Because Hunted The Demon's Souls (another Bethesda title) didn't.

Hmm that's why we could not buy it on steam in the uk then.
I thought as much it would be steamworks.

Great off to look at the cheapest deals on the online stores :)

Great news!

because Hunted: The Demon's Forge didn't use steamworks.

Good news! Now I`ll be able to play Skyrim on english and not like Oblivion with the horrible german voice-over.

So Urm.... What does this mean? :D

It means that if you buy the game retail (or from any digital distributor) you'll still be able to register it to your steam account. This means no cd-checks, (probably) achievements, the ability to access your game from any PC in the world etc.

So if I preorder if from gtoplay .net, I can activate on Steam? Or do I have to activate it via Steam?

Buy it cheap from box seller. Enter the code into steam and as far as steam is concerned it gets treated like any game you bought off steam.

You can download and install it from steam just as if you bought it on steam, steam will patch it and keep it up to date, later DLC bought through steam will "just work", if it has steam cloud support that will work too.

Basically you are buying a game key cheaply elsewhere and getting all the steam benefits. You can throw the box and DVD away ( might wanna keep the cloth map you get ).

It's a shame - I would rather give my money to steam to support steam but they can't compete on price :( - Ahh well Steam's loss, our gain.

Ah excellent. This is precisely what I was wondering about Skyrim since it was announced as Steamworks.

I'm keen to buy the game legitimately, but not at the $90 USD they're asking for AU/NZ region.

So just to 100% clarify, can buy a retail box key and activate it? Have there ever been any exceptions where steamworks keys from a box haven't allowed steam activation? I can't imagine such a thing, but one thing I'd hate more than to pay the stupid regional price is to waste the money entirely. :P

wondering the same. And actually.. if the game is Steamworks only then no, its not posible to play without steam wherever bought. But there are games, there are steamworks when bought on steam and nonsteamworks version when bought on retail.

Since people saying its steamworks game pretty good assumption its steamworks only. But still enough time to see "this game needs steam in order to play" on other DD and retail pages :)

I would like retail box with map. But I'm little confused since no preorder (or skyrim page) in my region (CE). Thats something unknown for me on steamworks games.

I think skyrim should be steam only as fallout new vegas was. The only game I can think that uses steamworks and doesn't use steam off steam is borderlands.
But then again it only has achievements.

Now that is a sign of relief. I was getting worried that it might use GFWL. Bethesda is making an excellent "business" decision there.

That's not adorable... it doesn't even have fur everywhere... and since when do dogs carry axes. Oh wait it's the dark elf with the strange brow ;-)

I'm still going to buy it at retail to get the map for nostalgia sake, but I'm fine with it being on Steamworks though so it'll be easy to get DLC and stuff.

I'm still not sure what to do. I could buy the game for 30€ at a key shop, but it would be the retail key. If it is activatable over Steam I would be happy, but it would sucks if I have to get a DVD :(

As a matter of fact, you HAVE to activate it on Steam in order to play. You also get a DVD which allows you to install it from the DVD so you don't have to download it (guessing the servers will be slow that day).

Many people ask these questions. I hope this answers all of them.
