Any error, or just simply crashes to desktop? Also post specs please.

LucianDK

as I said, the preparing to run box comes up as normally happens with most games steam is preparing to run. Then nothing after it disappears after a moment! Nothing else happens.

I have the same problem. It has something to do with 64-bit Windows. I had 64-bit java 7 installed but it gave me some error so I installed java 6 update 26. The error vanished but the game wont start.

I have win 7 64 bit as well. Though I got no error messages.

Edit: got Java 6 update 26 64 bit version.

That error message was because my 64-bit java was version 7 that the program did not recognize.

Sounds like its a win7 compatibility issue then.

I sent an email to the developer stating the problem. I also linked this forum thread for them. Now to wait and see what happens.

game doesn't start for me either
Run it, window pops up saying First time setup (step of ) and then it just closes.

Also on win7 x64.

Tried running the stuff in the Prerequisites folder, to see if it was just something from first time setup that was breaking it, but its made no difference.

Ive gotten Blocks that Matter to work on my machine by removing Java 6 update 26 64 bit version and only having the standard 32 bit version on my win7 computer.

And I should note I have the 64 bit OS version.

As soon the 64 bit version of java is installed, the BTM ceases working.

Interesting. The sad thing is that I need to have the 64-bit java installed for Minecarft to work correctly.

Likewise.
They even packaged it with a 64bit installer for Java. :/
Hope they get a fix out quick.

BTM ceases working as soon the 64 bit update is applied, but will work anew once its gone.

Found a solution. For me, the game was crashing (when run from command window) with an error;

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: C:\Abandon\Steam\steamapps\common\blocks that matter\SteamJNI.dll: Can't load IA 32-bit .dll on a AMD 64-bit platform

FIX: Edit BTM_DBG_launcher_win.bat with notepad or anything else - change it to read;

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe" -Djava.library.path=. -jar BTM.jar

Run the game, enjoy. Other users have reported that simply browsing to the 'Steam\Steamapps\Common\Blocks That Matter' directory and double-clicking the BTM.jar will run the game as well.

The cause; I think their launcher simply searches the PATH variable for the first Java, OR is hard-coded for "C:\Program Files\Java" instead of doing a 32-bit/64-bit check. Easy fix.

If you didn't understand anything I just said: Wait for them to patch it. It won't take long.

I have Windows 7 64 bit like the others and tried both of your ways to fix the problem. Unfortunatly both didnt work for me. I've got Java 6.26 and it works (Minecraft has no problems)

:(

If I try to run the .jar it says something like:

Please check if your plateform [sic] is set up correctly.

Lol, also the readme says that it's still a tech demo.
I would have wanted to know that BEFORE buying.

This solution works, you need to then manually run the same .bat that you edit in the steamapps folder. This is for people with 64-bit java version. Others may still have issues.

I run 64 bit and that did actually work. The problem was a space in between the old line and the new stuff to add

Yea i just copied it exactly as his post is, deleting the whole text in the bat, and it worked.

The devs are aware of the problem.

And they're waiting for Valve to create their game forum.

You may catch the devs in the game's Official group chat.

I signed up just to give my solution to the problem. I'm on win 7 64bit and was getting the '1 of 1' window and then nothing.
My solution:
Make a shortcut on the desktop to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\blocks that matter\BTM.jar"
Delete the original Blocks the Matter shortcut to avoid the confusion.
You can change it to the BTM thumbnail by Right Click>Properties>Shortcut>Change Icon>then browse to %ProgramFiles% (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\blocks that matter\BTM_launcher_win.exe

Should work.

Hi every body!

I'm the dumb programmer who wrote this thing that you can't launch on you computer :(
I finally get the Steam admin validation, so I can put messages here now!

I've just uploaded a big patch archive on our website:

http://swingswingsubmarine.com/BTM_DBG/BTM_UBER_Patch_001_Windows.zip

it contains:
- bin folder
- lib folder
- Prerequisites folder
- BTM_DBG_embedded_jvm_win.bat file
- BTM_launcher_win.exe file
- InstallScript.vdf file

All this stuff need to be uncompressed in the "\Steam\steamapps\common\blocks that matter"

Every file that already exist need to be replaced by the new ones!

I'm running some test myself. But could you please tell me if it works on your computer? If you got the time of course!

You'll need to hit the Steam Play button to install the vc_redist
(or install it manually by launching the "vcredist_x86.exe" by hand, situated in the "blocks that matter\Prerequisites" folder)

Thanks!

I hope this will solve the Windows 7 64bits issues, and the others too!

Yes! This fixed it. Thank you much, Guillaume. It's good to see such a quick fix from the developers. I'd have to assume no one else has responded because the patch worked for them and now they cannot stop playing, which is what I'm going to go do now.

Thanks again!

Wanted to bomb the blocks from top to down 8 in a row..but how it looks it works only from left to right/right left not top and down.....

Edit: Found a way had to bomb the blocks from the bottom not the one from the top :D

Has anyone had an issue trying to change the Res. Native (full)? Every time I change it the screen goes black and I have to hit escape to close the game out. I would really like to run the game in a window.

Also, Guillame, I just extracted your patch and ran the game from Steam, and I get this error message on first launch:

A newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable has been detected on the machine.

Hi again,

Thanks for the "VC redist" report, i will package a newer one to the real and automated Steam update (I hope for tonight or tomorrow).

As for the resolution issue, sounds weird.

