This thing is unplayable. Using the keyboard I can only jump, run left and self destruct. If I use a 360 controller it does nothing at all.

The X-Box controller has to be enabled before you actually start the game.

Also if you have further problems with your controls go to Steam\SteamApps\common\blocks that matter\ and delete the config folder there. Then validate your local game files via Steam. It helped for me.

The controller is always plugged in. When I press a button at the start, the game shows pad buttons instead of keyboard commands. I only tried the controller because the keyboard controls weren't working except for three commands. Also it acts as though the left arrow key is being held down; I bring the cursor over the volume and it lowers itself to zero, screen size does the the same going to the lowest value on it's own. start a level, the character runs left, I can only jump or blow him up. I tried your suggestion with same results.

Same here.:cool: But I had to configure it first using the ingame-menu...

I've done all that.
The controller is not really the issue though as I would prefer to use my keyboard which even after configuring, as I did with the 360 pad, only three of the commands work.
I'm glad it work's for you guys just fine though, thanks for your input.

Have you tried the keyboard wizard configuror that you can find in the Options menu? (you can go there with the mouse)

Did the update fix your issue?
Or did you fond a way to play with your keyboard?

Btw, what is your keyboard model?
Does it got something particular? Like additional stuff like keypad or something with analog inputs?

Thanks!

Hi Guillaume, I did try the wizard for the keyboard as well as the 360 controller without any luck.

I haven't tried the update (I wasn't aware of an update till I read your post, Thanks).

My main keyboard is a Logitech G510 along with a Logitech G13.

Thanks for your precisions.

Can you try to unplug your G13 BEFORE launching the game, just to see if it helps localize where the problem come from.
And if it does nothing, it will be awesome if you had a really old keyboard to test with.
If the G510 is ausing the issue, I will have a real hint of what I must do to adress that annoying bug!

Thanks!

Hello,
I have the same problem, i can jump and self destruct, and the little guy keeps running to the left (like the left button is stuck). Im only using a keyboard (irocks kr 6220g) with a mouse (logitech rx250), no other input devices connected.
Have tried to:
-disconnect the mouse or the keyboard before launching the game, each in turn.
-disconnect the mouse or the keyboard ingame.
-change the keyboards controls.
-change the keyboard (logitech deluxe access).
when I unplug then plug the keyboard, the thing stops for 1 seconde, then restarts to go to the left.
Thanks

I'm using a USB gamepad and the game allows me to configure it in the options, but once I finish that, it won't register any button presses. Only the keyboard works. For now, I'm using JoyToKey.

The game won't work if multiple gamepads are plugged in.
This is may be my problem, but the game works, just not gamepad controls.

Hi kedeomas!

Thanks for the very precise reproduction and all your tests.

I'm trying to reproduce this on my side.
To do that, I need to know what OS you use?

And what is your direct input configuration, to know that, you can get the info by typing "dxdiag" in the execute prompt of your Windows Start menu.

Other things you could try to give me hints:

1/ Does the "left arrow key always down" issue occurs in menu? Do do that, simply go to the "Options" menu and see if the "Volume" slider (the first hing that should be selected in the menu) is going down automatically or if you need to press the left arrow to go there!

2/ If you got the chance, could you try to launch teh game using the .bat file, situated here:
\Steam\SteamApps\common\blocks that matter\BTM_DBG_embedded_jvm_win.bat

It will open a windows and run the game. When you quit the game, this window will be still opened, waiting you to press any key to close.
If you got the time to run the game this way and go in a level that provoke the issue, and then quit the game and see something weird in the displayed info (or screenshot the command prompt window!), it would be great.

Thanks for your time!

Guillaume

Hi TideGear!

What is the gamepad you're using?

The issue is maybe due to the game that will not listen to some input devices even if the wizard allow you to configure it.

To know the name of your device from the game point of view, you can try to get this archive file:
http://swingswingsubmarine.com/BTM_DBG/InputScanner.zip

Unzip it where you want, and double click the ScanWindows.bat included in there.

It will show you some command line window and some info about the devices scanned on your computer.

