welcomes you. Power is at a single finger. Is what you feel to do something good, really a good idea? Of course, is it a bad idea either? The point is, this button will do something.
vvvvv(added for people who think whatever happens will happen anyway :p)vvvvv
Out of the corner of you eye, you spot something. It's another note. It's not totally destroyed either. It looks like it's in perfect condition, and even recent. It reads: "To whom it may concern, I have given you the ability to press the button you have encountered. You will be the only one able to press it. No one else will be able to, not even in the future. I will be dead by the time you read the last sentence."
You don't know where you are or how you got there. Where you are at looks to be [insert where reader might suspect a big red button that could do something or nothing might be] and you will find your way out and back to your normal (if you didn't press it, or maybe you did and it did nothing or almost nothing) life.
My question to you and the others around you is:
Would you press the button?

The existence of the button invites the eventuality of it being pressed, the probability of which, it being located on the planet Earth and very potentially within reach of someone else, approaches 1 rather rapidly with the passage of time. If I do not press it now, it will be pressed in the future.
So ya I press it. If it destroys the world, it was an inevitability. If it gives me five bucks, those five bucks are mine and I don't have to share it with anyone.
Thread over.

Alright, let's say you were the only person with the ability to press that button. And no one in the future will ever be able to press it. Would you still do it?

Oh, I did decide one thing!!! :D
If I did press it, I'd close my eyes, turn away, hold my breath and then press it.
I've no idea why, but at least I'm fairly sure I'd do that!
(That's if I did actually decide to press the button which I still couldn't say without seeing its position relative to me?!?)

The last time I pressed a red button it didn't do anything, and I was pretty young, so in my mind, that button could have destroyed the world, or made wonderful things happen. :p
If I saw that note, I'd assume that the person went crazy from not knowing what the button did.

What you do know is that you don't know what will happen. And you can't tell what will happen. The pushing is circumstantial to your position in life and frame of mind at the time.
If you have nothing to lose, push it.
If you have everything to lose, then don't.
