New fun looking game coming out on the 17th of august
Pre-order on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/33460/)
Info:
In From Dust you assume the God of a tribe that called upon you to help them find their ancestors artifacts.
The player can manipulate the terrain, such as:
using sand to build bridges across the small islands
Creating land with hardened lava
Change the pass of rivers to put out fires
Use sand to put out fires
Natural Disasters occur in-game.
A coming tsnumai can be diverted by using your God-like powers to divert it around your village.
Other disasters could be a volcano eruption or forest fire.
Sandbox Mode:
There to-release date is not an explict sandbox mode, but players can return to the missions after they completed and play the map for an indefinite period of time.
Expansions are being discussed with the ideas of:
Weather simulation
World Editor
Multiplayer Capacity
If this game is big, Ubisoft has stated that they will most likely ship more content for this game.
Update
PC version has been delayed to August 17th. XBLA is still set for a wednesday release date, and PSN is still unknown about its status.
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/25/from-dust-pc-launch-delayed-one-month-available-aug-17/
Team Fortress 2 Hat now availabe for pre-purcashing From Dust.
The Ubisoft DRM, doesnt require an "Always online internet play" as stated by Ubisoft.
The following statement is proved false after release. Refunds should be allowed because of false advertisement/flat out lying to the consumers, But not much is going good for getting a refund
More to come.

According to numerous sources, yes, it'll be available on PC, and Steam specifically, on July 27th:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/from-dust/news/6322805/from-dust-settles-on-pc-july-27
I haven't seen an actual press release from Ubisoft, however.

But it would be stupid not to have a title like this on Steam. BF3-> majority of people will sign up other places for, this title they wont.

No, we've already found out. The trailers have "PC Digital Download" icons in them, and there is a page on the game's site (http://from-dust.ubi.com/from-dust/en-GB/buy-now/index.aspx#tcm2114302-Maintab-3) with information about downloading the PC version. So, there's no question that the game is on PC, at this point.

:confused:did you read any of the other posts in this thread or visit the links before replying?
On topic, this game does look interesting and does kind of evoke some Black and White memories. However it also looks like something that was sort of designed more with PS Move and Kinect in mind than mouse and keyboard.
I wonder how much game there will be for $15. Guess we'll wait and see.

So you say it looks good except it's obviously developed for motion controls and thereby isn't good now? Actually, only one game on the Summer of Arcade for xbox (and indeed, the whole XBL Arcade) supports Kinect and it's not From Dust. Whether the game plays better with M/K or xbox controller is yet to be seen.
Playing this game with Kinect would be ♥♥♥♥ing cool though. That's a literal god game.
Personally, I'm definitely buying this on xbox. If the multiplayer is worth it, I may even buy it again on PC
robotsnik, I do agree with your last statement. The main reason I never bought Limbo is that it's 15 bucks for a very short campaign and I hope From Dust doesn't suffer from that. If it was randomly generated worlds like Minecraft and Terraria, that'd be fantastic.

So you say it looks good
hehe hang on there buddy. Sorry to be picky but if you're going to quote me, quote what I said and not what you say I said :)
..this game does look interesting I never said good. :p
I then follow that sentiment by simply offering a subjective observationHowever it also looks like something that was sort of designed more with PS Move and Kinect in mind than mouse and keyboard. and not at all what you say I said.except it's obviously developed for motion controls and thereby isn't good now?
But I digress
Indeed I too have been burned, for lack of a better word, from games that were slim on the game and ended up making the initial low price seem a bit high. I do fear the potential lack of gameplay and will simply wait to see how it looks when it gets released.
Fingers crossed as I do love the aesthetic and proposed gameplay elements. I'm just interested in what it will offer in terms of gameplay for the pricetag. :)

This game presents a major conundrum for me. I'd sworn to never buy another Ubisoft game again, after they royally screwed over and abused Outerlight (the developer of The Ship and Bloody Good Time), but now they're publishing Eric Chahi's (the creator of Another World and Heart of Darkness) first new game in 13 years, which is perhaps the only thing I'd break that personal boycott over. I have to weigh my hatred of Ubisoft, against my love of Chahi's games. Tough decision!

