Hi all,

Our apologies for the tech issue some of you are having with higher end machines. We are working on a solution. Stay tuned to this post for more information.

In the meantime, any feedback (what worked/didn't) on this issue please comment here.

Can you also ensure that everything on your machine is up to date?

Thanks for listening.

I have a 6 core AMD CPU, 12gb ram, and a GTX 580 video card. My issue is a slowdown that happens within the first 10 seconds of starting a level that makes the game unplayable. Basically, all animation slows down to a crawl...character motions, the spinning tutorial scrolls, etc. The game launches completely normally, but 10 seconds into the game it slows down. Exiting to the main menu and clicking "Play" again has the same effect...starts normally, then slows down about 10 seconds later.

I have a VMware virtual machine with XP, and the game runs mostly normally in there (other than VMware related issues.)

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.

Are you going to release Desperados on Steam as well?

Edit: oops, that was my old video card, I actually have a GTX 580 as well.

Hi Jeff. Great to see you here. Contacting Steam support obviously helps :) Win7, 64-bit user with 4.5 ghz i2600k cpu and 16 gigs of ram, Gtx580 here.

Tried just about anything with no noticable effect: Using compatibility mode with a variety of emulations, turning off desktop composition, disable visual themes, running as administrator. Also, changing graphics settings in-game does not change the performance, like others experience. Lower resolutions than 1024x768 are also sluggish. Its weird that there are reports of the game running better on slower computers, and that top end pc's run the Robin Hood the worst.

Thanks for looking into this matter Jeff. Would love to play this game properly.

How did you get that report?

How did you get that report?

(1) From a command prompt or the run menu in Windows - type dxdiag
(2) select "Save All Information" (It generates a txt file)
(3) copy the system and display info from the txt file into the post.

You'll probably want to truncate the display section after the driver/version info... It generates alot of device specific info beyond that point.

Oh hello. I'm very glad that you are looking into the problem, since I really want to play the game like I did all those years ago.

The only problem I'm having is some framerate drop, and it seems to drop more as I have more characters selected at once.

My operating system is
windows 7 32-bit and
I have an ATI radeon 6850 HD graphics card.

I also have the latest versions of the directX and my graphics card drivers.

Sadly this is all the info I can give you as I don't know how to check on the rest if it even is rellevant

I'm so sad. I was really excited to play this since I missed it way back when, but yeah, I'm hitting abysmal framerates as well. The only thing I've been able to do to make it tolerable is lower the resolution to 640x480, but it's just not good at that res. Zooming out makes everything pixellated.

In comparison, I'm able to run DXHR at max settings w/triple buffering enabled. o_O

FWIW, the disc copy and the Amazon d/l version run perfectly on Vista64. Steam's version has major lag on my machine though. I have no idea why the Steam copy is all messed up.

Very interesting confirmation.

I noticed that the demo download from Spellbounds website runs perfectly as well.. So it does seem to be linked to the Steam port.

But also remember that the demo is running 1.0 we are running the 1.1 version which was done due lagging older models of windows. You can read it here

I've got win7 a nvidia geforce and a intel core 2 duo. The game works only in slowmotion.
I'think that steam is slowing down the game to cover up for the use of multithreading and multiprocessing wich older games aren't used to. Most old games are running too fast because they are only adjusted to one processor.
When I went out during the game by pressing "alt+tab (or esc)" and turning back to the game again, it runs for a very short time (4-10sec.) well but then it does turn into slow motion again. :(

I purchased the version on Amazon. Runs nicely. The only time when the mouse lags is in the key rebind screen. But the game itself runs nicely.

Hi all,

Thanks for your feedback.

It looks like there is a simple solution to this problem. Open your video card's control panel and locate the anti-aliasing parameter. If currently set to 'auto' then adjust so it's set to the highest value possible. Restart Robin Hood.

Let us know how this works out!

Changing that didn't make any difference at all. No improvement regardless of any setting I tried, either on or off, 2x, 4x, 8x, etc. Also tried the per-app profile, it didn't help either.

makes no difference for me either (and I have screen flashing due to dual GPU card - ATI 5970)

Same here. Even 32x did no difference on my gtx580. Kind of helps to confirm that high end cards are unaffected. What about finding that old 1.0 version and work from there?

