I have been having a problem on my server with custom maps. It started with me connecting on de_rats for the first time and downloading the map from the server. All of the ladders were white, walls black, etc... Basically it seemed that I was missing several textures. I thought maybe it was just me, and went to fileplanet and downloaded the map pack #1 and it fixed it for me. Then several other people have reported the same problems. I downloaded the map pack for the server thinking that the server was missing some textures but that didn't fix the issue. So, what is wrong, is it a steam bug that allows the user to download the .bsp file, but not all the other necessary files or is it something i am missing? Please help.

Thanks,

You need to have .res files for all maps with custom textures, otherwise it will only dowload the .bsp.

The only .res files with the server are under the platform/resouce and platform/admin folders where my source server is installed. There are not any .res files with the custom maps, just a .bsp .nav and sounds etc... no .res files.

Allow me to back up.. Your right, but what I don't understand is why the .res files are not included with the map pack.. this is crazy and the amount of text needed in the .res file is even more crazy. On that link you sent me one of the posts gives a link to a tool that is an automatic .res creator, do you have this tool or know where else to get it?

Thanks,
Jason

The maps came out before we figured out how to make .res files. Also, no mapmakers can put all the custom textures into the .bsp so hopefully this won't be a problem with newer custom maps. Also, a bunch of .res files have already been made and are in the punkassfraggers.com dowloads section. Some of the people have told me that it didn't download the custom textures even though I have the .res on my server. When I tested it myself it worked though.

You can download the .res file maker here:
http://downloads.punkassfraggers.com/index.php?&direction=0&order=&directory=Counter%20Strike%20Source%20Files/Applications

And here are the .res files that are already made.

How about not promoting .res file technique and push the map designers to put all their map content in one bsp file to save us admins time and headaches..

c'mon map makers.. get with the times.. no more excuses... :D

Most of the newer custom maps I've seen out are doing it this way, but unless mappers redo their older maps to include the textures we need some way of downloading the textures.

Hopefully all new maps have all the content in the .bsp, it was a pain in the ûûû to make the .res files, and I only did the maps with only a few textures.

Thanks for your help... I was going to spend a year making .res files to map out all the custom stuff so I appreciate the links. I agree with the previous poster that it is crazy to think that a .res file should have to be created. In my honest opinion if the mappers want to use .res files instead of getting everything into the .bsp then it should be their responibility to "finish" their map which means including all files that us server admins need to run their maps. What threw me off was that there were no .res files in the map folder before, but now I know.... so thanks for all your help!!

I tried using search but it says it is disabled. I am trying to run a couple of custom maps on my 2003 server I have everything I think set up correctly to use sv_downloadurl but I read somewhere that you have to define what application is accociated with the .bsp files in order to use http download in IIS6 I guess a custom mime type has to be associated to the files that you want to download? Can someone expand on this for me. when i try to donwload a custom map from http://myserver/maps it just disconnects me and says it cant find the mapname.bsp any thoughts would be appreciated.

does this just go in the server maps directory or do you need to upload this to your web space as well

you need to have them in a folder in your web directory as well as your server, you then point your sv_downloadurl to that locations example http://yourwebsite/yourdirectory

inside of yourdirectory you need all the folders associated with any custom map
maps
sounds
etc