Gamersgate says August 17th, as well, so I guess that's it.
I expected nothing less from Ubisoft, of course. Last-minute PC delays have been their modus operandi for the last few years. I like how they're still claiming that Assassin's Creed Revelations will be coming to PC on November 15th, same day as consoles. They said the same thing about AC II and Brotherhood. I fully expect a 3-month delay of only the PC version to be announced no earlier than November 5th.

I would like it to be on steam but even if it isn't, I'll still be buying it. I've had my eye on the game for nearly a year now since I first heard about it on the net.
A sort of spiritual successor to Populous (I absolutely adored Populous and Populous: The Beginning, moreso @ The Beginning) it was an immediate must buy for me.

If sales are dictating whether this game gets more content (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/30/sales-will-dictate-if-from-dust-gets-multiplayer-level-editor/), the wise move would be to release it on Steam.

It doesn't really matter much to me where i get it from, but you are correct in saying that it needs to be on Steam to achieve higher sales. If future content depends on sales then i'm afraid i'm going to have to wait and see before purchasing.

Everytime you start it up it needs an internet connection? That's awful. My schools wifi doesn't allow steam to go online from my laptop or UT3 (which for some reason is installed on the schools computer lab, although it really only runs smoothly at 640X480) to connect, even through the LAN.
My lappy's not my main gaming computer so this doesn't really affect me (I doubt it could run From Dust at a satisfactory level), plus I plan on getting the Xbox version of the game, but I can see how needing an internet connection everytime you boot it up can be a deterrent

It's still bad for the ones changed, needing to be online every time you launch the game. Some games still have the always on all the time DRM as well.
RUSE?
No other games have used Steamworks since that one, in fact Ubisoft's most recently upcoming game, Driver, San Francisco (http://store.steampowered.com/app/33440/) uses the UBI DRM. Would be nice if From Dust uses Steamworks, but I'm not holding my breath.

Considering this is an Internet only game, I'll be very surprised if it didn't have always online DRM. Even online activation everytime you run is unacceptable, especially when pirates can play the same game within hours of release, without any problems like this whatsoever.
I guess I could've worded it better, I won't get it if its going to have always online DRM.

They've modified AC II DRM so that it only checks during the start of the game, and stops checking after few minutes.

Can you point me towards any publisher who's had aggressive DRM scheme and released a 'digital distribution only' game without any DRM?

That game cover does not look like the one made public on the Ubisoft store. The one on the store does not show any signs of the "requires permanent internet connection".
I hope they use Steamworks and be done with it. Wonder how their sales went when they started introducing the whole DRM always online scheme. I will probably buy this one as a first try to maybe check out how it works and then get to all the titles I haven't played yet.
If it has no DRM, all the better. I also hope the map editor is in, but they said they wouldn't be putting it in. They said that they had plans for additional content and they also said that you can play maps as long as you want, I think (you can decide yourself when you want to go to the next level). The editor would be nice. I wonder what the modders can come up with. Custom made materials anyone? Real dirt, sand and lava forming glass. Ah the possibilities of crafting and terraforming.

it will most likely be like the last ubisoft game released for steam, assassins creed brotherhood
you can buy it on steam, it downloads everything, keeps it up to date, but really it will launch with uplay and require you to use uplay to launch the game, which is a sign-up service
i think this is a legitimate method for countering piracy, as long as they support their game post-release.
If this is some 1 time release, never receive updates again or bug fixes, its a cheap cop out and not worth supporting.

So is launching Steam to play the game, which is a sign-up service.
You really don't need another additional layer, especially if it restricts access to your game if your connection dies.

I knew it.
It should be obvious that no Ubisoft game will ever launch simultaneously across all platforms again. It's the same thing every single time: last-minute delay, and there is never an explanation for it. They still have Assassin's Creed Revelations listed for a simultaneous launch on November 15, but I absolutely guarantee you, somewhere around November 8th, they will let is slip that the PC version has been pushed back to February 2012, with "no reason given" for the delay.

I've already said it a lot on this thread, but this is typical Ubisoft. They always say there's gonna be simultaneous release, then when the launch date draws near, delay the PC version without any reason.
Same thing is going to happen to Assassin's Creed: Revelations too.
It is not being delayed for any reason other then to delay it. Their reasoning is if their consumers have a PC and X-box and they release it on everything at the same time, users will pirate the game on PC and they will lose a sale.
Ubisoft Shanghai director and former Total War “Evangelist”, Michael de Plater said,
“To be honest, if PC wasn’t pirated to hell and back, there’d probably be a PC version coming out the same day as the other two.”
“But at the moment, if you release the PC version, essentially what you’re doing is letting people have a free version that they rip off instead of a purchased version. Piracy’s basically killing PC.”

Valve would like a word with you.
if people are going to pirate a game they're going to do it on the July 27th or August.. makes no sense to delay it for that reason.
or they expect PC users to rush out and buy a xbox to play the game on release day?
from the looks of it, it won't be a steamworks game. shame because if they were smart they would make it steamworks which makes pirating a game harder.

“But at the moment, if you release the PC version, essentially what you’re doing is letting people have a free version that they rip off instead of a purchased version. Piracy’s basically killing PC.”
Then start releasing demo's. Iam not going to give a statistic here because 98% of statistics are false, but a majority of pirates do so because they want to try the game before spending their money....of course there are a majority that do so to rip the system off.
What Iam trying to get at is, we have all bought a game built on the hype from dev's, we all know the orsum vid's showing us exactly what we wanted....and what the dev's wanted....and in the end we are disappointed, while the dev's have our money. If there had been a demo, then a huge majority wouldnt have purchased the game in the first place.
Piracy in gaming, whether PC or console will NEVER be removed, similar to cheating in MP games...but developers can minimize it by doing the little things better....stop with excuses & come up with solutions.

Join if you would like! :D http://steamcommunity.com/groups/FromDust
Edit: Figures steam goes down the moment I post this
Adding to Wishlist
I'll join and post to main page if you'd like me to do that.
On the Xbox Live summer arcade event, they are selling From dust for 15$ and giving a free copy of "The Maw".
Just a heads up to the 360 players on these forums.

Case anyone's curious: It's out on xbox. I plan on putting a good 3 hours into it tonight. Haven't bought it yet, though, just got the trial to see how it is.
Seems like it's worth buying, Metacritic has some mediocre scores but the biggest complaint seems to be the difficulty spike and even scores that are at the 70 level say it's a wonderful game

Man, after loving Populous 3 The Beginning and still loving it, it'd be impossible not to love this :) Also Populous 3 is still being played online on the Reincarnated Match Maker (google that ) and Ressurection Client, but this one barely has anyone while Reincarnated has usually 50 ppl or more

If enough people get it multiplayer and sandbox will be added.
If enough people get it multiplayer and sandbox will be added.
Or in other words, they are taking features out of the game to sell later on as DLC.
A game giving you the power to sculp the environment has no sandbox mode on release..how hilarious

The game is out and out a puzzle game. I've never played Populous or Black and White but I have a feeling those games were more in line with being a god than this one. In this one, you're more like a guardian angel.
I was so excited for this game but after playing the demo, something stopped me from purchasing the whole game. It's a really good puzzle game with a whole new approach to it, don't get me wrong. It looks like a puzzle game about as much as Toy Soldiers looks like a tower defense game..... but that doesn't change the fact that that's what it is.
This is crazy talk but I may actually wait for a sale.

Such manipulation has been shown to work great for sales amongst the masses.
I've decided not to buy the game.

Xbox live Arcade.
Btw, don't get me wrong. This is a great game but I don't feel it's worth 15 bucks. Thanks to Steam and other digital distributors, I've gotten better games for much cheaper. Tropico 3, anyone?

Ubisoft DRM. AAAAND my string of not buying Ubi games continues. I was actually looking forward to this, but there isn't a chance in hell I'm supporting their crap. -1 sale. And no, "you can just get it on the console" is not a solution Ubi, unless you're deliberately trying to push people to the console versions just to claim there's no PC market, instead of simply alienating the ♥♥♥♥ out of it.

the delay left a bad taste in my mouth, but not only that; they plan on updating the game based on how many copies they sell. what does that tell you about a company?
so in the end, i decided not to buy from dust. i pre-ordered Tropico 4 for $27, and i'll most likely pickup Limbo next week (or when it's available for purchase).
Ubisoft can shove it.

