Why is Steam downloading something like 4gb of game?
Is it an update? It started automatically.
I supposed the updates would come with FW launcher...

It's not a patch. Steam has older version of game say 0.41 something. FW latest is 0.75 so STEAM deleted your content and now it's re-downloading whole game with 0.78 version. What valve suckers don't realize that this is total mess up with their customers. Even if game is free, it's FW suppose to supply the game updates not VALVE STEAM.

You sure you didn't accidently log into another server after reinstalling or something?

Right, I assume we can just delete this from steam and get the client from the website so we don't get suckered into another one of these Steam fails?

Just disable auto-updating via Steam and there's no problem.

Might have something to do with our steam account being linked to the ingame store. All steam does is launch the FW launcher which in turn updates the game if it needs to.

Well, F that. Just download the client from perfect world. Steam does not need to apply patches for a game that already has an automatic updater. Our game was already up to date, way to F it up steam.

Humm...it start to download while I was still in the game.

Which is strange, the client did not close. I stood in training ground for a whole night.

It is funny how steam can "delete" the game while I was still playing.

Girl friend's computer actualy quit the game before starting downloading.

Also now the disk usage for this game is 8GB not 4.

So, how to fix it?
Just disable auto update?
is it worth it getting the client straight with no steam?

Its the samething with a 100% chance of getting 0% steam screw ups.

So it does delete your characters?

So it does delete your characters?

I dont see why it would delete your characters. Your characters are saved on the forsaken world servers. Unless they have an issue then I dont see how this steam update would affect your characters at all.

It doesn't delete characters...
They are stored on Forsaken World's servers.

Also, if you don't get it on steam, you can't use steam wallet to purchase stuff in game.

Disabling Auto update doesn't work. My friend did that a while ago (cause he has a bandwidth allowance and all the summer sale updates were chewing through it like nothing. Anyways, he turned off auto update, and steam just deleted it without reinstalling it. Talk about failure, steam. Mandatory delete?

No it didn't end up deleting my characters lol (but it did scare me for a minute). I had tried logging into the wrong server lol. But all is well now. :) Really dumb though to have Steam update the game and then when I verified it, it had something like 56 files that had to be recovered and then when I started the game I had to sit and wait again for it to update there.

Yet another VALVe epic fail. Instead of releasing a patch to update the game, they patched the game themselves and made you redownload it entirely.

Here is the official reply from one of Perfect World Entertainment game admins:

darthpanda16

I communicated with our engineers and they said the way Steam packaged the game, that instead of just including the latest patch, they repackaged the whole game and players have to re-download it. They released a v75 game client.

The info we got was that since most Steam players leave Steam running most of the time, it will download and update and shouldn't affect them.

I know how some of our players have bandwidth caps and other issues like that, unfortunately, nothing is going to be changed about it.

Looks like people who have FW installed directly from PWE lucked out this round.

You can read this in the Forsaken World official forum:

So does that mean this is gonna happen every time FW updates its launcher?

Its the samething with a 100% chance of getting 0% steam screw ups.

Personally, I find the Steam integration to be a lot better than playing without. Adding Eydra leaves to your account is a lot easier to do with Steam, since I don't have to convert USD to Zen, and then convert Zen to Leaves. Just USD to leaves, and if you already have funds in your Steam Wallet, it lets you quickly add funds through the Wallet as a microtransaction.

I occasionally drop about $20 into the game for leaves after my paychecks, because I enjoy the game and want to help support the developers a bit. And because there's absolutely no way in hell I'm going to save up the insane amount of soul coins and reputation needed to get a normal mount, so I just bought one for $10.

I realize that not everybody wants to (or can) deposit money into their account for what's otherwise a free game, so other than the ease of adding money to the game, I've yet to see any other advantage to using Steam to play the game. Except, of course, seeing when your friends are also playing, and chatting with them through the Steam Overlay instead of the strange and convoluted in-game PM system.

Honestly, this really seems like a one-off issue. I'm pretty sure that Valve and Perfect World Entertainment are already working on making sure this sort of problem doesn't happen again in the future, so there's really no reasonable need to re-download Forsaken World from the standalone client (another 4+ GB download to wait on all over again), unless this sort of problem becomes a trend.

EDIT: Also, to all wondering:

THE STEAM UPDATE DOES NOT DELETE YOUR CHARACTERS

What you're experiencing is a result of the game's settings being reverted back to defaults after the entire client was redownloaded. This means your graphics settings were also set back to their defaults (if you've adjusted any of these, you'll probably notice immediately that the game looks different). This also resets your default server. So if you play on Eydra (PVP), you may not notice a difference, because Storm is the default server to select when you first launch the game.

However, if you play on Storm or any other server, you'll have to select your server when you login for the first time. Otherwise, when you log in, you'll see the characters that exist on Eydra, which for most of you is probably zero characters.

Just log out, and on the initial login screen, make sure you're signing into the correct server, and all will be well. Your character data is NOT saved locally on your computer, so there is actually nothing Valve/Steam can possibly do to mess with your characters, as they're stored remotely on PWE's servers, behind your password.

Thats what add non steam game is for ;)

So does that mean this is gonna happen every time FW updates its launcher?

Now this is a good question: is this gonna happen again and again?

I play with 3 friends of mine and I have the "responsability" of bringing them on this game. One of them has a cap of 5 gb per week and his speed is very low so this is a huge problem for him.

If this is gonna happen again I'll tell him to play the game without steam, he doesn't use leaves anyway. No matter how you put it: redownloading a full game instead of patching it is FAIL.

Ha

Steam is so funny.

I think might be a more recent change, I was off steam for a while (say about 2 month). Then the first thing happened is the american army game started to resintall it self whole 2 gb.

Never happened before.

I have unlimited(real unlimted net, none of that peak off peak or throttle crap), so I don't mind.

However I am curious how did steam delete the game while I was playing it...I was in the "training area" the whole night with out D/C.

Unfortuntaly, I didn't know you need to be level 25. I went to sleep and woke up this morning and it already finished downloading.

Need a tech expert to explain "how" steam delete game while I am playing it.

Also BTW, how much disk space is it mean to take?

Mine is sitting on 8GB at the moment

No, our characters are stored on their servers and has nothing to do with steam. I logged in after update and there was no change to my account.

The size of my forsaken world directory(non steam) is 4.46 gigs.
