View Full Version : Definition of "activation" according to TAGES

I was wondering about this, so I looked it up.

http://www.tagesprotection.com/main.htm

TAGES™ protects software products for online distribution. Typically, the online activation process of a protected software product is performed on the first execution, with our activation software, TagesClient.

The only information that will be transferred from the client's PC to the activation server is the necessary activation request code calculated from a hash value of the client PC configuration. The information that will be sent is completely anonymous, no data from a client PC other than the hash value will be sent.

In other words, 'activation' is an event triggered the first time you run the game after installing it, rather than every time you run it. This shouldn't be a problem unless you are in the habit of constantly uninstalling and reinstalling games.

The page above also has information on how to remove TAGES (or T@AGES, as the site occasionally calls it), just in case you need to purge this evil foreign homunculus from your system.

As an aside, it seems as if their website was built in 1998 by the work experience kid who re-skinned it from the fansite he built for his favourite grunge band. It's also got some wonderful statements on it:

Statement: 'A tool that is able to make a 1/1 copy of a TAGES™ protected CD exists.'

Answer: This is an urban legend.

Their emphasis, not mine.

You know what I think? The best way to stop people pirating your games is to

1) Make it worth buying.
2) Put it on Steam.
3) Sell it at a reasonable price.

£5 will do nicely.

Tages doesn't work with windows 7 and tages is technically a rootkit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rootkit)... I own this game and can't play it on w7 without a tages bypass....

Game works fine on Windows 7. I've never had an issue running in in the couple years I've owned it.

i don't understand this

"After 30 days you will get that activation back up to 3 total activations."

does it mean like after 30 days after the third activation, TAGES will reset the number of activations, and we can activate it for another 3 times again? please clarify

I was wondering the same thing. Is this unlimited activations like Steam, or am I limited to installing it three times at which point the space-time continuum cracks and I dissolve into meta-human plasma?

Well, read my first post. Every time you install it counts as an activation. You start off with three activations. If you install it once, you'll get two. 30 days after that initial activation, you'll go back to three. You could also decide to install it on another computer.

So, if you keep installing and uninstalling the game in a very short period of time, you'll have to wait to install it again. If, like most people, you just install the software on your main PC and actually enjoy the game, then you have absolutely ♥♥♥♥-all to worry about.

However, if you're constantly and compulsively uninstalling and reinstalling things, you probably have bigger problems that TAGES.

yes. Unless you wait 30 days and get one activation back and another 30 days for the second one...

No, it doesn't. You should be fine.

You can install it and uninstall more than three times. It's just that if you're installing and uninstalling more than three times a month you'll run into problems.

So the question you have to ask yourself is: "Am I going to download and install a 10GB game, install it, then uninstall it, then redownload it three times in a month"

If the answer is 'no', then you won't have a problem.

Say you install it once, then uninstall it three months later, then download it again next year. Well, that's also fine. You'll still have three downloads again at that point. If you carry on like that for the rest of your natural life you'll still be able to install it.

So, you only need to worry if you're some kind of psychopath who has a burning desire to download 10GB games and frantically install them and uninstall them. If that's the case, then a) you need help and b) you'll have to use Mass Effect 2 or Borderlands until the thirty day limit expires.

yes. Unless you wait 30 days and get one activation back and another 30 days for the second one...

No, that's wrong. You can use up your first three activations in an afternoon if you like. Then you have to wait 30 days.
