Just remember that other than Lord of the Rings, Warhammer 40K as well as Warhammer Fantasy, both had Orks in their universe back in the 1980's which is many years before the first Blizzard World of Warcraft/warcraft Orcs versus Humans ever came out in the 1990's.
Even the paperback books and novels pre-dated anything from Blizzard by a decade.
So for all the WoW Fanboi's just make sure you know what you are talking about when you make comparisons now that Warhammer 40K: Space Marine is almost out and ESPECIALLY when the Warhammer 40K MMO comes out 2012/2013 "Dark Millenium".
In the grim dark future of the 41st millenium there is only war....in WoW there is only cartoonish graphics, Panda's and other "babys game" stuff.

Gamesworkshop, and Blizzard have alot of history. Blizzard wouldn't exist if it wasn't for gamesworkshop. Way back when video games were booming, and getting popular. Gamesworkshop hired blizzard to make them a Warhammer fantasy/40k video games. Blizzard being a freelancer completed the work, then GW changed their minds and pulled out.

This pissed off blizzard, so they changed a few names, made the grahpics look slightly different. Made a story line for it. Then sold it on public, became the biggest seller ever. That is why it took blizzard 10 yrs to come out with SC2, because Gamesworkshop was taking them to court for copyright infringement, and I believed GW sued them behind closed doors.

Wow, thanks for the info!
Could you imagine if Blizzard would have had their act together back then, and actually developed Warhammer?
Instead of Pandas, Blood Elves, and baby stuff, we would have had Waaagghhhh!

Yes yes fanboys. Anyone who looks that up will know, but it's otherwise irrelevant, as the concepts are still entirely different besides the inclusion of similar lore centerpieces like elves, orcs, whatnot.

They didn't make Warhammer but went an entirely different way with the more traditional versions of orcs. There is no reason to compare.

Sound like a bunch of demagogues proclaiming the right of their fanaticism.. quite related to 40k, ironically. But why do you feel the need to bring it up on a Warhammer thread? Trying to root out the hereti... oh...♥♥♥♥.

So what? Orcs have been used in fiction for hundreds of years, though Tolkien's modern concept is what is most often used now.

Making it a point to say that GW used Orcs in Warhammer before Blizzard used orcs in Warcraft is just shallow and pointless... like saying Lifehouse was making music before Kanye West.

Aargh!

That's not true at all. First of all, while Tolkien used many races from ancient mythology (like Elves, Dwarves and Goblins), he was the first one to use Orcs. You can look this up if you don't believe it.

Second, as squid5689 pointed out, WarCraft's Orcs came directly from Warhammer's Orks. Sure they made some changes, and changed them even more later on with WarCraft III and WoW, but their roots lie with GW.

In the end I don't think it really matters though. They're different enough that it's easy to recognize whether something is a 40k Ork or a WC Orc, and both companies borrowed plenty of ideas from other sources as well as coming up with plenty of their own stuff. It doesn't make one better or worse, and it doesn't affect the quality of the games.

This thread was a pre-emptive strike against the WoW fanboi's who already claim WH40K: DM is WoW in space.
And to a lesser degree the Gears of War fanboi's who claim this is Gears of Warhammer.
HERESY!
