I know I have a pretty weak laptop (1.3 GHz core 2 duo, intel 4500mhd CPU) but this game shouldn't really be all that demanding, right?
Played the first few levels normal mode and it framerates were fine - 35-45 fps.
However the "test" level brings it down to 7-8fps. Resolution has no effect - 640x360 performs identically to 1920x1080, so it must be processor bottlenecking. The minimum requirements are "2GHz CPU" but that's for a single core, right? Or does this game not take advantage of dual cores?
Anyway, are later normal levels going to be as bad as the test level?

That level runs fine for me, it's just the Portal background that's causing you to lag.

So the question is, do any normal levels have such a laggy background as well? Will I hit that kind of wall if I keep playing?
on my intel gma 4500 mhd 32MB, portal test is 7 fps while the game up to the middle of descent ranges from 40 fps to 90 fps.
I then went and set the ForceFixedFunction=yes option and got a higher fps in the portal level.
ForceFixedFunction details are in the other thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1836766)

It worked, thanks! Now the Test level is 15-17fps, and the normal levels are much smoother. Transition was almost 100% at rock solid 60 fps!
I put "ForceFixedFunction = yes" in my beat.cfg file, but now the lighting in <Test> and some cutscenes are screwed up.