Here is a sample of that program on my computer:
-------------------------------------------------
DEVICE CONTROLLER 0:
name: XBOX 360 For Windows (Controller)
axis count: 5
axis 0 name: Axe Y
axis 1 name: Axe X
axis 2 name: Rotation Y
axis 3 name: Rotation X
axis 4 name: Axe Z
buttons count: 10
button 0 name: Bouton 0
button 1 name: Bouton 1
button 2 name: Bouton 2
button 3 name: Bouton 3
button 4 name: Bouton 4
button 5 name: Bouton 5
button 6 name: Bouton 6
button 7 name: Bouton 7
button 8 name: Bouton 8
button 9 name: Bouton 9
-------------------------------------------------

The important thing here is the "name: XBOX 360 For Windows (Controller)"

It's the name of your controller from the game point of view.

To be able to handle your device, his name must be in the list contained in the "Steam\SteamApps\common\blocks that matter\config\KeyMapping.xml" text file.

You can open this file with a simple text editor like notepad, and check those lines:
---------------------------
<GamepadValidNames>
<Name value="controller"/>
<Name value="joystick"/>
<Name value="gamepad"/>
<Name value="rumblepad"/>
<Name value=" pad"/>
</GamepadValidNames>
---------------------------

If your controller name doesn't include one of the value above ("controller", or "joystick", etc), then you should add a line to this "GamepadValidNames" bloc, to make it looks like this:

---------------------------
<GamepadValidNames>
<Name value="controller"/>
<Name value="joystick"/>
<Name value="gamepad"/>
<Name value="rumblepad"/>
<Name value=" pad"/>
<Name value="my gamedevice model"/>
</GamepadValidNames>
---------------------------

This example is correct if the "InputScanner" program that shows the devices names on your computer was displaying such a name for your gamepad:
"name: The Brand Or Anything My Gamedevice Model (USB)"
(this name contains "my game pad", so it will be taken into account by the game).

All you have to take care of is saving the "KeyMapping.xml" file and restart the game.

If your controller name is already in the file, then it means that's another problem, and it would be awesome of you can indocate me the model of your gamepad, and it's full name (from the game point of view, thanks to the "InputScanner" program).

Thanks!

Guillaume

Hi kedeomas!

Thanks for your time testing stuff.

To be able to launch the game with the .bat file, you'll need to have the Steam client launched. Was it the case?
The Error message you got when launching from the bat indicate that the game didn't find a running Steam client to connect with.

If the Steam client was launched, just try to completely quit the client (right click in the icon tray) and restart it.

For the DXInput results, what is this device:
"VJoy Virtual Joystick"?

Is it a real joystick?

Because if it's not, maybe it's this "Virtual" device that always
gives the game a "left input".

To be sure that this "virtual" joystick is not taken into account by the game, simply do the following:

- open the text file located in "Steam\SteamApps\common\blocks that matter\config\KeyMapping.xml"

- You can open this file with a simple text editor like notepad, it should contains a "GamepadValidNames" section that looks like this:
---------------------------
<GamepadValidNames>
<Name value="controller"/>
<Name value="joystick"/>
<Name value="gamepad"/>
<Name value="rumblepad"/>
<Name value=" pad"/>
</GamepadValidNames>
---------------------------

- Just remove the line where the "joystick" keyword appears, so that your "Virtual Joystick" will not be handled like a real device.

- The section should look like this after you edited it:
---------------------------
<GamepadValidNames>
<Name value="controller"/>
<Name value="gamepad"/>
<Name value="rumblepad"/>
<Name value=" pad"/>
</GamepadValidNames>
---------------------------

- Save the file
- Restart the game with your keyboard plugged in

Does it work?

I hope it could solve your issue :( Else let me know and we will make some extra test!

Thanks

Guillaume

Howdy, Guillame! Playing with a dualshock 2 controller, I found that whenever I launch the game with a 'fresh' KeyMapping.xml, I can get to the control wizard fine and everything works perfectly. But if I ever relaunch the game, it doesn't recognize any button presses from the controller.

With some fiddling, I found that the first use of the control wizard creates a new <GamepadMappings>. If I remove the forceIndex="1" variable, it fixes the issue permanently, {edit:} unless I reconfigure the controls (then it puts the forceIndex back in). So this is just some feedback.

