Seriously. This is my third try on Hard. Is there a technique or trick to it that I'm not utilizing? What I'm doing is just plainly shooting at him with the basic "1" weapons (shotgun and g.launcher doesn't have enough reach). I try my best to aim for his head, only because it's the brightest and shiniest part of him. When he starts firing the electric balls, I hide behind a pillar (just enough so I can carry on spraying at him). When the missiles fire, I try my best to avoid them. If I'm unable, I just let some of them hit the top of the light-post and the rest detonate near me, giving me a bit of damage. I keep this up for more than 15 minutes and yet he's still strutting around like he owns the goddarn' place. Is there an indicator as to when he's actually taking significant damage?
EDIT: ATM, I'm loading a previous save and investing in more powerful long-ranged weaponry and giving it another go. Boy is this frustrating. Nonetheless, excellent game so far, $26 well spent.

Yeah. You may have noticed his glowy armbands. When something's glowy and green or yellow, that's a visual hint that it has weakpoints. Shoot the armbands (I find the railgun best for this, but RPG works too). Then he'll drop a few Heli-Cutters. Take them out, then shoot all the other bits that glow like the armbands did. Then he'll go super-saiyyan, and you can shoot him however, afaik, it'll kill him.
It's really tough, but it is do-able, even on Insane.

Thanks, had a thought on going for those but never did think it'll do much good. Time to get back to it!

When he turns red and starts throwing pwnballs, hide behind a pillar and pop out to shoot him between pwnballs.

Yeah, even behind a pillar, those pwnballs hurt, so be wary!

Not always... I found there's a narrow corridor where they really won't hurt you at all, but it really is VERY narrow and trial/error is really the only way to find it.

You can coax Atlas into firing at the pillar, which leaves you safe as long as you back up from the pillar a bit.

FFS!!!! Atlas on Insane!!!!!! GAAHHHH
So I get him to the point where he turns red and hovers but his red plasma shots kill me every time. I try to hide, the splash damage gets me, I try to dodge, splash damage gets me, I cry, I get one-shotted. AHHHHHHHH
Got that bastard!

Nothing can be as bad as the last Boss fight in Dark Sector. I haven't gotten this far yet, but soon will. :D

I came across a bug fighting Atlas when I was mucking around on normal. My "red" weapons wouldn't fire at all when I hit LMB but when I fired my "blue" weapon ( in particular the rail gun ) it fired the entire ammo supply at once - rapid fire. You can image how quick and easy Atlas was to kill like this.
Bug didn't happen on Insane....damn!

ok i need a new tactic with Atlas. im ignoring the adds, and running around the outside of the pillars, using the smartgun to target Atlas' weakpoints. he constantly keeps spawning new walking helicopter things, and the longer you take to get all of his weakspots destroyed, the harder it is to stay alive.
anyone else got a good strat? this is on insane btw

Call me crazy but I ignored the little critters all together against Atlas on Insane. Basically I ran round the outer edges of the arena constantly. If you do this the small machines won't actually catch up to you but instead gather up and follow each other like sheep ( remember to sprint too ). Used the Railgun against Atlas the whole time only, picking up health only when I was at 40-50HP. If you must a few Shotguns blasts or mortar fire to clear some of the small machines up but you can just let them follow you the whole time and focus on Atlas. Also once you kill Atlas, you win the level no matter how many of the small machines are still left chasing you. Good luck!

thats the exact strat ive been doing, been able to get to the last phase, but i still got those little pricks following me,then i get insta gibbed from the pwnballs. this is a tough fight, but afterwards,i'd feel like i actually achieved something. wish i got the railgun,so i gotta do this fight without it, the smartgun though works fairly well

Smartgun is fairly weak. Based on those enemies that shoot at you (whatever they are) the smart gun kills them in 3 shots, where the Railgun kills them in 2. The lock-on shot of the Smartgun is pretty powerful, at least near a rocket launcher shot (do you have that?), but is painfully slow. I can't remember the tech tree top of my head but maybe load your save from the start of the level again and put your points towards an upgraded railgun maybe?
Hey developers, those weak spots on the boss, why don't they change gradually change colour, maybe 3-5 stages, so i know I'm actually doing damage. They almost instantly go from orange to red. More damage feedback would be appreciated.

I'm playing on Insane and I have trouble dodging his Plasma projectiles whenever I move between cover. I have neither the RPG nor the Railgun in my arsenal. I have the Grenade Launcher and Mine Launcher maxed.
What should I do?

That's a tough situation to be in. Your grenade and mine launcher is great for the small machines but Atlas, um, in less you *have* other guns, the basic plasma gun and machine gun is all you have. I don't know if mines stick to Atlas's body. Bad design if you can upgrade your guns the way you want and be in a severe pickle on the boss.

Mines will explode on impact and they are pretty powerful. Just watch his kick when you get close.

I can't wait to run though the game again, at least on hard, choosing crazy upgrade combinations such as only combat add-ons and seeing if I kill Atlas. Shame that once you max out of those orange canister go to waste (except for score points?)

Well, the problem isn't the mine launcher, but avoiding Atlas's plasma shots while trying to shoot. If there is something that I dislike about this game, it's that every damn projectile seems to have a huge AOE. If I try to get close to Atlas, it shoots me point-blank with its plasma superblasts (when it shoots with both hands).