It tells me they are telling the truth rather than lying. how many poorly selling games do you see getting full support? very very few (witcher 1 is one that comes to mind).

Personally I was excited about this game when it was first announced a long while back. Though now not as much.. some things are putting me off on the PC version of it. Not talking about the delay.. but ubi's DRM is kinda putting me off from it.
Heck I would have pre-ordered Heroes of Might and Magic 6 already on steam if it was not for the fact that I am unsure as to if the game will have added DRM or not.

Wait the game has NO SANDBOX MODE? you just have to do the story thing? WTF? I thought it was all about being a sandbox... not getting it if it ain't got a sandbox mode. I don't wanna be pressed by time.. i was imagining building the world, seeing it get populated and I'd mess with the tribes and all that kind o' thing.

Almost every mission is timed from what I hear. I want to buy it, but the game sounds mediocre and Ubisoft keeps giving customers the shaft.

It seems the last level when completing the campaign is the sandbox mode, It's a giant sandbox
Sadly, looks like I'm skipping this one. (Why does Ubisoft punish the gamers? Steam is already an DRM.)
Looked like an fun game.

I guess I'll wait till UBI wises up or I'll just skip it completely...

also if they start pulling that add features as DLC they can ♥♥♥♥ right off

According to Achievement Hunter after you complete a mission you can return to it and continue from where you left, basically sandbox mode

I played the demo.Yes it does have sanbox. The missions werent really timed, it was just a timer for the next devastating event, which in the demo is a tidal wave. You can still play for as long as you want, its just the tidal wave that comes every 6 mins so you need to be quick in establishing villages before it hits. The mission itself wasnt titmed. I actually spent hours stranding some of my villagers on islands i built from sand, and then waited for the timer to count down, then comes the tidal wave. And you can go into a third person view which makes it look pretty freaky as it hits. Its a nice game, but wont get for PC if it has crappe DRM.

Here is what i'm thinking for dlc. Ubisoft adds achievements to their games, and has these points to redeem stuff.
With the assassin's creed brotherhood expansion you could redeem it for 0 points. So uh, yeah.

From Dust’s Steam listing seems pretty standard, but one bit sticks out like a sore thumb – or lava-engulfed tribesman, as it were: “Ubisoft Online Service” in the “third-party DRM” section. But should you be blowing your top over this?
Maybe, maybe not. We’ve contacted Ubisoft on the matter, and according to a representative for the firm: “From Dust will not require a permanent online connection to play in single-player mode.”
Meanwhile, Driver: San Francisco’s Steam listing states: “Ubisoft requires a permanent Internet connection to play this video game at all times.”
Ubisoft always on DRM not required for From Dust’s single-player (http://www.vg247.com/2011/07/28/trouble-brewing-from-dust-pc-version-to-use-ubisoft-online-service-drm/)
Extra DRM is still crappy but as long as it's not the constant connection deal I don't really care, game will be good :p

I was deciding not to buy it due to pretty much any of their DRM inclusion, with maybe considering it if it only required the activation the first time the game was run.
I'm still going to wait until after the game comes out to hear how the DRM is handled, unless they give much more in-depth information on how it's handled before release.

Not the way it should be.
You own the rights to play the game, but not own the game? What is that about. I read the complete thing about it. No thanks Ubi.
Delaying game for PC and throwing on the worse DRM ever besides Starforce. And yet its still second top sellers.

Ubisoft told us yesterday that they see their DRM system as “a success,” saying that it’s led to “a clear reduction in piracy of our titles which required a persistent online connection.”
Wait, did they really said that? Are they honestly that stupid or just lying? DRM has absolutely nothing to do with piracy. Do they not know what most pirates are? Almost nobody cracks the game themselves, they just download the cracked version. Those who do crack the game can crack anything. Just think about securom. It was cracked quickly, yet it's still in some newer games. At this point it's just a nuisance to legit customers.
This game just got off my radar until it's patched.
It might not have constant connection DRM but it still has Ubisoft DRM which is considered one of the worst. No thanks.

Not really, people want to play the game so they bought it. The average gamer probably isn't even aware or doesn't care about the DRM.
What upsets me more is that COD is always on the top 20.
