If the game needs steamworks to work then what's the point of retail selling 2 days before we can play? Australia is my location.

Im in Aus aswell but my steam now says unlock on the 7thThat means 8th as we are ahead of the us in time zones. Still if it is only 1 day difference then that isn't so bad.

Look at the "unlocks in" countdown. That one is always right, whatever your time zone :)

I decided not to get retail, I just pre-ordered Digital version for half of the price that steam charges.

The Steam CD key for retail vs digital has a special unique ID in it. Thus Steam will know you purchased retail or digital and will unlock it only for people with a retail key early.
I think they do this to keep local retailers happy.
