View Full Version : The whole FPS/RTS thing.

So, once and for all, here’s the thing: as gamers, we have been disappointed over and over again by the various incarnations of FPS/RTS gameplay on the market since the days of… Battlezone. And even that wasn’t perfect.

In our views as gamers and developers, Nuclear Dawn’s uniqueness lies in the fact that it manages to mesh both gameplay paradigms without leaning too much towards either action (Battlezone), or RTS (Savage).

It is merely Interwave’s point of view as a company that Nuclear Dawn manages to pull off a completely new balance between the genres, one that happens to be in our opinion the best so far. If we didn’t think that, we would not be releasing the game.

We have at no point stated that this is the first RTS/FPS. We have not stated that we invented multiplayer gaming or strategy fusion. Our marketing so far has simply stated that we think we’ve finally done it right.

That’s right – we’re proud of our game, and we want to tell you about it. How are we telling you about it? It’s the first product to offer a full FPS and RTS experience, within a single gameplay model, without crippling or diluting either side of the game.

We have played most of the games that keep getting regurgitated in endless contentious posts on our forums. And you know what? None of the detractors played Nuclear Dawn, so far. It is our firmly held view that our game is pretty damn special, and you can all squabble about who claimed that first – it’s a long list of developers who thought their game was awesome – or you can actually give it a chance. This is our last and final intervention on the matter, until the game comes out, and people start discussing it… based on fact.

This is the Steam Powered User Forums, people are going to troll here heavily...especially once the game is released.

That being said, I felt your posting was well-put. You get kudos from me for that.

Natural Selection 2 is pretty awesome FPS/RTS as well. Odd to not consider it in the same league as Nuclear Dawn.

Guessing ND will blow NS2 out of the water from what the dev is saying about it.

That's, umm, a pretty snarky claim coming from an unproven developer. It looks promising, but is this really the image you want to project? Natural Selection has been around for some time, you know.

Well and 'nough said. Kudos to Silverfell for saving the forums from chronic compulsive complainers invasion.

Personally I never thought NS (or NS2) was ever even close... ND has more promise than the unknown worlds projects, don't get me wrong I love the games in their own right, but it still does NOT in MY OPINION achieve the claim.

Hopefully the RTS in this game is not watered down! If they do succeed to bring a nice juicy rts experience to this game than I'm keeping my pre-order. 8-) (Compared to just RTS games, e.g. Starcraft) The immersion will be great if they do succeed!

To Silverfell,

It does not matter which game did it first, better or bigger. What matters is if your game is loved and played by many.

You do this by patching, tuning and evolving your game so that by the time you're strong enough to make a second game, people would trust you to provide the same quality and professionalism. Take care of your community and we will take care of you.

Good luck InterWave. The only reputation you have to live up to is the one you make right now.

Never even close? How did/does NS(2) fall short? Also what is ND doing that is so much better then NS? I'm genuinely interested.

And I respect your opinion. It's just... I don't normally think it's a good idea for completely unproven indie developers to go out and openly (if indirectly) badmouth their competition.

(And while I'm thinking of FPS/RTSes... anyone remember Savage 2?)

Apple does it all the time, and they are doing fine :P
(this is just a joke - dont turn this into an Apple v PC thread).

Well, fortunately for everyone ND will be playable on both OS's, so If such a conflict arises, we can always fight it out in game, face to face.

NS2 isn't finished yet, so you can't expect the InterWave devs to have played it let alone start judging it.

As for opinions about the original NS, that's already been discussed here (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1425994).

I don't know enough about Nuclear Dawn but from what it promises it outshines NS even in idea but that again is opinion.

Haha I'll be steadily waiting for such an event to happen!

Eh, why not do the same for electing people in politics?
