This is a great game/simulator and I absolutely love it, it's probably my favorite game I own. The only problem I have is that there is no sound or music. I understand that you can just open up Winamp or something and listen from that, but I find that rather annoying.

Music and sounds should not be hard to add at all, there is a lot of free music here (http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=mediatype:audio%20AND%20collectio n:opensource_audio%20AND%20/metadata/subject:%22Ambient%22) that can be used commercially as long as credit is given, and menu sounds can be created in fruity loops demo.

Anyway please just consider add music/sound, other than that, great program. :)

I expect to release a free update in the distant future that will add audio support to Universe Sandbox.

I listen to Moondog while playing universe sandbox. It fits in so well that I forget it's not the official soundtrack to the game.

You say that like that means something. So what if there is no sound in space? This is a game, not reality. No sound, not even music, is friggin' BORING! Add some sound. Even some click noises or something would be welcomed.

We're working on a major overhaul and update of Universe Sandbox that we'll be releasing sometime next year. Sound is on the list for this update.

I see 4 types of sound to be added to Universe Sandbox:

- UI sounds (button clicks)
- Sounds attached to objects
- Hollywood style sounds for collisions, etc.
- Background ambiance

Although some of these may be released in minor updates after the major 2012 update is released.

In the meantime, put on some of your favorite music and then play. :)

It's not a game...

Add a camera shake effect and anamorphic lens flares (http://assets.videocopilot.net/assets/public/images/vc_cool/prenet/user_presets/1113/133/large.jpg), and call it Michael Bay Mode :)

It should have some sort of (relaxing) BGM.

- just got the game and noticed the missing sound
- started winamp and selected Mike Oldfield's Songs of Distant Earth
- issue fixed in a (IMO) perfect way :)
- alternatively use Solar Fields, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Loscil ...
- great too, if a little more distracting, Symphony of Science (on Bandcamp)

The Bioshock soundtrack is surprisingly fitting.

Looks more like a lens flare from the recent Star Trek movie by JJ Abrams (or his more recent Super 8).

Either way... I hear "more lens flare". Got it. :)

Well, I know some decent space music.

MrVoletron made some pretty decent space related music.

There's a sample on his youtube.

Pretty decent stuff, made with EVE in mind but space music is space music. Album is only 5 bucks too.

This, and any chance of a cleaner/simplified UI?

Cleaner and simplified user interface?

Yes... that's the plan.

(and wow... is that a hard, but fun problem to work on)

Great game otherwise once you get passed it, also nice to see a dev taking notes from the community.

Thanks.

We really value feedback, good or bad. After you've worked on something for so long you get so close to it that you lose your objectivity. So how else but from user feedback do you know what really works and what doesn't? :)

Sad but true. Sound itself cannot travel through space due to the vaccuum.

That's what the fictional "Hollywood Audio Mode*" will be for.

* a feature that may or may not make it into the major 2012 release.

I want to say first that I am fine with the game having no sound. I put on the radio and listen to whatever I want and I don't miss anything game-wise.

However if you are seriously considering adding some sound and are still debating on what to use, why not use those new space sounds that NASA has been recording?

It's some crazy science but to dumb it down NASA has been capturing electromagnetic pulses that are emitted from object through out the universe; mostly "local" objects. They use the vibrations caused by these particles to record the planet's "sound"

It would be interesting to implement these sounds into the game. They could be planet specific, (each planet having it's own unique sound as recorded by NASA. And as you zomed in on that planet you could hear it better.) Or it could just be a general back round noise always playing no matter what planet you are near.

Just a thought to mull over. Google it for better information on how they capture these sounds from space.

Holy smoke, I believe the fellow who posted about lens flare was being sarcastic. I sure hope so...

Please, please please, NO lens flare! I hope it's not too late to abort a lens flare effect before it gets started. Worst visual artefact ever. Just ultra-lame. You read the JJ Abrams interviews on the topic of Star Trek being too shiny, and it's clear he's embarrassed by the lens flare effect. I'm embarrassed by it 1,000 times more.

Yes. You will be able to turn sound off.

Same with lens flares, you'll be able to turn them off.
