I bought SR2 for multiplayer and I was sorely disappointed.

Volition confirmed that there is no multiplayer at all this time. It's coop only. From the FAQ:

6. Is there competitive multiplayer in Saints Row: The Third?
6a. No. MP was removed so that the team here at Volition could focus on making the SP and Co-Op experience as amazing and over-the-top as we can.

Quite frankly this is what they asked themselves.
The multiplayer in Saints Row 1 was fantasticly awesome, still one of my favourite mp experiences, as it seemed nicely balanced with a lot of fun inventive gamemodes (protect the pimp [aka vip] and blinged out ride [kill ppl -> collect money -> upgrade car -> win]) and of course they had co-op (albeit in a more basic form than what we now know).
Saints row 2 pvp multiplayer was pretty poor in my opinion, was pretty unbalanced imo, and they got rid of the 2 previously mentioned gamemodes :c
However the introduction of full story co-op was awesome, and i played with my friends all the time through the story, activities and just general messing about.
I am glad they are focusing on the co-op for Saints Row 3 as this was one of the best features in SR2 (imo), though i would reeeeally love if they brought back the team based multiplayer modes from SR1, as those are sorely missed by me :) ...and ive never been a massive fan of just straight up deathmatches.. i always like teams ;)
...so to answer the original question, yeah i'll definately be playing the co-op in SR3 with my friends ^^

How is co-op not multiplayer?

How is co-op not multiplayer?
If this is a serious question, it's rarely used in that context for game releases these days. The word "multiplayer" almost always denotes competitive multiplayer and the specific word "coop" is for cooperative play.

In my language Multi- means many. And the definition of many could be all above 4 players since two are a duo or pair, three are a trio.
I think if you put the word "many" in a sentence:
"there are many more players than just Peter in there".
I think that it has to be at least a group of three "against" Peter to be many (since three is an uneven number). Two against Peter does not feel like many against him. So if the way I'm thinking is right. Then at least 4 players are needed to be a multi players game. But you just need to be a pair to be able to co-operate if that's what you will do :). Still it hangs on the definition of many and a duo is definitely not many.
So co-operative is more than 1
and multipalyer is more than 3
according to me :D:)
Does anyone agree with me on this?

We can argue semantics until the end of time, but it doesn't change the facts of the game, which is all the OP wanted to know.
There is no "multiplayer." There is 2-player cooperative play through the entire game (including story mode and side missions).
Personally, as far as competitive multiplayer is concerned, I'm not sad to see it go. There are literally thousands of games you can play if you just want to frag teh n00bz lolol. It would be the exact same thing in Saints Row with a different coat of paint. No need for it.

I hope that when the game gets released modders will create an unnoficial competitive multiplayer mode for the game, kinda of like modders created MTA for GTA:San Andreas.

Slightly, your logic is correct.
IF Multi meant Many, however. Last time *I* checked, Multi was short for Multiple.
2 players, that counts as MULTIPLE PLAYERS.
I did and still do on occasion with a bud or 2. SR2 is a "buddy" game and playing SR2 with someone else changes the game entirely. The inclusion of full coop play in EVERY aspect of the game was/is what makes the SR2 experience as good as it is. Start to finish and every aspect in between as far as game play goes is why i am stoked about SR3. I can not wait i even put in for vacation time so i can have 2 weeks uninterupted to play. Getting the game on Steam helps find people to shoot with as if you play anything and are not a total ♥♥♥ you should have some one willing to shoot with you. I had to gift a few copies of SR2 to a pal or 2 but i always have someone williing to play it with me.

Ok let me put an end to it once and for all
Co-operative is as in Co-operating meaning assisting each other.
Multiplayer is simply multiple people, this is justified by multiple game modes.

Technically coop is still multiplayer because multi player translates into more than one. Coop is also MP :) sorry dude just being a doosh i have not been one for a bit so i was in withdraw i do feel better now. But as far as SR2 MP no i play coop shooting against people well i have been there done that since 1994 with Doom 2 and eventually the original Quake. Coop was and is the draw for me in any game. I loved the concept of coop play Volition had for SR2 start to finish the entire story and just about every diversion was playable and well that is just too freeking awesome in my book. If there is any games that have that i would be interested in hearing about them so pass the info if you have any thanks.

it seems to me those of you who did not grow up with multiplayer gaming, have seemed to have been confused by the terminology used to describe a games multi user features.
Here's how it really works:
Multiplayer = More than one player
Local Multiplayer = Multiplayer on the same system/screen
It does NOT mean deathmatch, or co op specifically. Those are specified and left to the game itself to decide how it will handle its 'multiplayer'.
By saying "Multiplayer" means simply deathmatch, you are slotting every single game into the same pile, and there may end up being games that blur the lines between co op and deathmatch.

meh, just to skip the semantics and jump to an answer;
I think I will play multiplayer in this game.
Haven`t played it in any of the previous games. a few annoying connection issues in SR2 and such prevented it.
It would be epic if there was a gang vs gang kinda multiplayer in The Third... meh, co-op is just fine. I`m sure they`ll add pvp later.
But let`s see the main dish first...

It would be great if they would add a competitive multiplayer mode in a future update, my favorite part of any game is the multiplayer.

I play Multiplayer on SR2 for the sole purpose of the Co-op with friends, I will probably do the same on here

Will the co-op only be 2 players or 4 this time around? 4 Would be awesome seeing as you could have a "team" of 4 in the 2nd game (you, a friend and two henchmen).

Volition have already confirmed that it will be only 2 player coop on their SR:TT FAQ on the official site.
