To the people who have installed already, did you completely remove all previous drivers, uninstalling them, and then installing these new updated Rage performance drivers? Or did you just download and install the new Rage performance driver without uninstalling any previous drivers you had?

10-04-2011, 03:38 PM
I forget who figured it out but you need to create 2 folders manually to fix the screen tearing and artfiacting, you want to go to user-app data- local- then create the folder "id software" then in id software folder make the folder "rage" I dont know what the details were but the game needs this folder for a data cache or something, this should fix the screen tearing and whatnot, at least it did for me.

C.bledsoejr
10-04-2011, 03:39 PM
Is the artifacting gone?

I'm not noticing any artifacting. I actually noticed the flickering was still there. Then I made sure triple buffering was off and I forced V SYNC ON in catalyst and it runs GREAT now. The only issue is the textures are still a bit slow to load, but I can imagine that will have to be a game patch within the next day but now it's starting to look like the game I was meant to play :)

New drivers definitely help. The loading of textures as you move your mouse quickly is still there, but not as noticeable since the loading is faster. Overall visual quality appears better, not sure why. Screen flickering is reduced. There's still some thrashing on the screen, but if I can figure out how to turn off V-Sync, I have a feeling that might get rid of the thrashing.

Okay... my only remaining problem is texture popup.

Now, I wouldn't care if this was only a visual thing... but every time the game has to load in new textures, my performance dips a lot. So when I turn fast or enter a new area, it gets jumpy. This is enough to really annoy me and take away from my enjoyment. I really need a smooth experience.

Otherwise... I've actually been able to play the game. Safe to say, it's fun!

This is *speculation* but if I was on Vista, I would extract the ATIOGLXX.DLL from the driver package without installing that package. Put that file into your RAGE directory.

That should make RAGE load the OpenGL runtime that was just published, without messing with the rest of your stuff.

I DO NOT KNOW IF THAT WORKS. I am suggesting to try it. If it fails, all you need to do is delete that one file.

You can use 7-zip to unpack the driver package. Then find ATIOGLXX.DL_ and unpack that file as well, it'll unpack ATIOGLXX.DLL. That is the file you put into your RAGE directory.

Well I only played for about 5 minutes with these new drivers (ATI 5850), so tentatively I'll say it works.

Texture artifacts seem gone.
Flickering seem gone.
Frame rate, much improved. Now hovers in the upper 40's-60 when moving around instead of dropping to 25-35.

i7 920 @ 4ghz, in case anyone was wondering if intel or amd processor. Also win 7 64-bit.

I was having MAJOR issues before this patch. This seems to have fixed it all, except the higher res textures coming in when turning....although it appears less noticeable.

Do I wish it would be completely gone, sure. But all the really annoying, game breaking things for me are fixed. The texture streaming thing was different from the flicker and artifacts...and far less of a problem.

Also I have v-sync enabled, triple buffering enabled, and 'enable surface optimization' disabled.

Maybe I'll try and change those things, but maybe not. Also I have in game AA off, and all the other ccc settings set to application controlled.

Mipmap at quality, and AA setting (the final thing in ccc) on adaptive multisampe AA or the middle setting.

Now lets hope they release more fixes for everyone else. But it seems now that it should be fixable for most people, at least with dx11 cards. Hopefully they can add previous cards too. Good luck everyone.

Still shame on them for releasing a broken game and stick saving it with a driver update, that still only helps SOME people, and thus only stick saves it for a portion of the people with problems.

What patch? The texture-popup is a direct result of a core function of the game engine. I really doubt they can easily "patch it away."

Something tells me it's always going to be there on PC until they do a serious retweaking of that bit on PC. I could be wrong. I think its absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to do that on PC. The game barely utilizes my video card at all.

After cleaning out the old drivers and installing the new one, I can't seem to open the Catalyst control panel. Any ideas? Should I just reinstall?

what i did was...

I uninstalled the control panel from the new driver ... restarted my computer after running ccleaner ...

Then I downloaded the regular 11.9 control panel ..you could do that both ways ..just download the whole package or find just the control panel ... either way it should find that your missing your control panel and it should install it ..

I would do a custom install though to make sure its ONLY installing the control panel..

Now it works fine ... the new driver is still 11.9 so the regular control panel should work fine ... its working fine on my end..

I generally only update when I need to, or there's a problem, and then if needed delete the exe file for previous driver installs. I know how to install drivers properly...Ati drivers are just ♥♥♥♥. I had the same exact problem with Brink. Sorry but I'm never going ati again. Ati had HOW many months to make sure their cards worked on openGL after the big issues with Brink and we still get this?