The single Dualshock 2 is plugged into this 2-port doodad (http://www.amazon.com/PS2-USB-Dual-Controller-Adapter-Converter/dp/B000F6BGXY) (so it may be considered 'multiple gamepads'). Both 'devices' show up on the input scanner as Twin USB Joystick. And I'm on windows 7 64-bit.

If you want any bloated logs of text, just ask. I'm adoring the game and it's great to see a helpful dev on their forum.

Hello,
Vjoy Virtual Joystick is a virtual joystick from the keyboard2joystick application vjoy. But my controls (keyboard or pad) were working fine since i let my usb pad plugged (without editing KeyMapping.xml).

You were right, cant launch the bat without steam opened. And changing KeyMapping.xml did resolve the problem.

thank you again.

I am having the same problem. I only have a G11 logitech keyboard and a steel series XAI mouse connected to the computer. I just bought the bundle specifically for this game, but I cannot play.

To itemize my issue:
I only have a mouse and a keyboard
When I start the game everything works fine (left, right, up, down)
When I start a map it ignores all input except self-destruct
When I start a map it acts if left was being pressed, constantly

Edit:
Did some more fooling around. It seems the controls, including pause (and SKIP!) works during the "cut-scene" where the plot is explained. However as soon as the map has started up, everything breaks. Thus far I've found out that it accepts these inputs and nothing else:

camera-mode? Pressing and holding "c" makes the game lose focus and immediately move UP and LEFT at a constant rate until the edge of the map is reached. Reacts to mouse (pull to other sides) but ignores keyboard.

Self-destruct, as started (pressing "w").

Jumping.

Pausing (escape) but none of the shortcuts once paused. Reacts to unpausing. Has to FORCE game to shut down to exit it.

edit 2:
Seems like the thing with the cut-scene was a fluke... didn't work from there. However I've narrowed it down to happen already at the map selection part. I can enter the map selection and it presses me to the left (didn't notice this at first) and then leave it and stuff works again. Inside map selection: KEYS BROKE. Outside map selection: KEYS WORK.

I've no idea why this would be happening...

Well, it seems that the Lazareth issue was due to a "virtual joystick" device.

I don't know that this kind of device is, but it's giving wrong info to the game which think the stick is stuck on the left.

To workaround this, you can remove some lines in the keyboard config file:

- go into the "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\blocks that matter\config" (or the equivalent in MacOS).

- edit the KeyMapping.xml with a text editor

- replace this:
<GamepadValidNames>
<Name value="controller"/>
<Name value="joystick"/>
<Name value="gamepad"/>
<Name value="rumblepad"/>
<Name value=" pad"/>
</GamepadValidNames>

with this:
<GamepadValidNames>
<Name value="controller"/>
<!--<Name value="joystick"/>-->
<Name value="gamepad"/>
<Name value="rumblepad"/>
<Name value=" pad"/>
</GamepadValidNames>

(considering that the virtual input device is something like "virtual joystick").

If you don't want to use any gamepad, just keyboard, you can comments all the valid names and having this:
<GamepadValidNames>
<!--<Name value="controller"/>
<Name value="joystick"/>
<Name value="gamepad"/>
<Name value="rumblepad"/>
<Name value=" pad"/>-->
</GamepadValidNames>

I'm going to discard input device containing "virtual joystick" in their name to try to avoid this issue in future update.

Thanks!

Guillaume

I'm having this same problem. Can move left right, jump, but the drill buttons just make my feet squiggle and nothing more.

Have you played far enough to be upgraded to the drill?

All that happens is I can move left and right, and jump up-- but there is no way to progress past any of the obstacles... None of the keys seem to do much~ :(

Edit:
After seeing the above post, I broke down and went to look at a level walkthrough...

I guess the whole "playing mario" thing wasn't obvious after seeing all the trailer action of drilling through your obstacles...

Sorry for being an idiot :(

Hey, you're far from being an idiot!

If there are idiots here: it's us, for not being able to make a proper tutorial that will guide the player and tell him that he can only jump and had to find a way to get to that thing that will upgrade him.