It took me a while but once I found the best combination is really easy and you can kill him in less than 5 min.
Here is the trick. Use the smartgun alt-fire (lock-on) to take out the two spot in its wrist. After this point he will start throwing out the helicopters which you will deal with the shotgun for crowd control, nothing else works best. Try not to kill all of them (because he will go into god-like mode and spawn more of them) and keep running around the map (you will take damage but not so bad as a first thought.
Change to CNR railgun and shoot the rest of its shields with it (generally 2 shoots are enough). Once you got him and he becomes red change to rocket launcher. About 5-10 missiles will bring him down in no time. To dodge his attacks go out of cover at one side of the pillar and as soon as he shoots sprint to the opposite side as far as you can, shoot, go back to cover, rinse and repeat.

Finally beat the guy. Took me a while and lot of patience, but it ultimatly paid off!
Here's how I did it: every time Atlas started to shoot me with his Plasma blasts, I took cover behind a pillar, but in a way that allows me to shoot at one of his braces without getting hurt by its projectiles. I usually allowed myself to get hit by the missiles by "hugging" the pillars; took some damage in the process, but it's a lesser evil compared to the Plasma shots.
The second part is actually easier: I used one of my two direct-hit weapons (Rifle or Plasma Gun) and pummelled Atlas's weak spots as much as I could. When it started deploying chopper bots, I switched to my Grenade Launcher, and begun running away, occasionnally leaving a magnetic grenade behind me to slow my pursuers down. I realized it was pointless to fight them, as Atlas tends to rip them apart with its "breath" attack. I usually attempted to keep my distance from Atlas in order to minimize damage from its "breath" attack.
The third part is the easiest: just took cover behind a pillar and tried my best to avoid its plasma blasts by doing a dodging jump or by trying to make it so the blast hit the pillar. At the same time, I was shooting it non-stop; I was so pumped I started yelling, Rambo-style.
Man, that felt good to see this giant POS finally bite the dust. It was long and hard; precisely the kind of epic boss fight I was expecting from a game like Hard Reset. :D
The only thing that kinda ruined my experience was when a bug caused Atlas to stop moving completely. It happened just as I destroyed its torso part last. I had to reload, it was SO frustrating, and also pretty odd, as this game has been pretty much bug-free so far.

It happened to me but he recovered after a few blowing one of the weak spots. Instead I had a very annoying bug that kept me dying over and over because one of the epots, the one at the right ankle, wad not showing up so I would keep shooting and running around like 20 min pointless. Finally, I realized of the weak spot thanks to the smart gun.

Well, my problem is that it didn't have any visible weak spot at that point. I guess the bug happened before Atlas could switch to its third phase (with the jackstrap-shaped weak spot).
I tried shooting at him, but it didn't budge. Maybe I should have tried harder?

If you have the charge beam on the default plasma gun, it does a lot of damage, even if you don't charge it fully. I took out atlas' glowing codpiece in about 3-4 shots with it. The only stage I had problems hitting him with the charge beam was the very first one, because he moves his arms around a lot. The charge beam is also pretty good for the bots as even the smallest charge possible with it will knock them around.
The final phase is actually quite easy once you learn how to dodge his red energy balls - He tries to predict where you are going to go. By sticking near a pillar ontop of changing your direction before he fires, he'll either hit the pillar, overshoot you and do only a scrape of damage, or completely miss.
I've finished him on Insane.
Interesting observation: He also has a visible health 'meter' during his final phase - The glowing things ontop of the pillars shooting light into the sky break when you do damage to Atlas, when the final one breaks, well, so does him.

This is the problem I'm having. After I strip away all of his armor, the jockstrap/codpiece doesn't highlight and he seems to be immune to damage. It happens while he's still moving, but I got that same glitch where he also stops moving. So in either case, I'm screwed. It's a bug that I can't get past. I've reloaded and restarted the entire level 5 times with the exact same result. Anyone have this problem that found a work around?
I've tried closing and relaunching the application, I've tried changing the difficulty level. I've tried everything I can think of. So at this point I'm stuck and I can't make any further progress. Ugh, so freaking annoying. I'm thinking of trying to get my money back.

Yeah boy took him down on hard ;)
It's pretty easy once you figure out the pattern.
1. Hide behind pillar, just in the little triangle of pavement before the steps, and take out his wrist bands with smart gun. 2 x alt fire per wrist band.
2. Blow off the body parts piece by piece with the rail gun as you circle/sprint around the courtyard. Totally ignore the chopper guys. Pick up health and ammo only when you're getting low eg under 50 health.
3. Stand behind a pillar a little back and strafe left/right, you should be able to get it so his shots hit the pillar in front of you. While you're ducking and weaving snipe at him with smart gun alt fire or whatever.

ok I'm on my 2nd go right now. on hard. first go was on normal. I can't defeat him. yet. died about 20 times so far. I really don't know what to do. I can easily finish first and second phases but the red phase, the third one, it seems impossible. I'm going mechanic atm so I have no electrical upgrades. I do have the RPG but it seems useless. I don't know guys. this is suppose to be hard not impossible or nearly impossible. I am standing behind pillars while he fires the red plasma ball and use guided rockets towards the boss but I fired at least 10 and he's still standing. what am I doing wrong?

Leave some medipacks lying down on the arena - I always try to avoid picking them up too early - do it when you re at least at 20-30 hp. Also nuke him all you can and keep moving, shoot him after he launches his plasma attack. You can also try and find a blindspot behind one of the lamps ;) [Also - his HP is displayed as the lamps in the red phase - so you can check how much is left by the number of lamps still giving light.]
