From elsewhere:

Also: Without spending too much time on the topic, I sold the SVD because as a new player, I had no 'skills.' 'Skills' is a subject also not covered well on the website - or at all, save perhaps on the forums. 'Skills' (and item bonuses) do affect game performance in ways that would make players cringe if they fully understood them. Thus from my perspective, the SVD may have been a 'quality' weapon, but one wasted in unskilled hands.

...what do you mean "lack of skills"? That's the kind of crap you really shouldn't be worried about until you start playing with higher ranked players.

The only skills worth noting are increased sprint speed and decreased fall damage for Pointmen, increased defense and grenade throwing range for Riflemen, and increased accuracy and draw speed for Snipers. The improvements are for the most part fairly insignificant, and they really don't effect play that much until you're playing with higher levels.

Not only that, but they can take weeks or even months to attain, so they're earned gradually as you play. They shouldn't be something to be worried about right from the start. They're supposed to come by naturally.

I've moved this section of dialogue as I had no intention of hijacking that thread to go this far off-topic. Unfortunately, putting the word 'skills' in quotes did not adequately convey my meaning. So I shall try again here.

We were not talking about the same kind of skills.

Just so I know that in this thread we are talking about the same thing, please explain the in-game benefits of attaining the following 'skills':

Sniping Novice: Shot grouping improved using scope level 1

Sniping Expert: Shot grouping improved using scope level 2

Sniping Master: Shot grouping improved using scope level 3

Semi-related: while we're at it, would you also explain how one increases a defense skill, and what helmet drop increase is?

...so we're talking about AVA's personal in-game skills?

When you scope in with a sniper and look at the right side of the screen, you may notice 18 bars next to it. They fill up when you run while zoomed in, and empty when you're completely still or sitting. That's the accuracy bar. How many bars is filled tells you how inaccurate the next bullet can be from the center of the screen. 1 bar isn't much, you might miss a really long shot, 2 bars is a bit, you could miss a headshot in mid-range, 3 bars is about the same. 4 bars is good enough to hit accurately in close range. 6+ bars is just horrible, only to be used when panicking.

Now, the Sniping skills.
You get the Novice immediately, IIRC. I could be wrong, can't honestly remember.
Anyway.
Without the Master skill, most of the snipers you use will have partially filled accuracy bar, unless crouching.

So to say, with Novice and TPG, the bar is around 1-2 bars.
With Expert and TPG, it will be 1 or .5 bars.
With Master and TPG it is perfect.
Talking about standing accuracy.

Some mods can help with getting better accuracy. Probably Accuracy+ mods, or Stablity+ mods. Stability+ mods should only help with moveshot accuracy tho.

tl;dr : they increase sniping accuracy from 98% perfect to 100% perfect.

semi-related: Riflemen have a class skill which increases their armor a bit. Enough to make their TPG tanking rate from 1% to 2% I believe, compared to Pointmen and Snipers who have 1%. Difference is more noticeable at comparing bullets of assault rifles and SMGs to kill between the classes, but I don't know any statistics about that.

You can also increase your armor defense by buying a Backpack item in the Shop. Look for the tabs. Backpacks are divided to A, B, C and D slot. D slot is useless.
Also, Ghostgear Kit increases Pointmen's defense about the same as does Riflemen's defense skill increase.

Helmet drop increase (or decrease) is related to how many shots it takes to drop RM or PM helmet. Some helmets tank only one or two bullets and then drop. That could mean saving your life one or two times.
Some helmets tank more. Increasing the skill (by either skill or backpack items) naturally decreases your opponent's chance of dropping your helmet.
The droprate is a bit random, but the skills do help.
Provided you don't die from the 1st or 2nd bullet anyway.

AVA's in-game skills can be attained by a few ways: play hours (5, 15 and 40 to the max, I think), kills (1250 and 2500 for primaries I think, 10-30 with grenades [riflemen], 50 and 200 for sniper, 1 to 3 for Pointmen), sprint time (1h) headshots and the stuff. I don't remember all of them.
