Dota 2 GamesCom Invite Tournament - Livestream is running!

The Stream window just appeared on the Dota 2 website, for those that can't make it to GamesCom themselves - the worlds biggest (public) convention for games, which has just opened its doors 40 minutes ago.


This will be the first time we'll see acutal ingame footage, and it will be played live, by old Dota veterans that will fight for a 1 million bucks price money!

To be honest I am quite dissapointed so far. As a dota veteran, I thought they would bring new mechanics to the game in Dota 2 but it is same old stuff. Sure the graphics are nice and everything but that novelty is gonna wear of after 2 days of gameplay.

Say what you will about LoL being a kiddy MOBA, at least it's not a re-remake of the exact same game.

I'm trying to tell myself that it's in beta, the tournament had to be what original players of DoTA were familiar with, and not all the cards are on the table, but if nothing changes and nothing is added, Valve has essentially spent millions on an engine update.

That money could have gone into Half-Life 3.

A different map layout? New items? This just made Dominion look like Einstien's theory of relativity in a world still trying to grasp basic algebra.

It's called DotA 2 for a reason. And you can't, in good conscience, hold the poor streaming/networking/announcers against the game & gameplay. I'd hold your "review" until they fix the buggy streaming issues.

Also, you can unlock everything in LoL for free (except skins). DotA 2 isn't going to be F2P, last I heard.

It's just randomly laggy, like right now the (english) commentary is super choppy.

You'd think that Valve (or whoever is running the tourny) would've set up a machine dedicated to hosting these games on the GamesCom LAN, so that when the stream / internet starts to lag, the players wouldn't be lagging or getting delay.

But as it seems, whenever the stream starts lagging, the players start talking about delay in the in-game chat... suggesting that the games are being hosted over the internet possibly. (not sure if how the games are being hosted has been covered)

If you played Dota 1 you can understand everything that is going on because it remains the same(heroes/items).

Stream on the other hand is just bad.We hope that Big European matches that start in 10 minutes would be ok to casted.

Also i really cant understand were lagg comes from.Its not only the stream but ingame lag aswell.With 500 people max on valves server playing dota is just bad to lagg.

And viewers at own3D.tv reaches 100K viewers from all streams number pretty low for now :(.When MYM/M5/Navi start playing it will be better.

If deductive reasoning tells me anything it's that the little mic at the top of the page means commentary and the check mark means that game has it.

Checkmark means there is Commentary/Live Streaming. The rest of the matches have to be viewed via replay.

Dota: Source would be a bad name but yes Dota 2 is Dota: Source.

Its still in beta, ofcourse they aren't going to rock anyones world.

Give them time to get it out the door I'm sure they'll be lots of added features once people get familiar with it again.

Not my cup of tea but the game looks really nice. Hope it makes gobs of money so Valve can get back to making games worth playing like HL3.:p:D:cool:

1. They largely do that now and people buy it up like mad.
2. IW/Activision already ruined the Modern Warfare series in terms of being a competitive game.

And that's the big thing to keep in mind. DOTA doesn't have a story, it's a straight multiplayer competitive game. In those games balance is everything, to make wide sweeping changes is to screw up the balance. 2 is more about making it it's own proper game, rather than a mod.

Considering it is getting large number of additional features. Like Matchmaking, Stat Tracking, Reconnect, Guides, Valves Continues Support, Coaching System, Practice Mode.. and probably a lot more. It's safe to say that is most definitely not misleading.

Agree, seemed like the stream was holding up better for that match as well (slight hiccup during the start, but smooth after that)

This type of game seems to have passed me by completely so I don't really understand what I am watching but just going by the commendatory it must be pretty exciting for the fans of this type of game.

Maybe by the end of the tournament if I watch enough of them I will know what's going on :confused:

Demon w/ Beastmaster or Misery w/ Drow. While they lost, I still enjoyed watching them. Demon was doing some crazy things and looked like he was getting sloppy. Misery had a lot of free farm and had hopes he would pull through... but things went down hill pretty fast for poor MYM. :(

Still waiting for a Chen pick. The only Chen pick so far wasn't aired on Stream so now I must wait. Eagerly awaiting what he looks like. (Being my best and favourite Hero in Dota) So here's to hoping I get to see a Chen pick before the end of the tournament! :)

I love the Dark Seer and Nightstalker duo they had going. Dark Seer vacuuming them in and Nightstalker pretty much pounding them down. Then Spectre was just tanking everything.

I honestly felt bad for Drow, who pretty much farmed in her lane the entire game which ultimately did nothing because VS was feeding M5.

It's Captains Mode, which is kind of like Banning Draft afaik (haven't played dota in a while), so they are taking their time banning and picking.


Normally pub games are AllPick, or AllRandom (which start in about a minute)


But as far as the stream is concerned, yeah it will probably take a while for each game to start up.

The goal was to make it as 1:1 as possible with the original Dota. They're basically starting off by literally taking the original dota and remaking it in the source engine.

This wasn't meant to be just a "spiritual successor" like the other MOBA games.

I have no problems to watch it either. The lag issue is apparent to me just for the players.

edit: and those who are claiming for innovation and changes are likely people who's not a hardcore dota player. At least it seems to me.

That doesnt really justify all the build up , it obviously runs exactly the same otherwise these guys that are competing would have to adapt to something new , unless they have all been involved in the design of it.

What are your day 1 impressions?

-Pretty good, however I do stress the importance of the UI in regards to having a "full bottom bar". I think it would be worth noting there are alot of mixed feelings in regards to some aspects of it. One is those blocks and secondly is the avatar. Possible to turn those on or off? Other than that looks appealing!

Yeah, an option to disable the 3D hero portrait needs to get implemented or something...

Or at the very least add a minimal ui mode, like TF2.
