what are the minimum requirements to run a server. Do you need to have a decent graphics card? I have a laptop with 512mb of ram and a Pentium M 1.6ghz processor. Will that be able to run a dedicated server?

The specs to run a decent server on a laptop would usually be the same to run a decent server on a desktop.

There shouldn't be any need for a good videocard... but I'd suggest more than 512 ram ... ideally a gig to support a fair number of players. Additionally, I'd go for more RPM in your harddrive than storage space. A 20 gig, 10,000 rpm drive would make much more sense than an 60 gig 5400 or 7200 rpm drive.

Additionally, I'd aim for higher than 2.0 ghz for processor speed, but really, it doesn't need to be that high.

You could run a poor server with lower specs and it would still work, just not ideally.

I've got one at 65.26.29.220:27015. www.theheavyhand.org

It's a AMD2200+ (1.8Ghz) 512 PC133 and it runs fine. I use it strictly as a game server. So, the only extraneous processes on it are Anti-Virus software.

I've only got it set to eight players and I haven't had any problems with it. Some people complain about lag but most do not.

cool i'll have to give it a try. Do i have to download the entire game or just the designated server program?

That's the stand-alone dedicated server. NOT the steam install...