I did EXACTLY what I wrote there and mine hauls ♥♥♥ ....without problems ...you have to be doing something wrong..

just to offer up a contrast to anyone who's problems were fixed by installing this driver. i run an xfire series 5xxx and after installing this driver, i cant even make it to the Bethesda logo before the game crashes.

someone needs to fix this, and fix it quick. i own a gaming specific pc and this is the only game that hasnt worked on it, and i've purchased and successfully played most of the problematic games released this year. i refuse to believe this problem is specific to my rig.

it also doesnt add to the situation when you request a refund from Steam support and they blatantly ignore your question by replying with technical assistance and "please let us know if there is anything else we can do to help"..

well, you can help by refunding my money..how about that?..before i take me a picket sign with your name on it to Occupy Wall Street..

ROFL .. I will NEVER return to Nvidia ..

Step 1: make sure you have the new rage driver downloaded

Step 2: go to device manager ...find display adapters...expand it.. right click on the graphics card listed and click UNINSTALL and use the check mark next to it to delete the drivers for the device

Step 3: run driver sweeper http://www.majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html click the check mark for AMD-Display and click analyse ...make sure it selected only AMD display driver stuff ...then clean it..

Step 4: restart computer

Step 5: run ccleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Step 6: install the new driver

Step 7: restart computer

Step 8: this step is ONLY if your control panel doesn't work .. you will have to uninstall the control panel ONLY and download the 11.9 control panel from here: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx#2 <--64bit version or http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-32.aspx#2 <---32bit version ..then obviously install it..

Just uninstall old driver through Control Panel, reboot, install Rage driver, reboot, play game. Only change I had to make was enable vsync through CCC. That got rid of the texture tearing, and I never had the popping to start with. It looks great and runs smooth.

Running it at 1920x1080 on:
i7-920
Asus P6X58D Premium
6GB G.Skill @1333
Asus 5850
All at stock speeds

I added this to the launch options:

+ image_anisotropy 16 + image_usecompression 0 +fc_maxcachememoryMB 2048

and now it runs great ...

I also made a folder in \Users\username\AppData\Local ...well 2 folders ..the first one "id software" and inside id software I made a "rage" folder ..now the game dumps 2 files there called

FileCache000.bin <--1gig file
FileCacheHeader.bin <--128kb file

now the popping in problem is pretty much gone .. it only shows up on the edges on the screen occasionally..

I uninstalled old then installed this one...I always like to start fresh.

Seems to be working so far, but I had to force vsync as the tearing was nuts. Also, i get "RAGE has stopped working" when entering the wasted garage. so yeah, im stuck it appears.

naw man! dont give up, disable catalyst AI, for VSYNC to ALWAYS ON, and enable triple buffering under open gl at the very bottom, this all in the catalyst control center. I was getting stuck at the garage too, i also tried taking steam overlay in properties, that worked too, once ur in, save and u can go back to steam overlay! lemme know!

What sucks is, someone told me to do this same thing, and I still have problems when it comes to pop ins. If I move slowly, it's fine, but if I go a bit faster I really do run into pop in problems. I even turned on my triple buffering for OpenGL and so on.

what i did was...

I tried doing this and am still not getting the Catalyst control panel to show up. Right click on the desktop, select Catalyst control panel, nothing. Select it from the start menu, nothing.

EDIT: I know this sounds ridiculous, but how exactly do I go about adding those lines you mentioned above to the launch options? I just want to make sure it's set up correctly.

I cannot install these. I've tried everything from using driver sweeper to windows system restore and every time the driver fails to install. It just will not install not matter what I do, everything else in the package installs but the driver comes up as "Failed".

Any suggestions? 5850 btw.

For best results, use Driver Sweeper (or similar) to clean out your old drivers and install fresh. Always works best.

Well I can get into the game now. Totall console port. Love the menus! lol...

Also all the texture loading issues, are still there. The game looks like crap. Runs nice, but it truly does look like something made before Half Life. That's Half Life the original....

I don't know why your control panel wont come up.... but maybe a full uninstall of the drivers like I mentioned earlier in this thread might work ...install the driver with a custom install without the control panel... then go download the normal control panel from the AMD website...install it..

To add the launch options.. go to your steam library right click on rage ..go to properties in the general tab it should say "set launch options" ...copy and paste this: + image_anisotropy 16 + image_usecompression 0 +fc_maxcachememoryMB 2048

...but start out at 1024 instead of 2048 ..

Sorry guys ... I gave you all the info I know .. I never have a problem like this..

I run a tight system .. been gaming for 20 years and maintain my computer at a certain tweaking standard....that includes the operating system..

If something don't work right I will always try to work around the problems instead of waiting for a driver or the devs to figure out the problem..

I also refrain from complaining or moaning ...since in PC gaming there are always set backs ...games are rarely bug free on release.. its been that way for the 20+ years of gaming..

All I can say is keep trying ...you may eventually find a solution ... the game is pretty much fixed now with this new driver.... and the tweak options I mentioned..

