View Full Version : Peculiar Xray engine 1.6 bug crash

Hello this is my first post on the steam forums. My copy of Stalker CoP was working fine until one day the loading screen crashed citing the reason xray engine 1.6 had ceased to function. It told me to send a bug report but I couldn't seem to connect to the server. the error report I got looked like this:

Lengthy I know. I'm not very tech-wise so I have absoluteley no idea what any of it means. I've been searching for ways to fix this but none work. I don't need to update the game or steam and I've tried running it in administrator mode (both). What should I do? I'm losing my mind over this.

For CoP, don't use this command line...

Use this one instead...
"c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\stalker call of pripyat\Stalker-CoP.exe"

Before you do, right click Stalker-CoP.exe, go to Properties, Compatibility tab at top, select Run As Admin and apply.

when I had my game exe and xrayengine run admin mode. I have 2 xray engine shortcuts. One in bin one inside the inside of bin. Is that wrong? Remember I don't know much about this stuff.

Disclaimer: I don't have CoP -- but this is an error that also happens to some using the first game, STALKER SoC.

The game is trying to read and interpret user.ltx ('Executing config-script "user.ltx"...'), but there's a line in that file that is unexpectedly long or contains garbage characters to throw off the parsing, and there isn't enough room in the destination buffer to copy that unusual line ("Dest string less than needed.").

You can delete or rename user.ltx and let the game recreate a valid one.

First find out where that file is. I don't know where it would normally be in CoP, but if you can't find it directly, open up the following file in a text editor like Notepad:

c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\stalker call of pripyat\fsgame.ltx

(Again, this assumes CoP is similar to SoC. I would expect so here.) On the first or second line is something like this:

Whatever it says, go to that drive (here, C:\) and navigate to that subdirectory. You should find user.ltx there.

Now you can delete it or rename it. I suggest renaming it to something like user_bad.txt, then comparing it with the new one created by the game when you restart CoP. It might provide some insight into why this error occurs.

Edit 2: If the line looks something like this:

$app_data_root$ = true| false| $fs_root$| _appdata_\

... then the game might be storing the user file inside the Program Files location where CoP is installed. With Vista/Windows 7/non-admin XP, this might force the file to a "virtual store" location. For info on that, see my reply here, and check out the bottom of that post to see how to change where the game stores your user.ltx file as well as saves and screen snapshots -- after adapting it for CoP, of course.
