If I remember correctly, a couple of persons said in the IRC channel that they couldn't send their friend's copy after buying it from getgames. If it happens to you just email mode7 support.

can this cd key be redeemed on steam? as in, allowing me to have it in my steam library and download through steam?

No it can't, the getgames version won't activate on steam, when you use this link (to change the key to a steam one) http://forums.mode7games.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=2705 it simply sends you the original key again.
