Is there a trick to this level? There's zero room to move and the constant dying is getting on my nerves.

If there is a trick, I don't know it. I got it through practice, and patience. The short length of the level helps.
My strategy (btw, I use a keyboard) was to go through the diagonal gap without braking. You need to get the angle pretty much perfect, because there is little room for error, and if you have it wrong, there is no time to recover. It takes me many tries, and I just keep restarting when I screw up.
Hit the bouncy tile at the bottom. You don't want to hit any other bouncy tiles before the cannon. If you got the angle right, you'll bounce into the centre of the level. You need to curve your ship clockwise into the cannon. Getting the right trajectory is not as hard as it looks, but my guess is I get it right less than 50% of the time. Again, just try and try.
For the cannon, my strategy is to fire and then immediately brake, and hold the brakes for the rest of the run. After you hit the arrow, you need to turn left. Too little and you'll hit the spikes at the top, too much and you won't be able to avoid the spikes at the bottom. So you need to turn right pretty quickly. This is guesswork for me. However, if you got all this correct, by the time you reach the tile without spikes your ship will be going so slow that you should be able to reach the exit without any difficulty.
Sorry for the long decription, and for not having any easy tricks to beat the level. I didn't really like this level intially either, and I'd say it's in the scrapyard for a reason :P. sirpheonix's ghost website has some ghosts for this level if you need any more assistance. Good luck!
