I can't get Umbra to work, or how to do it

I got the Umbra sword last night and some armor from the warrior, I have the spell for the sword selected and I have casted it before and after using the sword but it just says "you have not hit a target" or some such crap.

I have tried it on Humans (bad guys only), all sorts of beasts dead and undead of all sorts and I still don't a soul gem with a soul in it.

there must be some trick but I have no idea what it is, the one in Oblivion you just used it and BAM!! it worked.

is it a level thing? cause I'm like level 10

BTW, this game with the Graphics and Sound Mod...in Nvidia 3D is AWESOME!! the combat is lame but the game itself is better than Oblivion in more then a few ways!

Try casting it right after killing an enemy, with an empty soul gem in your inventory.

OK I'll try again, I've done this like 10 times but maybe I'm just taking too long.

I do have all kinds of Soul Gems in my Inv. greater, petty, lesser, and some big purple crystal looking thing.

ok, ya gotta hit em with the spell just before ya kill them, then it works.
