Hopefully the move to XDR2 memory is a smart move. So far I like what I see, could potentially be a great series of cards like the 5000 series.

Ye those numbers look pretty good, but the main thing that i saw is the power power consumption which is pretty low imo.

will 7970 works on my Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3P-B3 Motherboard?
I mean the PCIe I am using is gonna fit the 7970?
I got:
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16)
* For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16 slot.
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4)
* The PCIe x1 slots share bandwidth with the PCIEX4 slot. When one of the PCIe x1 slots is populated, the PCIEX4 slot will operate at up to x1 mode.
3 x PCI Express x1 slots
(All PCI Express slots conform to PCI Express 2.0 standard.)
2 x PCI slots

I am not sure, because the article says that is going to use a different PCIe method or something like that. I am confused about that too.

That sucks, I want a new mobo for bulldozer but now need to wait for a mobo that gets the most out of these cards!?!?

Hopefully the size will also be a bit more compact.
I'm happy with my case, and it just fits my 6950 with .5" to spare.

I think it's better to wait till the XDR2 rams are out too.

first thing I noticed too. Only 150W for the 7950? Niiice.

PCI-E 3.0 is backwards compatible. It remains to be seen if youll lose any performance, using 2.0, but thats unlikely.

Yea, it's doubtful the video cards will completely saturate the bandwidth for PCI-E 3.0. If it does.. the lose in performance will probably be minimal. It's no different than before when cards upgraded to 2.0.. there really wasn't that big of a performance difference.

As long as the 69xxs drop in price when these hit, I'm happy as a clam.

usually youll be better served by buying the new product that your budget allows rather than older ones.

I think I will just go with a 7870 instead of a 7950. Should be able to play Battlefield 3 on the 7870.

Q4 this year for the midrange stuff, Q1 next year for the highend.

It should work, just run the card using the X16 bandwith slot and not the X4.

It just simply saying, if you are running 1 graphics card only, put it in the X16 slot. The X4 slot will turn into X1 speeds if the physical X1 slot is used (sound card, etc).

I didn't see anything about new PCI-E method, just the higher end cards will be using some extremely new VRAM. XDR2.

The Radeon HD 6990 already has a bandwidth of 320GB/s and it runs fine in PCI-E X16 2.0 slots, and according to the article, the HD 7970 has a bandwith of 256GB/s. I don't see any problems on how the card can be bottle-necked (or bottle-necked too much) when used in a PCI-E 2.0 board.

I'm still rocking my ASUS 5850 and love it!

The 7000 series does indeed look tasty. I plan on buying a mid-range AMD 7 series or an Nvidia 6 series GPU this winter for Battlefield 3. Now I just hope my Core i5 750 can hang in there for another year or two...

I'd like to see the benchmark on these in crossfire mode.

NVIDIA 6 actually refers to the old series back in the Far Cry, Doom 3, and Half-Life 2 days. Wikipedia calls the new series x00. I hope that NVIDIA will introduce DisplayPort to all of their high-end cards.

IMO your lil I5 will be fine even the older Gen Intel Quads are still very capable, and would run a HD7xxx series card's IMO at least till we get some more demanding game's.. At this stage though I have not come across a game that really utilises my QX9650

I was thinking about waiting for the GTX6xx series but at this stage my 2x HD4890's are showing there age esp with a shiny new I7 2600K al though I can still max all my games out at 1920x1200 haven't tried this monitor on the QX9650 but I'm sure it would still handle them very well..

FWIW I plan on getting 2 HD7970's, shouldn't need a GPU upgrade for at least 3-4 years I hope
