I`m still running XP as is my co-op compatriot, so I regret that I will pursue a refund for the pre-order of this great-looking game. Would`ve been alot of fun; I would certainly prefer to play that game.

I could have sworn I saw no 'non-XP' style info at the time I purchased it. Nonetheless, such is life.

As a side note, I am compelled to say I still see no reason for having to go a route other than DX9 and XP... Gatling Gears is a great arcade shooter similar in scope to Renegade Ops, yet its superlative without DX 10 or 11, or 64 bit, or etc. .

The reason is that at some point, you have to drop ages-old technology to have the possibility to make graphical engines with better effects and better ways to handle things. (It is most likely using the same engine as Just Cause 2, which was quite gorgeous.)

Windows 7 64 bits is the most used OS according to Steam statistics (http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey). As such, it makes sense to assume that most users will have it installed.

well although im sure u r aware this game is directx10 only and windows xp doesnt support directx10, u need vista or windows 7 for directx10 or 11 games, i guess if u wanna stick to xp ur gonna miss out on a number of good games, can i ask what graphics card u use for ur pc though?

That and DX10 is popular in the Steam survey too.
Same with Intel CPUs.

I actually ran into the same problem as you. When I purchased I did not notice the minimum requirements stated XP would not work; I don't know if this was added for clarity or if I had simply not paid attention and missed it. Either way, I too have a copy of the game I cannot play or gift away :(

I utilize an EVGA NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 460 with 1 Gig of video ram (GDDR5). I also run an Intel 9650 Quad core cpu with that, since someone else spoke of curiousity rearding the `ole brain power in the system.

Well, I guess what I`m saying is that I see a multitude of DX9 games these days that look AWESOME... I look at games like Call Of Juarez The Cartel, Gatling Gears, Dungeons, Skyrim, Hard Reset, Red Orchestra 2, Shogun 2, Dead Island, E.Y.E., Magicka, Sanctum, Two Worlds II, and the entire Warhammer 40,000 series and I am quite content with their superlative level of graphical achievement. I find myself wondering how much better one *need* get than in those circumstances. And apologies for the list (!)... it tends to be a simple way to try to illustrate a point, yet in this case it *is* my easiest way to offer up examples that I might contend support my perspective.

To offer a specific example, Gatling Gears is a recent excellent arcade shooter - cooperative - that looks amazingly similar to gameplay video of Renegade Ops. I imagine that Renegade Ops could have been done in DX9, with Gatling Gears` engine even (!), with little to no degradation in visual quality or profound distinction to a DX10/11 version.

I`m awaiting a reply from Valve tech support regarding a refund; I`ll post anything useful as it happens.

I know: AAAARRRGH! Renegade Ops looks great!

If you don't read the system requirements BEFORE buying, you ain't getting a refund. I tried with SW Battlefront 2, their reply was pretty much "read the requirements".

OMG

Moan moan moan moan.

The developer decided not to support a 10 year old operating system, no ****.

Why even start a thread on this besides trolling?

The "XP not supported" clause in the system requirements has been there since day one. Avalanche was sure to add it as there was a bit of anger over JC2 as it was not mentioned immediately upon pre-order availability.

And I agree with the above poster who said "lets all stick to 10 year old OS's and complain when companies don't support them

I hear there is also not going to be a playstation 2 release"

If you're a pc gamer and still on XP, guess what, it's time to upgrade! Buy yourself a copy of Win 7 OEM for a hundred bux and leave 2001 behind. I applaud Avalanche for building their games in DX10 and I hope more devs start doing the same. XP/DX9 has held back pc games for far too long.

There's nothing wrong with XP, in point of fact M$ had planned to pull all support for it but cancelled that when there's was such a huge outcry. While among steam Win7 may be the most used, it's worth noting that it still only just ahead of Win XP. Little bit of data for you:

2011 Win7 Vista Win2003 WinXP Linux Mac Mobile
August 40.4% 5.9% 0.8% 38.0% 5.2% 8.2% 0.9%

Although it is also worth noting that Win7 is fast heading that way. In January Win XP was the most used with a 45% versus Win7 31%

Personally, i use Win XP and will probably keep using XP for a while yet simply because i don't like Win7. I'll probably wait until Win 8 is released and try that one out. Means i miss a few games, but so far the games i have been interested in that required Vista or 7 to run have all been crap in the end. Renegade Ops is the only game that i've actually wanted to play

You are bottlenecking that system with XP. Honestly. I have been running 7 Ultimate 64 since its release on a similar system (Q6600 @ 3GHz, HD5870 1GB) and its just awesome.

Your equipment will be better utilized by 7 than XP. I can give you a great example.

I had to build my wife a new machine recently, she was using an older one of mine that was 8 years old and had XP. She still wanted XP. With a Athlon II X2, 4GB of RAM and a HD4870 it didn't feel any faster than her old machine. Well she recently let me install 7 64bit and man it feels much better now. XP hits a performance wall at about 1GB RAM, was not designed to properly take advantage of multiple cores and just overall is too old. 7 was designed with current hardware in mind so the more RAM, the merrier and the more cores the happier it is.

My advice, as a PC tech and system builder/enthusiast, is to get 7 64Bit Home Premium (most people don't need any of the Pro+ extras) and install it. Hell do a dual boot if you want to keep XP. But I am 100% sure that you will love 7. My wife does.

8 is going to be the same as 7, only a few new features. But overall it will be the same. If you don't like 7 then you wont like 8 that much either.

Its funny though. No one really liked XP until about SP2. I remember people saying they would stay on 98/2000 forever. Same people now say they will stay on XP forever.

XP when it first released was as unstable as Vista always was, it wasn't until SP2 that it finally stabilised. Stability is a big thing for a lot of people, and after Vista i think it's only normal for people to be slow to change.

For me i prefered XP because i could strip it down, i got the installation down to something like 400mb. 7 is just bloated full of crap i'll never use and can't strip out. Not to mention it's to restrictive on what you can do. I love listening to my mate raging at the computer because it wont let him do something it considers is dangerous. Ultimatly i know i will upgrade to either 7/8, looks aside more and more stuff are vista only these days, so sooner or later we will have to upgrade. Which is a shame really, since when i do games i've been playing for years will have problems running on 7/8.

Vista was not that bad. I ran it for two years and had no issues. Better than 7? Nope.

As for your mates "issues" with 7, it never stops you. It just warns you. And you can turn it off under the User Account Control.

But you still missed my biggest point on XP. XP is so old that it is pointless on newer hardware. Its like getting a car that can go 200MPH+ but you can't use it where you live because the top speed limit is 65MPH.

As for the old games, its not that hard to get them to work. DOS games, use DOSBOX. Hell I had Duke Nukem 3D running on Vista and C&C 95 edition. Only problem with C&C 95 edition was it moved wayyyy too fast because there was no frame limiter built into it and my hardware was wayyyy too powerful.

The people who stick with XP are and complain about DX10 are no different then Mac users who complain when a new game doesn't work.

Windows 7/Vista has a combined install share of 73% vs 18% for XP.

If you want to play modern games, then its time to upgrade your OS to something that was made in the last decade.

October 25 2011 marks XP's 10 year anniversary. You have been able to get get W7 licenses for as cheap as $40 since launch.

Anyone who thinks W7 is anything but rock solid even on older hardware is clearly disillusion. XP is a big piece of garbage in comparison and I ran with XP from its launch (IMO worse then Vista's launch by far) until Win 7 RC1 was available.
