FIXED! See solution below if sp3 isn't available to you.
So I bought this game a while ago, where it used to work fine. Now it doesn't start from the steam library and running it directly from the .exe gives a 'missing xlive.dll' message.
It's been suggested that I download the games for windows client, but that only gives me an error saying I need service pack 3. (i'm running xp sp2)
Is there a way to download games for windows without a new service pack? Other workarounds?
EDIT: Fixed! Solution for others: I Went into the steam folder for gta4 and located the 'installers' folder, here there is gfwlivesetup.exe - double click and install games for windows. Then I went to the GTAIV folder. Right clicked LaunchGTAIV.exe and went to properties > compatibility. Check 'run this program in compatibility mode' and select windows 2000.