Hi all,

First off thank you for your patience. I know how frustrating it is to buy a game and not be able to play it!

Rest assured we are still working on the problem.

It was noted that some of you are running Fraps and/or Xfire. Can you shut these down and try the game? Also disable Aero. Any difference?

Lastly, if you can send me a private message with your email I will contact you directly.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for keeping us updated on this. Quitting Fraps has no effect on frame rate. FYI, in 'game' i get about 15 fps - this goes up to 60 when in menu mode.

I've sent a PM per your request. If you need anything else let me know.
Thanks.

For reference: Turning off Aero has no effect for me. One of the first things I tried. It seems like something is "overflowing" on high end systems, truncating the overall performance. In other words it seems to be less of an issue of under-performance than the opposite. In that case it doesnt help to shut off stuff but to add things to the renderer (like the fsaa "fix").

I've tried the above mentioned fixes.. but with no luck. I'm still getting 20 fps, even when allowing the gpu to buffer 8 frames ahead.

I've shut down all reasonable background applications.. still no luck.

Hello Meridian4????
Two weeks since I last posted asking for an update and you don’t have the decency to reply?

Chris_Ihao
10-12-2011, 04:44 PM
Ok, I've had enough. You cant sell a product in 2011 which only works on 2001 hardware (the aa fix is ridiculous as it depends on slowing down the graphics to get smoothness). First refund ticket hereby issued, and I've got 268 titles on steam. Its the principle that counts btw, not the money.

Hah! It looks like there was an update, of sorts. Look at the System Requirements on the Store page. It now says "Does not support NVIDIA GTX 580, GTX 260 and GTS 250 Graphics cards."

spage0987
10-14-2011, 05:14 PM
Wow....how lame is that.....iv already put in a refund ticket

colorado
10-19-2011, 04:41 PM
The spec requirements are kind of vague. It just says it doesn't support "GTX 580, GTX 260 and GTS 250 Graphics cards." That's pretty specific--to the point that it seems the person who entered the change knows nothing about Graphic card technology. Does that mean it doesn't support those specific cards, but it will support 400 series cards? Or a 560? Or a 285? Or modern ATI cards? The edited requirements don't make much sense.

But Valve really should refund everyone who bought the game given that they now acknowledge it doesn't work on modern hardware. In fact, they should just pull the game from the store entirely given that MEridian4 really didn't do much to update the game to work on modern hardware and don't seem willing to either (Which is kind of par for the course with them, actually). Either that or put the warning that it doesn't work on modern hardware in much larger lettering on its store page.

I actually almost just bought this (a Robin Hood take on Commandos sounds awesome). Glad I checked the forums first.

I will not be purchasing another product from this publisher, they really need to take a good look at how they treat customers, it would only take a min to give some feedback on their progress good or bad!

Not sure if the game has been fixed or not. Lets assume not. (i dont know whether the game files are synced or not)

There were posted instructions on GoG forums some time ago how to make the game work smoothly. Fonts are the problem in the english version. To fix that means just to simply replace DATA\Interface\Fonts folder with the same folder from e.g. german version of the game. I did not try this with the steam german (or another non-english) version, because there was also the necessary Fonts folder included in the post (and I have not known about these steam language mutations until now and still, i think it only replaces the language files).

And it works. Played it whole weekend.

JeffM4, No issues for me. Steam and Amazon installs were perfect and game plays as I expect under both versions.

My Machine specs: Win 7, Asus, all-in-one, I5 quad, Radeon HD6470.

As most ppl i instaled steam version to find out how unplayable Robin Hood is after 5 seconds. Menus are fast as they should but the game is just bad stutter/lag. What is your idea meridian4? I want to like you but this is making fun of us, you also dont reply for (what almost a year now?)
Either tell customers how to make it work in the description, update it. Or stop selling it!

edit: going to try GoG.com fix. If it works I'll make sure to buy at GoG.com next time!

Got better but still slow when there are many elements... broken game.

hi!

game is unplayable for me too. I use Win8Pro x64 and get roughly 5-10 fps ... resulting in heavy input lag ... i've also tried most of the solutions people were posting on this boards without having any success.

so here's part of my dxdiag:
