Is it?

So, wouldn't that be "In during daily deal worth it thread"?

Anyway, I'm curious too. Reviews are remarkably scarce.
The last space RTS I liked was the Homeworld series and the main draw there was its story (and its visuals).
The massive battles here look entertaining though.

The two reviews I've seen for this [via Metacritic] were written in 2010 around the time of the game's release. Both reviews said that the game had potential, but was under-developed at the time.

If Blind Mind Studios continues to release new patches and more content, Star Ruler will one day become a great game in the 4X genre. But today it's just a $25 preform.

Star Ruler is (as of this review (9/29/10)) a somewhat fun if incomplete game.

Has the situation changed since these reviews were written? Are there any current reviews around?

I don't play well with others, so what's the single player experience like?

I loved the Ender's Game tactics of Homeworld but hated the resource pumping frenzy of Anacreon. Which one is Star Ruler?

I've found an uptodate demo.

http://games.on.net/file/42111/Star_Ruler_Demo_v1.0.7.4

The full game is at v1.0.8.0, so that linked demo isn't far behind. I've got no idea how old the demo hosted on Steam is.

edit: Or just go with the Steam demo thanks to Firgof's post below.

Mhm. Some reviewers have even added a followup to their review.

The demo on Steam is at v1080; it was just uploaded the other day when 1080 came out.

Well I dont think you can go far wrong for £3.25 : )

And if you really like it, its the sort of game you might play for years.

I say support an Indie dev and just drink one less pint saturday night!

Earlier this week I was looking for a game like this on Steam, so I'm happy with the deal.

A great game for those that enjoy space 4Xs. It is one of the very few games I purchased at full price and I don't regret it.

BTW i just put my money where my mouth is and bought it.

More space games are needed. maybe not RTS ones, but I know many want space combat in the style of X-wing or freelancer, and they just arent coming.

Jumpgate Evolution is looking dated already and its not even out yet for instance : (

X Rebirth should be out by the end of the year, and it should have all that and a lot more if the older X-series is an example of what Egosoft can do. I know that the piloting AI is being reworked from scratch and that was one of the sore points on the X series.

As for space strategy, Sword of the Stars 2 should be out in three months or so. I actually purchased Star Ruler to make the wait more palatable but it turned out to be a lot more than filler. An impressive game once you get the hang of it. The ship creation interface is the best I have ever seen.

Great news, had no idea they were rebooting the X series, thanks for the tip!

Played it a bit, ~1h on 4x speed to get the hang of it.

Looks like its well worth it.
Plenty of gameplay & detail to micromanage.

I mean. £3.75?
That's cheaper than a pint at my local.

Even the 1 hour I've spent mucking around has provided more enjoyment than a pint would for an hour.

Been playing since I got home from work. I love it. It reminds me of the Twilight Imperium board game in a way.

Yeah, it's $5, dude. I say if you play with the game for an hour, it's worth the $$$.

I played it for about 30 minutes; overly complex and not really that entertaining for me, but the developers were very helpful in chat and seem like great people - worth giving them money to show support.

Downloaded the demo but when I start it ( from either desktop or Steam Library ) it just opens the steam store at the Star Ruler page :(

Brilliant game. Easily worth $5 I'd say retail price is quite reasonable now that I've gone through the entire tutorial and got an idea of how the game works. I am really impressed with the UI and general game design and implementation. I read the whole tutorial for interest, but frankly all but a few pieces (like explaining subsystems) were basically self-evident in use by the excellently laid out UI. A 15 minute run through the tutorial covered pretty much every little special case you'd need to know (like ship scale multipliers and blueprinting, and how to tinker automation etc).

I'm going to get off this little laptop and onto a nice big monitor to try some actual play now, but I'm quite pleased I grabbed this one. I may try out the flat view because my only issue so far is I find navigating around with the mouse a bit unwieldy and haven't noticed the 3d space to really be all that utilized (all of the galaxies I'd loaded up so far were basically flat anyways).

Bought this game together with a friend yesterday, we played it the whole night together. It's an really awesome game, it reminds me alot of the game Sins Of A Solar Empire, except that in this one you can customize every part for your ship and have no limit on ships and planets and stars etc.

For this price I'd say it's really worth it and you should buy it.

Really worth 5$, but I'd say it's worth even 20$.

It's not very complex. But it's great that you don't only build and develop your empire, order researches, make war, etc, you can change every ship ingame and create really unique ships designed for your gameplay style.
Very interesting.
I find it great so far.