Thanks for the hints. They helped but still jerky for me and using only 35-65% GPU at anytime indoor or outside. 1680x1050 4xAA, HD5870, Xeon W3680. Almost feels like the FEAR 3 launch bug with strafing jerky-ness. That and the constant GPU throttle may play a part thanks to the 60fps lock. Can't get the 60 lock off. I tried the console hack. No luck.

I completely cleaned my second comp which uses an ati card and those "new" drivers are worse than the old ones. Now instead of actually getting 2FPS the game simply CTD soon as the opening cinematic ends and the game actually is supposed to load. On ID forums a bunch of people are having the exact same problem.

Before anyone mentions I did a complete uninstall, reboot, driver cleaner run, reboot, install the "new" rage performance driver. I made sure to delete the old file and the folder it expands to to make sure there was no overwriting of files so everything was fresh. Been building comps for 20+ years so I know what I am doing. My main gaming rig has pretty much 0 issues but its running nvidia.

I don't get any texture popping ...all issues are gone...

Texture popping, flickering, low FPS .. etc..

I also run with my game modified in the launch options...maybe thats helping..

launch options settings: + image_anisotropy 16 + image_usecompression 0 +fc_maxcachememoryMB 2048

I used the steam forums here to tweak my game instead of ♥♥♥♥♥ and moan :D .... runs great

Wow... congrats. Unfortunately, it still exists for most people who play this game because the game UNLOADS ALL TEXTURES YOU DON'T LOOK AT. IT's just how it works. How bad it really is varies from player to player, and for me it's really effing annoying. Whenever it happens, my performance dips... and it happens every time I turn my effing mouse.

I can still play the game and I get fantastic framerates otherwise... but the texture pop-in does hurt my experience quite a bit.

Rage Performance Driver causes freezing on 4650 AGP. Went back to 11.8 as 11.9 just came out and haven't tested it with AGP 4650. Anyone know if it works with AGP?

Also, playing game at 640x480. Not too bad. But hoping an Id patch will make it better. Experiencing same left right reload texture thingy everyone else is getting and slow framerates. Is 11.9 better than 11.8 for Ati?

Will try + image_anisotropy 16 + image_usecompression 0 +fc_maxcachememoryMB 2048 tomorrow.

I installed new driver today. it made the game totally different. it performed way better than yesterday. now, it's rock even though I still see some little tearing. but it's better than make the game slowing down like 5fps. now I enjoy it more than 60fps. actually, without technical issue, this game could be the best fps all time. I hope that ID software will add advanced graphic options for next update. I really hope it. we still need that options.

Its just a guess.... BUT, if you have anything, ANYthing forced in CCC(ATI), or Nvidia Control Panel(not sure bout Nvidia), disable/default/application Select on everything! I have already learned, at least for my rig, forcing AA and AF x16 through CCC was a disaster. and this I normally leave on for all games, unless something like this game comes along and makes me go back to Application Default settings. Just a thought!

Just wondering if anyone else had this problem, but with AF x16 forced before I turned it off, I could see a barely visible matrix of black boxes while running RAGE. Almost like they were 'behind' the graphics but just popping out every so often here and there. It fixed it when I put Anisotrophic on App. Select.

Anyone? Anyone who has installed this:

Did you full wipe drivers and just install this (as per the instructions link on AMD), or just install this over 11.9/11.10?

Just wanna get my ducks in a row for when I get home.

All AMD so-called 'hotfix' are complete standalone replacement driver packs. They don't patch existing drivers, they replace whatever you have installed.

Whether you need to uninstall first "depends" - in truth you shouldn't have to uninstall. It's clear that windows 7 doesn't even need a reboot now to replace graphics drivers.

But, AMD tell you to uninstall because of either their incompetence breaking things or the incompetence they expect their users to have breaking things, rather than because of design.

You'll probably get mixed results. When I had Windows XP, HD4850, driver installs without uninstalling always broke Catalyst control centre.

Since installing windows 7, and moving to HD5850, I've never uninstalled first for at least a couple of years. So that's 24ish driver installs without issues. More recently I just let steam install them (presumably this Friday, when Rage is released here, will be the first time for months that I've installed a driver directly from AMD)

So YMMV, but a lot of this running driver sweeper, whatever that is, and uninstalling is really lore from people having problems years ago.

Truth is, if uninstalling really was key, and driver sweeper did anything useful, AMD should make their driver installation uninstall first and do whatever driver sweeper does. Too obvious a solution perhaps.

with a stiff grammering.

GrammEring? Tut.

Or do the smart thing and get the hell off Vista, which is a horrid OS.

I've been using it for quite a few years. Apart from AMD not releasing Hotfixes for it. I have had zero problems with it.

Sure, initially it was the worst thing ever but after it matured it is great. I have quite a few games that won't run on Windows 7 but works a treat on Vista (Old games mind you).

Mind you, if I could get a copy of Win 7 Pro (with xp mode) without having to drop $500 here I probably would consider upgrading.