Anyway, you can change the resolution by hand (again, I love doing things by hand!), and here's how:

- go to the folder "Steam\steamapps\common\blocks that matter\config\"
- open the "DisplayOptions.xml" file with your favorite text editor
- change the line "<fullscreen value="1"/>" by "<fullscreen value="0"/>" (without quotes)

- you can also specify a custom size for the window, by default it's on 1280*720 (which his the "Res. Pix Perfect (Win)" entry in the game options) thanks to theses lines
<windowedWidth value="1280"/>
<windowedHeight value="720"/>

Try to keep the ratio :), for example the "Res 80% (Win)" of the option will be this:
<windowedWidth value="1024"/>
<windowedHeight value="576"/>

- save the edited file

- relaunch the game!

Hope it helps

Now since today i wanted to play again the game first the game stucked on loading screen(endless loading)
Then i restarted the game and he Updated those Microsoft Visual stuff and now i don't even can start more the game? Im getting Invalid or corrupt jarfile BTM.jar.

Hi Chronus,

What is your system? (just to know)

Can you try to uninstall the game in the Steam Game Library (right click, remove local files or something).

Then reinstall it again,

Your files (saves, levels, settings) shouldn't being touched. If you fear for them, you can back up the folders (all in the "block that matter" folder' root):
- Blocks That Matter Saves
- Community
- config

Sorry for troubling your game experience :(

Hi RedJustice,

Can you run the "BTM_DBG_embedded_jvm_win.bat" that you can find in the Steam/steamapps/common/blocks that matter/ foler please?

Also, additionnal question:
- did the game already launched with the 1.0.0.0 version?
- did the update to 1.0.0.1 make that crash appear?

Maybe unsinstalling the game (right click on the game > remove local files and reinstalling could help.

Discovered something by accident. Last night tried to run BTM and I believe I was getting memory errors, java was creating hs_err_pidxxxx.log files stating insufficient memory. When I executed the program today using the file you mentioned the game ran fine with no problems but there was no sound, then I realized my headset was plugged in. I unplugged the headset and re-executed the game and CTD after 2 minute loading screen. Evidently the game runs with the headset plugged in and doesn't without it pluged in. I can send you the error logs if that would help, but glad to have a work around.

Hi,

Sorry to hear that it's not running.

Few questions:
->> Are you launching the game from the steam client, or by double clicking the BTM_launcher_osx.app in the "bloc that matter" folder?

->> Can you try doing the following:

Make SURE the Steam client is launched
Open a Terminal (tehre is an application called Terminal in Spotlight)
type this line in the Terminal:

cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/blocks\ that\ matter/

(press enter to validate)
then type this one:

java -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -Djava.library.path=. -jar BTM.jar -d32

(enter to validate)

Does it launch?

If it launch, it means that there is a lack of arguments passed to the Java Machine via the .app.

To manually fix the thing, you can:
open a finder,

In finder, press "command + shift + g", then it will ask you where you want to go:
enter "~/Library" ("~" on mac is Alt+n)
Then go to "Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/blocks that matter/"

You'll find and .app in there "BTM_launcher_osx",
right click on the app and then choose "Show Package Contents"
navigate to Content/Resources
edit the script file with Text Editor
The file should contains the following:

------------------------------------
cd ../../..
java -Xdock:name="BTM" \
-Xdock:icon="config/BTM.icns" \
-jar BTM.jar -d32
------------------------------------

Replace the content with this:

------------------------------------
cd ../../..
java -Xdock:name="BTM" \
-Xdock:icon="config/BTM.icns" \
-jar BTM.jar -d32 -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -Djava.library.path=.
------------------------------------

Save the file
return to the folder contaning the app (by using the little left arrow on the top left corner of the Finder window)
double click the app file

Hope this will temporary help you to launch, just let me know, and feel free to send me an email to guillaume(at)swingswingsubmarine(dot)com.

Do you have a USB headset??

If so, when you plug it in, you effectively change the 'default' soundcard and it's possible Java simply doesn't recognise it!?

If it's just a 3.5mm headset then the problem is more likely related to your drivers - many soundcards can detect a headset and will change settings (disabling surround sound or effects or whatever)...

The headset is USB. I will try to update my sound card and see if that works. Thanks.

Sound card/drivers were the problem. Fixed.

This makes it run, but not through Steam.

This makes it run, but not through Steam.

I know, i know.

I'm trying hard to fix this damn issue :(

You can also make an alias of the app (right click on the app > alias) and drop the Alias where you want (like desktop).

I know it doesn't replace the in steam launch :[

I have the same problem. It has something to do with 64-bit Windows. I had 64-bit java 7 installed but it gave me some error so I installed java 6 update 26. The error vanished but the game wont start.

I had the same issue. I updated to java 6 update 27 and the game starts just fine now.

Hello, this is my first post here in the Steam forum and I am new to Steam in general. My first game I bought was Blocks That Matter. I was disapointed to discover that it always crashes without explination after the yellow submarine fades out. I am trying to run it on a Eee PC 1005HAB. It has a Intel N270 1.6GHz processor and 1 gig of RAM. The operating system is Windows XP Home Edition. Is there hope?

I have Win XP 32-bit. Everything updated. Graphics card, java, etc. I'm getting the BTM "loading please wait" screen with the bouncing Blocks that Matter. I have to ctrl-alt-del to hard exit the game. Any thoughts? I have tried the above fixes...but since I don't have 64 bit Win, nor do I have Win 7, I imagine my problem is something different.
Thanks in advance guys.

win 7 , 64 bit. I reinstalled windows and it works fine now. It didnt work before, same problems like you have guys. I think the problem was me ripping and cutting useless software from windows, and the game lacked it. Its something with visual studio prolly or some ♥♥♥♥ like that. Cheers
